Read Isaiah 63:15-19 through 64:1-8.
What can make Isaiah 63 and 64 very hard to understand, is the fact that the prophet is not following a logical progression of thought, because he is too caught up, too deeply moved by his prayers to be concerned by that. Have you ever prayed like that? Where the world seemingly moves around as you ask God to move in the world? Friends, one of the great things I love about the Bible is the window it gives us into the lives of people God is coming to just like us. In Isaiah 63:15-19 through 64:1-8, we are actually sitting in on the prayer time of the Prophet himself, and as we read it we are joining him in his prayers for Gods presence. What jumped out to me as I read these passages is that Isaiah is taking no rest from persistently praying and in doing so gives God no rest until He rises and His people become the praise of the earth. Isaiah 63:15 (Beginning of Isaiahs prayer) Look down from heaven and see, from your holy and beautiful habitation. Where are your zeal and your might? Prayers for revival begins when we acknowledge Gods absence and how we have drifted from Him. This is why Isaiah begins his intercession to God in Isaiah 63:15 with look down, and then in 64:1 with come down. Isaiah 64:1-2 Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down... I believe that this one of the great prayers of renewal in the Bible that we can ever read, hear or know because it asks God to come to us. Just as God came and walked amongst the pieces of meat in the covenant in Genesis, just as God came in fire on Mount Sinai in the Exodus, just as God came to Elijah, just as God came as Jesus Christ in the Gospels, just as God came in the Spirit and rested like tongues of fire in Acts 2 the prayer here is to come and reveal His awesome power to the nations. The point of the prayer is His presence. Do you desire that the Lord would make Himself powerfully known like this through His life changing presence? That He would come down? Isaiah 63:15 The stirring of your inner parts and your compassion are held back from me.
The Inner parts, described in Isaiah 63:15 does
not literally mean that God has inner parts, but that He does have deep and abiding feelings for His people. There is nothing superficial about this. While we may drift in and out of relationship with God, these deep and abiding feelings that God has are an anchor that cannot be moved. Have you ever been through difficult seasons where God feels far away? I have. There are times when God withholds the experience of His love. Season where the most loving thing for us is the absence of experience, because something needs to be learned. I heard recently, that when the student is taking the test the teacher is very quiet. There are other times that He pours out an experience of His love abundantly, because He knows that is what we need. In both Gods love is no more or less present, just our experience of it. Friends even in those difficult seasons, take heart, God is committed to us. The work of the cross is finished and the Holy Spirit has come as living proof of this. God does not change, but our experience of Him does change and He is the one who changes it, to change us. Isaiah 64:12 (End of the prayer) Will you restrain yourself at these things, O Lord? Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly? Isaiahs prayer begins and ends with that same persistent intercession. It does not wane, as he is asking God to make His presence known amongst us - Lord, dont hold back any of yourself from us. Come and change us with you presence because you alone are our redeemer. Isaiah 63:16 You, O Lord, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name. Do you desire God in such a way, that like Isaiah, this is your life changing, nation changing prayer? Isaiah 64:1-2 Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence - as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil - to make your name known to your adversaries, and that the nations might tremble at your presence!
