Steam Trap Selection Guidelines

For Competitor Cross References
Customers will often request a quote for a Yarway Steam Trap equivalent to an
existing installed competitors model. This may appear to be a simple request, however,
manufacturers rarely match their competitors design. It is very important to collect as
much information about the installation as possible, as we dont want to misapply a trap
and not resolve their problem. The cross reference request is an opportunity to
troubleshoot an existing installation and offer a solution that best fits the application.
Typically the customer will request a similar design to the existing trap and may give the
operating pressure and line size of the application. Trap capacity is not usually known but
is readily available on websites given the model. Capacity and system pressures are
critical to selecting a new model, however, additional application information is very
helpful to determine an appropriate technology. Drip and Tracer and Process applications
can have very different requirements and utilize different technologies as a result. Proper
sizing and selection of steam traps is essential for the safe and efficient operation of the
steam system. If minimal information is available, it is best to match technologies and
operating characteristics as closely as possible.

Most manufacturers offer all types of steam traps but tend to concentrate or specialize on
one or two technologies. YARWAY does not offer any Mechanical steam traps and
therefore concentrates on Thermodynamic and Thermostatic technology. Most
applications can be met with Yarway Steam Traps. Yarway specializes in the Unibody
concept which promotes in-line renewabilty. Other Yarway models also utilize designs
that promote easy in-line maintenance. There are a large number of steam trap
manufacturers but the Major Competitors include:
1. Spirax-Sarco offers a complete range of traps but primarily offers
Thermodynamic Disc traps and Float and Thermostatic (F&T) models. Note the
TD Series condensate loads dont match Yarway.
2. Armstrong mainly offers Inverted Bucket and F&T Mechanical traps. These
designs require selecting an orifice size for the model.
3. TLV has a wide range of products including disc traps and heavily promotes their
Mechanical free-float design. The TrapMan survey and data logger instrument is a
very popular Trap Survey tool. TLV offers a capsule to fit our Unibody trap.
4. Gestra concentrates on Thermostatic technologies and promotes subcooling
technologies.
5. Nicholson has a good range of traps including thermostatic, disc, and free float
technologies.
6. Watson McDaniel offers a range of thermodynamic, thermostatic, and mechanical
traps. They promote a direct replacement to our premium 721 model.
Additionally, most manufacturers now offer a Universal Connector which allows their
models to attach to an existing 2 Bolt Connector in the line. All three technologies,
Mechanical, Thermostatic, and Thermodynamic can use the Universal Connector. This
allows the customer to utilize different manufacturers and models in their system without
making piping changes. Yarway manufactures these connectors and traps also.

Cross Reference Questions:

Customer requests for a steam trap equivalent to XYZ model should be met with the
following questions:
1. What is the steam trap application? ie. heat exchanger, turbine drain, steam
tracing, main drip, etc.
2. Did the existing steam trap function properly prior to failure?
3. What are the operating conditions ie. Pressures, Temperatures. Have these
changed?
4. Do you know the required condensate load/capacity?
5. What connections are required? Size, NPT, SW, Flanged?
Some answers to these questions can often be unknown, however, any bit of this
information is valuable in selecting a replacement. A cross reference is an approximate
match only. Any differences in design or technology should be fully explained to the
customer. If the existing technology was functioning properly, try to maintain that
offering. If it is unavailable, offer another technology that is capable of meeting all of the
operating parameters.
Yarway has an extensive offering of steam traps to meet a wide variety of applications
and installations often with unique features and benefits that will improve their steam
system and reduce maintenance costs!

Unibody Plus Steam Traps

Yarway manufactures a unique steam trap concept that can offer the customer an
excellent solution for their steam trap population. The steam trap holder is a Chromoly
body with an integral strainer and blowdown valve that becomes part of their steam
piping. The Steam Trap is a capsule that threads into this holder. The capsules design
utilizes either Thermodynamic (Disc or Piston) or Thermostatic (Bellows) technologies
and are completely interchangeable.

A variety of capsules offers different Capacities and Pressures to meet a wide range of
applications. The bodies are available in , , and 1. The table below is a quick
reference to the models and capacities available to compare to competitive traps and offer
as an alternative.
