PRELUDE.
The histories of towns, like the historie of individu~l , touch
at many points nd widely diverfe at others. Every one's life ex
pe~ience i , minutely told his
nd not his neigtibor''; so h the
existence and growth of every city and hamlet a stvry, p culiarly
its own. Young villages show the same re tie
desir to grow
into great towns, that children feel to become rapidly men nd
women. In the forcing proce of \he early ye rs there i mu ... h
left for oblivion to ate I a tray, which later historian would gl dly
recall.
Be it onr pl aant ta8k to~ ther nd record a i'ew 1~ ding ct
and incidents of the birth and childhood of P To UT. It' nam ,
age, grotrth, be uty1 excellence, fi m~ aud pro peels.
