Introduction and Statement of Task:

What are you going trying to find out or what two things will you compare?
I am going to study the heights of players in the Melbourne football club for
2016.
The plan is to:
-

Put the data into a grouped frequency table, I will do this because I need
to organise the date into groups.
Find measures of centre including the average and median as I want to
find the centre and then use that for further calculations, find whether or
not the mean or median better represents the data and I want to find the
standard height to represent the whole team.
Find the quartiles because I want to get an idea of the distribution of the
data and in so that I can draw a box and whisker plot.
Find the measures of spread including the range, interquartile range and
standard deviation, I will do this to find the spread of the data and how
much it varies, this will illustrate a possible data skew (or symmetry) and
highlight any outliers.
Graph the data using a boxplot to provide a visual representation of the
data.

Data sampling explanation and Raw Data

There were only 45 members of the football team so I used all the available data
to make my calculations as accurate as possible.
http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/tp-melbourne-demons data was taken from
this site, accessed on 2/8/16, 10.17am.

Mathematical Processes:

Simple mathematical processes:

Here, I have arranged the heights of the Demons player into a grouped
frequency table:
Heights of Melbourne Demons Players
(cm)
170 - <175
175 - <180
180 - <185
185 - <190
190 - <195
195 - <200
200 - <205
205 - <210

The average height of Melbourne demons players is:

= 188.13

Page 4

This result illustrates that the average height among the Melbourne Demons
players is approximately 188cm.

Box and whisker plot:

the graph illustrates that the middle 50% of the data is between 185cm and
193cm.
The
range
heights
varies
173 to

og
from

208cm.
As the standard deviation is 7.22cm, the data suggests that the data is quite
grouped in the middle without a great deal of variation.
IQR = Q3 Q1
IQR 193 185 = 8
1.5 X IQR = 12
Lower boundary = 185 12 = 173cm
Upper boundary = 193 + 12 = 205cm

Therefore there is an outlier present, which alters the box and whisker plot:

Page 5

Reference: http://www.imathas.com/stattools/boxplot.html
The data appears fairly symmetrical but the middle 50% has a slight positive
skew, there is one outlier at 208cm.
According to a government website
(http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/lookup/4338.0main+features21201113), the average male height is 175.6cm, implying that 75% of the footballers in
this team are taller than the general population.

Discussion and Validity:

My data is restricted to a particular Melbourne football club and to Australia in
particular. It may not be valid in the rest of the world or in other sports.
My mathematical process should be valid as the 45 data points were enough to
find the quartiles, standard deviation and average. There was one outlier which
should not have influenced the average substantially. More data would obviously
make a more representative sample and make the conclusion more informative
of the larger population.

Conclusion:
75% of the footballers in the Melbourne demons football team are taller than the
average height of the population. This implies taller people excel in this sport.
