Design inquiry questions

FactualWhat is environment ?
Environment is living things and what is around them. It includes
physical, chemical and other natural forces. Living things do not
simply exist in their environment. They constantly interact with it.
Organisms change in response to conditions in their environment
https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environment

What is happening to the environment ?

Our environment is in need of a lot of work. The ozone layer is

quickly rotting away; the waters are polluted; and the rain forest
is rapidly shrinking in size due to the ignorance of land
developers. So why isn't anything being done? Everyone thinks if
they ignore the problem, it will go away. Granted there are many
people who do more than their share when it comes to taking
care of our planet, but it still isn't enough. We all need to get
together and start recycling our plastics and papers, sorting our
trash and reduce cutting down our trees. After all, we only have
one planet.

t-Is-Happening-To-Our-Environment/

What are the natural aspects of the environment?

The natural environment encompasses all living
and non-living things occurring naturally on Earth
or some region thereof. It is an environment that
encompasses the interaction of all living species.
Climate, weather, and natural resources that affect
human survival and economic activity.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_environment
How do we destroy environment ?
Pollution - land, air, water, and nuclear pollution have had many
adverse influences on the environment. Other pollutants also have
negative effects on the environment

Deforestation - natural habitats of animals are destroyed, the

organisms are forced to migrate or die, disrupting the food
chain/web and thus the ecosystem and also resulting in negative
effects on the environment.
Overfishing - organisms that relied on fish as food source are
forced to migrate or die, changing the original ecosystem resulting
in negative effects on the environment.
Harvesting natural resources for mass manufacturing - food
chain/web is
disrupted, organisms that relied on resource for survival are forced
to migrate or die, changing the original ecosystem resulting in
negative effects on the environment.
Clearing habitats for agriculture - destroys the habitat of
organisms living there, the organisms are force to migrate or die,
disrupting the food chain/web and thus the ecosystem resulting in
negative effects on the environment.

Over Farming on same plot of land - results in poor soil fertility,

making the land unsuitable for growth of plants resulting in
negative effects on the environment
Introduction of exotic species to a new environment - food
chain/web is disrupted, new species takes over and dominates and
therefore native organisms are forced to migrate or die, changing
the original ecosystem resulting in negative effects on the
environment.
Urbanisation - natural habitat is destroyed and replaced with
buildings, the organisms are forced to migrate or die, disrupting
the food chain/web and thus the ecosystem resulting in negative
effects on the environment.
Mining, logging, trawling and urban sprawl - destroys the habitat
of organisms living there, the organisms are forced to migrate or
die, disrupting the food chain/web and thus the ecosystem
resulting in negative effects on the environment.

Why is it important to care about the environment?

How about for your quality of life and that of other citizens of the
planet? How about for the choices you have of resources that are
now being depleted? How about for the air you breathe and the
water you drink?

Our natural environment becomes unbalanced and unsustainable

when it is polluted and stripped of its natural resources by overconsumption. Our lives are at stake as we find our health being
affected by environmental toxins in the air, water, and foods we
consume. Our earth is a fragile planet with limited resources. The
growing threat of climatic changes means everyone from
individuals to businesses must reassess their environmental
impact and daily choices.

If you dont think this situation is critical, here are some

facts to consider:

We use 50% of the Earths land area for food

production and 50% of the Earths available freshwater for

drinking.

The main source of water pollution is not chemical

waste but the excrement of farm animals.

About 70% of the worlds marine species are at

risk of extinction.

By the year 2100, extinction may reach one third

of all species now living.

Animals raised for food currently generate between

15 and 20% of methane emissions globally.

Every ton of recycled office paper saves 380

gallons of oil.

Around 50 million tons of paper are consumed

annually by Americans, more than 850 million trees are

cut down.

Each year, over 63,000 square miles are destroyed

resulting in more than half the worlds tropical forests

being lost.

We are changing the climate and health of the planet by our every
choice. What can you do to show you care about the environment
and contribute to its health and longevity? Lots. Here are just a
few suggestions. For more ways to save the environment, check
some books out of the library or do some online research.

1. Conserve energy at home.

Fix leaky faucets, turn off lights and appliances when not in use,
and buy energy efficient products. Check showerheads and toilets

for leaks, and consider low flow models. Reduce the settings on
water heaters and household thermostats; limit use of air
conditioning. Make sure your home is efficiently insulated.

2. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

Dispose of harmful materials properly, reuse or recycle things you

no longer need, and place recyclables in proper bins for pick up.
For every ton of paper recycled, 17 trees are saved.

3. Buy safe products.

Dont support toxic materials such as home improvement products

like paint with lead or food products with pesticides. Buy organic
produce when possible, and learn what products are safest for
your consumption and for the health of the planet.

4. Drive conservatively.

Carpool or take public transportation when you can, and

consolidate your trips for gas conservation. Observe speed limits,
and avoid rapid acceleration and excessive braking and idling.
Ride a bike and walk for local errands. Research how you can
reduce carbon emissions by keeping your car in top shape. Keep
tires properly inflated to improve gas mileage. Every 10 days,
drivers with under-inflated tires and poorly maintained engines
waste 70 million gallons of gasoline.

5. Green up your life.

Switch to solar energy at home if feasible, grow as much of your

own food as you can, use natural fiber clothing, and make your
own cleaning and beauty care products. We humans emerged as a
species about 200,000 years ago. In geological time, that is really incredibly
recent. Just 10,000 years ago, there were one million of us. By 1800, just

over 200 years ago, there were 1 billion of us. By 1960, 50 years ago, there
were 3 billion of us. There are now over 7 billion of us. By 2050, your
children, or your children's

children, will be living on a planet with at least 9 billion other people. Some
time towards the end of this century, there will be at least 10 billions

of us. Possibly more.

Is man the greatest threat to the environment?

We got to where we are now through a number of civilisation- and societyshaping "events", most notably the agricultural revolution, the scientific
revolution, the industrial revolution and in the West the public-health
revolution. By 1980, there were 4 billion of us on the planet. Just 10 years
later, in 1990, there were 5 billion of us. By this point initial signs of the
consequences of our growth were starting to show. Not the least of these
was on water. Our demand for water not just the water we drank but the

water we needed for food production and to make all the stuff we were
consuming was going through the roof. But something was starting to
happen to water.

An article on biodiversity and animal extinction.

Despite knowing about biodiversitys importance for a long time, human

activity has been causing massive extinctions. As the Environment New
Service, reported back in August 1999 (previous link): the current
extinction rate is now approaching 1,000 times the background rate and
may climb to 10,000 times the background rate during the next century, if
present trends continue [resulting in] a loss that would easily equal those of
past extinctions. (Emphasis added)

A major report, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, released in March

2005 highlighted a substantial and largely irreversible loss in the diversity
of life on Earth, with some 10-30% of the mammal, bird and amphibian
species threatened with extinction, due to human actions. The World Wide
Fund for Nature (WWF) added that Earth is unable to keep up in the
struggle to regenerate from the demands we place on it.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) notes in a video

that many species are threatened with extinction.

At threat of extinction are

1% out of 8% birds

1% out of 4% mammals

1% out of 4% conifers

1 %out of 3% amphibians

6 out of 7% marine turtles

75% of genetic diversity of agricultural crops has been lost

75% of the worlds fisheries are fully or overexploited

Up to 70% of the worlds known species risk extinction if

the global temperatures rise by more than 3.5C

1/3rd of reef-building corals around the world are

threatened with extinction

Over 350 million people suffer from severe water scarcity

Is this the kind of world we want, it asks? After all, the short video
concludes, our lives are inextricably linked with biodiversity and ultimately
its protection is essential for our very survival:

What kind of world do we want?, IUCN, December 2008 (Updated Jan 22,
2010)

In different parts of the world, species face different levels and types of
threats. But overall patterns show a downward trend in most cases.

Proportion of all assessed species in different threat categories of

extinction risk on the IUCN Red List, based on data from 47,677
species.Source: IUCN, pie chart compiled by Secretariat of the Convention
on Biological Diversity (2010) Global Biodiversity Outlook 3, May 2010

As explained in the UNs 3rd Global Biodiversity Outlook, the rate of

biodiversity loss has not been reduced because the 5 principle pressures on
biodiversity are persistent, even intensifying:

1.

Habitat loss and degradation

2.

Climate change

3.

Excessive nutrient load and other forms of pollution

4.

Overexploitation and unsustainable use

5.

Invasive alien species

Most governments report to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity that

these pressures are affecting biodiversity in their country (see p. 55 of the
report).

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) maintains

the Red List to assess the conservation status of species, subspecies,
varieties, and even selected subpopulations on a global scale.

Extinction risks out pace any conservation successes. Amphibians are the
most at risk, while corals have had a dramatic increase in risk of extinction
in recent years.

The summary..

What i summarise out of this whole article is that because of the massive
increase of the human population, animals and the environment does not
have the place on this earth so we have to try our level best to save and stop
these extensions. White tigers, marine turtles and many other kinds of
animals are in big danger. The animals are forced to migrate or die due to
our deeds, deforestation, melting of north and south poles, waste disposal
and many more issues. I conclude that this analysis report will help and

spread awareness to people. I wish we, humans will change and take a step
towards the environment. We need the nature and it is our home. We need
to protect it. Instead of wasting time in other unimportant stuff we can take
a small step which may lead to a big change. So start it from yourself and
spread this message to the whole world.
