Instructors Manual to Accompany Introduction to Health Care, Fourth Edition

Part I: National Healthcare Skill Standards Correlation

The National Healthcare Skill Standards Project was sponsored by the U.S.
Departments of Labor and Education, and conducted from 1992 to 1996 under the
direction of the National Consortium for Health Science Education (formerly the National
Consortium on Health Science and Technology Education). This consortium consisted
of representatives from industry and education, whose goal was to develop skill
standards for health care professionals.
Core standards were developed to serve as a foundation for occupations across the
health services. In addition, more specific sets of standards were created that apply to
the following clusters of health care occupations: therapeutic services, diagnostic
services, health informatics services, support services, and biotechnology research and
development.
The foundation standards and criteria, as well as other information of value to health
care instructors, such as ideas for curriculum development, are available at
www.healthscienceconsortium.org.
The content of Introduction to Health Care addresses all the core standards and the
majority of the accountability criteria. The following table contains a summary of the 11
standards, current as of May 2015, and the chapters in which each criterion is
addressed.
