Hello everyone,
After a bitterly cold winter, albeit with
good rains, we are looking at clearer
skies and some spring warmth.
September has arrived and lots
happening around town as usual.
Firstly, news on the proposed 9 Bridge
Road development.
For those interested in preserving our history
and those who put in an objection to the
proposed development at No 9 Bridge Rd, the
Administrators for Council passed a report
(26/7/16) to request the Minister for Planning
to apply interim and permanent heritage
controls to 9 Bridge Rd. This was an excellent
outcome and it is now up to the Minister of
Planning Richard Wynne to review this
request.
M e a n w h i l e C o u n c i l h a s p r e pa r e d
Amendment C354 which seeks to apply
permanent Heritage controls to 9 Bridge
Rd and it is now on public exhibition.
Submissions can be made on line, closing
date Monday 26th September 2016.
This process will mean that all parties are
entitled to put in submissions for or against
this heritage control amendment. There were
well over one hundred submissions objecting
to this proposed development and, to ensure
the amendment gets strong community
affirmation, it is important that submissions of
support for Amendment C354 are sent to
Council.
August Meeting unfortunately Lisa Neville
was unwell and an apology but she will be
joining us at our AGM in September.
At the invitation of the BHA, the Save
Barwon Heads Alliance spoke. Steve
Wickham and Gabriel Nagel from the SBHA
Executive and Ross Harrison explained their
organization, aims and future plans to
harness community support to retain the town
boundary. Their aim is to avert the increased
pressures on infrastructure, and the
significant changes to the built and natural
environment which development over the
western boundary would bring.
As directed by a motion passed at our recent
meeting the BHA has written to the Minister for
Planning asking he review a possible conflict
of interest with one of the CoGG
Administrators in connection with the current
Barwon Heads Structure Plan. This review will
be revisiting the prospect of extending the
western boundary. We will keep you posted
as to the Minister's response. (Motion &

August Minutes on website)

What's happening with the 100 person jury
for Geelong?
The BHA attended an information session run
by newDemocracy employed by the state
government to form a 100 person jury, to give
an opinion on how they think the community
should to be represented by council, including
the idea of an elected major and deputy
mayor. This jury will be randomly selected but
highly representational in terms of gender,
age and socio-economic background. They
will meet over a three-day period and present
their report to the Minister for Local
Government on November 26th 2016.
Depending on the minister's response this
process may override the work done by the
Victorian Electoral Commission covering
much the same ground.
Since the jury can hear submission from local
groups this may be an opportunity to bring up
unexplored ideas such as a separate
Bellarine Council.
Community Safety- as the police keep
telling us, lock up, lock up lock up!
Geoffrey Waite is a BHA representative on the
Bellarine Community Safety Group formed
under the auspices of the local member and
Minister for Police, Lisa Neville. The Chief
Commissioner Graham Ashton was at the
August meeting and stated that he was aware
that city crime rates were slowly penetrating
sleepy coastal towns on the Bellarine. Police
numbers on the Bellarine have increased and
the police are supporting the old neighbor
watch concept as an effective resource
against theft. Warning/advisory pamphlets are
to be given out to caravan parks and surfing
beaches during the holiday season. It is still
astonishing that many burglaries occur in
unlocked houses and cars. The message
from police is simple. Please lock your cars,
houses and garages, don't make things easy
for thieves. Also make sure your car keys are
hidden away as many thieves are after the car.
Pedestrian Safety Project -after six steering
committee meetings and two detailed
community consultations, Vic Roads has
commenced construction of the pedestrian
crossings in the township. Disruptions are
expected as the work progresses but the
outcome will be a welcome facility for the use
of pedestrian and better safety for cyclists.
Concern by some traders re Cadel Evans
Great Ocean Road Race on Australia Day
weekend 27-29th Jan 2017
Following last night's Union Cycliste t Ocean

Internationale (UCI) announcement, we are

pleased to confirm the Cadel Evans Great
Ocean Road Race has been successful in
securing a place on the coveted UCI
WorldTour racing calendar from 2017 2019.
Website.
Heather McCarthy and Ross
Harrison spoke about their concerns of the
effect on retail businesses by the road
closures over three days for this event,
especially as it was now to occur on the last
busy weekend of trading of the summer
period. In particular they were aggrieved that
the organisers of the race hadn't thought it
necessary to consult with businesses and
community groups that may be affected. This
would include surfers having little or no
access to parking, holiday makers and daytrippers would be restricted by roads into and
out of Barwon Heads being closed for long
periods on 3 consecutive days
And of course thank you to our members
who have rejoined, or are in the process of
rejoining for 2016-17, many of whom make
donations.
The on-going support of our community
is much appreciated.
Next meeting: AGM Monday 19
September. Our guest will be the Hon
Lisa Neville our local state
representative. 7.00pm
We appreciate feedback on any issues.

Special Spring Clean

Its so good to see the sun, smell the wattles, and the
freesias that bloom, uncared for, in so many places I
walk. But inside buildings, with better light on walls
and windows, it is so obvious that a spring clean is
necessary. The building that is our Op Shops Main
Shop was the venue for many children to come to
Sunday School during the fifties. It was also used for
Guides, church groups, and special church occasions.
The walls were probably painted at least thirty years
ago, and their very dated pale green colour was
looking very tired. While I was away during July into
August, our marvellous volunteers had decided that
they would wash then paint the walls to give me a
great surprise when I arrived back. Those of you who
regularly come to shop with us will appreciate just
what a huge project this would be. Just the thought of
removing the enormous number of items on shelves is
daunting! However, the washing of walls was done,

The two garages, which are the Sorting and Showrooms, were only built on 2002, and 2005. They will
not require a special spring clean, and in any case,
the Show-room always looks immaculate to me since
the ladies who work there manage to put so many
items outside each time we open, so the customers
will be able to walk around and browse more easily. It
is tricky that their efforts are often made more difficult
because donors are unaware of the huge number of
items that they have to send to the tip. They have
asked that soft toys that have become soiled, toys and
childrens games that are broken or damaged, and
puzzles missing vital parts could be put in your own
rubbish bins, rather than come to us.
My two youngest grandkids just LOVE to fossick in the
toys and excellent books in the Show-Room. They will

join many others who we hope will come during the

forthcoming school holidays. I was surprised to realise
that Term 3 finishes in schools on September 16th. So
for the days from Tuesday 20th., till Saturday October
1st. We will be open for five days of those
weeks....Tuesday till Saturday. Our opening times
never change, being from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. We
volunteers are always aware that during the holidays
many kids, AND THEIR PARENTS, sleep in. It is often
frustrating that we do not have crowds arriving early,
but just as the shop is preparing to close, we are
inundated by customers. In our Main Shop we do
bend the rules, and stay open a little longer, but it
suits most of our willing workers to come early, and
get home for lunch about 1.15 p.m. We do discuss
changing our hours at many of our Staff Meetings,
but it seems that our decision does not change. With
changeable weather, we will still keep some woollens,
coats etc., but watch our signs, since we frequently
offer cut-price clothing and things such as glass-ware.
I do not advertise these snap sales, but they are
most worthwhile. Meanwhile, our books are without
doubt well worth investigating. I read 22 books while I
was away, and commented to our excellent Book
Ladies that many of the books we reject were in
better condition than some I borrowed from the
Mission Beach Library!
We do look forward to seeing you all during the
coming holidays. God bless you,
Helen Edwards, Shop Supervisor

2016
Our August concert was SOUNDS FROM THE SCREEN with a lovely blend of
harmonies with 4 clarinets performing a mixture of classical and contemporary music
and reminding us of an amazing number of films with lively and unique interpretations
arranged by themselves! The performers who made up CLARITUDE were Megan,
Ginger, Bronwyn & Stephanie who performed on the impressive bass clarinet & they
obviously thoroughly enjoyed working & playing together!
They began with a two-part suite from an early silent movie with music called Cinerama which began out of sight
(like the Wurlitzer Organ which rose from below floor level to accompany the films at the Regent Theatre in
Melbourne!) & appeared for the second movement which was fun!
Films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral produced Arrival of the Queen of Sheba; Misty with Clint Eastwood
followed by New York New York written for Lisa Minelli with Frank Sinatra making both versions very popular! A
surprising number of films featured the beautiful Clair de Lune. A 1952 black and white Charlie Chaplain film
featured a combination which included Limelight, Baby Elephant Walk, Pink Panther, God Father & Love
Story (I think!) Makin Whoopee speaks for itself with Baker Boys & others, & Por Una Cabeza produced the tango
dance flavour!
Love is an Open Door from Frozen & then was followed by Colours of the Wind composed by Alan Menken, a
very popular & prolific composer for Walt Disney,eg.Pokahontas & Little Mermaid; he won at least 8 Oscars! The
theme from The Game of Thrones provided a complete contrast to the latter! Acker Bilks Stranger on the Shore
was written for his daughter Jenny & was 55 weeks in the top charts! Then we had John Williams Star Wars theme &
Hans Zimmermans Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnnie Depp.
It was amazing to learn how often certain music was in so many & varied films! The Grand Finale was the 1930s
Puttin on the Ritz with Fred Astaire but the audience showed their appreciation so enthusiastically, we were
rewarded with an encore of Skippy!
Our next concert will be held on Sunday, 11th September at 2.30pm in the Anglican Church & will present a small
group of The Geelong College very talented & hard-working wind instrumental students performing a wind quartet, a
wind trio & a pianist performing A Mus A repertoire!
The Barwon Heads Chorale is performing their special concert entitled SONGS of HOME and HEART featuring
favourites from 40s musicals and jazz numbers through to 60s swing and mellow tunes, with singalong for everyone
at the end! It will be held in the Barwon Heads Community Hall on Sunday 18 September at 2.30pm. Afternoon tea
provided after the concert.

ALL FUNDS RAISED AT THE CONCERT WILL GO TO THE ROAD HOME PROJECT,
actively supporting and accommodating WOMEN and CHILDREN who are
VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE in the Greater Geelong and Surf Coast region.
Donation: Members: $10; Visitors: $15. Do stay for afternoon tea following the concert!
Enquiries: please phone Jenny on 5254 2580.

Barwon Heads Primary School

Its always great to celebrate special occasions with the students and staff at Barwon Heads
Primary School. Our Principal, Darren Roskosch posed the idea and in typically enthusiastic
fashion, the staff, students and parents responded. The occasion? The Inaugural Olympic
Opening Ceremony.
The abundant colour and level of activity was amazing. Not only did we have a real Olympian in John Trevorrow and his real
Olympic torch, students marched in appropriate colours representing a range of countries, each with a flag bearer and sign. Our
parent community also took part as they represented Switzerland and carried their flag in the parade. There was the entry of the
Olympic flag, carried in traditional manner and a Harley Davidson motorbike which added a thunderous sound effect and fun to
the entrance of the torch. A representation of Christ the Redeemer was held high as the cauldron below was lit by the final torch
bearer, Johnny Gow, grandson of John Trevorrow. The final element was the releasing of pigeons (representing doves) which
drew gasps of surprise and amazement from the crowd. The whole event was a brilliant spectacle and one that will be hard to
beat in four years time. A huge thank you needs to go out to the major organisers of this event Tracy Davey and Rachel
Curtain and of course to everyone who jumped on board.

Who says school is boring?

The Barwon Estuary

Australian Pied Oyster Catcher ~friendsofthebluff.com

Swamps make so much more
sense when there is water. For
instance, after a prolonged
drenching Salt Swamp is finally
holding water after many long
months dry. Salt Swamp is that
sweep of salt marsh next to the
Barwon Heads airport and is so
named because.......well probably
because of the time honoured

Australian tradition of naming stuff

after the bleeding obvious- one
tree hill, five mile creek, Mt
Dissappointment, Barwon Heads!
And now all those dry clay pans and unvegetated
scrapes, hollows and dips are filled with water just
in time for spring. When all the swamps and
lagoons that drain into the Barwon Estuary are
dry, birds tend to congregate in and around the
permanent water areas but as the swamps fill with
water (and a host of larvae, shrimp, algae and

bugs) the birds disperse to partake in bouts of

unashamed bird flirting coupled with fits of
unbridled cloacal action.* And there is no shortage
of birds. Coots, duck, rails, snipe, moorhen, swamp
hen, duck, spoonbill, heron, egret, crake, duck,
swan, bittern and ducks all take advantage of
these swampy ponds and their adjacent
vegetation. Seemingly impenetrable thickets of tall
reeds like phragmites and ghania, juncus
tussocks, grassy overhangs and prickly
muehlenbeckia tangles all hide nests and chicks
and facillitate a hasty retreat from danger.
*The male wedge-tailed eagle is a huge bird with a
two metre wing span and reputedly capable of
snatching a sheep of the country's back. However
this mighty and powerful symbol of male avian
dominance does not have a penis. Nope, all birds
have a cloaca- a vent like opening used for not only
expelling intestinal and urinary waste but also for
exchanging genetic material possibly during a
romantic moonlit night in a bog followed by a
prolonged period of regurgitating midge larvae into
the gaping bill of the resultant progeny the waste of
which is expelled through a developing cloaca.
Ah spring! It is definitely the best time to take in
unslaked avian carnality in our swamps. Send your

HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER ADDRESSES BARWON HEADS FORUM ON REFUGEES

Australia has developed the harshest policy on the
treatment of refugees and asylum seekers in the
western world, said internationally renowned
lawyer David Manne at a public forum in Barwon
Heads recently.
Speaking to a group of over 200 interested locals, Mr Manne, director of Refugee
Legal, said since 2001 successive Australian governments have stripped away the
traditional human rights safeguards that had been in place for decades.
The U.N. High Commission for Refugees advisory board member highlighted that
the health of a society is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable, to loud
applause from the crowd.
Mr Manne said Australia played a pivotal role in setting up the Refugee Convention
after WW2 and had a lead role in championing human rights in the decades that
followed.
He said genuine policy dialogue is needed on an
alternative approach, as there are options other than extremes such as boat turn
back with offshore detention.

Bellarine for Refugees meets at 3.45pm on the last Tuesday of the

month at Starfish Bakery, Barwon Heads.

BONE BROTH

Bone broths are nutrient-dense, easy to

digest, rich in flavor and they boost healing.
Bone broth or stock was a way our
ancestors made use of every part of an
animal. Bones and marrow, skin and feet,
tendons and ligaments that you cant eat
directly can be boiled and then simmered
over a period of days. This simmering
causes the bones and ligaments to release
healing compounds like collagen, proline,
glycine and glutamine that have the power
to transform your health.
Bone broths contain minerals in forms that
your body can easily absorb: calcium,
magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur
and others. They contain chondroitin sulfate

and glucosamine, the compounds sold as

pricey supplements to reduce inflammation,
arthritis and joint pain.
The combination of animal products and
vegetables seemed to have synergistic
effects, working together to be more
beneficial than either alone.
When choosing bones, source grass fed or
free range and the essentials are bones, fat,
meat, vegetables and water. If youre
making beef broth or lamb broth, you should
brown the meat before putting it into a stock
pot. Fish and poultry are fine to put in a pot
without browning first. Add a bit of apple
cider vinegar to your pot to help draw the

minerals from the bones.

In a slow cooker, place roasted bones with
lots of veggies, spices & aromatics of
choice...I use stronger flavours with beef and
lighter flavours with chicken or fish...cook for
24 to 48 hours (checking water level to make
sure its always at least 4-5 above bones
and veg. Cool then strain liquid of all bones
& veggies, reserve...discard remainder then
bottle into passata bottles or jars. Label then
freeze or keep in fridge for up to 4 days to
use with soup, risotto, or season & drink hot
with parsley as a broth served with toast and
butter.

Do I really need to floss?

Last month we discussed tooth brushing technique. To
go along with brushing twice a day you also need to
clean between your teeth.
If your skipping cleaning between your teeth, you are
missing half of the surfaces in your mouth. Most of the
cavities we see start between the teeth which shows
how important inter-dental cleaning is. The most
common form of inter-dental cleaning is flossing.
Flossing TechniqueYou can wind a length of floss around your middle
fingers and then slowly wind down the length of floss
as you move from gap to gap. Use your thumb's and
index fingers to guide the floss between the teeth.

Careful for the papilla between your teeth- the v-shape

area of gum between the two teeth. Move the floss
gently down one side of the papilla and wrap it around
the edge of the tooth and pull the floss upwards
removing any plaque on that surface. Then in the
same gap gently move the floss down the other aspect
of the papilla and up the inside of the next tooth. No
sawing motion required!
Interdental brushingIf you have bigger
gaps, implants or
bridges you may have
to use inter-dental
brushes instead of
floss. Choose the
biggest brush that fits
the space without
resistance and brush
from both the outside
and inside of the tooth.
You may find you need
a combination of
different size brushes or still use floss in the tighter
spaces as well.
See www.oceanbreezedental.com.au if you missed
last months 'brushing technique'.

Spring is on its way and with it
comes great news: our Feasibility
Study has confirmed sufficient
demand for a community arts hub
in Barwon Heads.
This has caused a lot of publicity
and buzz.
It has been a long process but Stage Two will now begin and this involves site options analysis and preparation
of a business case for the Hub. Several spots around town will be under consideration. We should have more
news on this exciting process soon.
The Bellarine Arts Trail planning is also well underway and Karen Shirley will soon launch the Arts Trail
Map outlining all artists involved in the trail, details about their practice and what to expect to find when you visit
their studio. Nineteen venues are involved with over 38 artists participating. Studios and group venues will be
open in Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove over the Melbourne Cup long weekend on 29th - 30th October. This
event has been a huge organisational feat and Karens focus and dedication will no doubt ensure it will be a
great success. From mid September, look out for the map in cafes and all the usual places as we are distributing
them far and wide. You will also be able to download the map from our website

Barwon Coast is a Committee of Management

appointed by the State Government with
responsibility for the management of 13km of
coastal crown land from 7W Collendina to 42W

Our Committee members are local residents appointed
with consideration of the skills and experience that they
have to offer in the management of this important piece
of coastline.
OUR ENVIRONMENT:
August to April is the time we need to be alert to wildlife
on our beach. Although we have wildlife all year round,
now is coming into peak season where we will see the
threatened Hooded Plovers commence nesting season,
seals will be seen more resting on our shores, penguin
numbers may also increase. A responsible pet owner will
be aware that these animals are dependent on our
coastline to survive and will ensure their dog is not
allowed to roam free, and will also be respectful of other
beach users. Help us care for our magnificent coastline.
If your dog has a tendency to want to run, keep it on a
lead close by you, put your dog on a lead when wildlife is
around, and always clean up after your dog. Together we
can make a difference.
NATIONAL COAST TO COAST CONFERENCE:
The biannual National Coast to Coast Conference is
being held from August 29th till September 1st this year in

RIVERVIEW FAMILY CARAVAN PARK - OFFICE

REDEVELOPMENT:
Second stage underway:
In 2014-15 Barwon Coast started the much needed
redevelopment of the office at Riverview Family
Caravan Park; with the full redevelopment of the
caravan park office to be completed over 2 years.
The first stage was completed in late 2015 and saw
the provision of a dedicated laundry to service the
cabin accommodation portion of the business; a
staff lunch room and outdoor staff courtyard; and
relocation of the existing kiosk to the southern end of
the park. It also involved improvements to parking
for caravans checking into the park and increased
single vehicle parking at the front of the building.
The second stage is now well underway and
involves redevelopment of the front office and the
building entrance to provide greater internal usable
space for both staff and visitors. Included is
improved and safer pedestrian access to the office
from both car parks.
Trak Constructions successfully tendered for the
work and expect to complete the final stage before
December this year.
CYLINDERS BEACH ACCESS 31W BARWON
HEADS
Barwon Coast is continuing to work on options for
access from the 'Cylinders' car park down to 13th
Beach. Costing and design work is progressing and
a funding application to the State governments
Coastal Environments Program (CEP) Public
Access and Risk has been lodged. The last round of
the CEP program provided the funding for the
removal of the old access and for the planning of the
replacement facility.
The site of the old staircase, lost late last year, is still
active and presents almost insurmountable
problems for re-building on the same site. Detailed
construction drawings are currently being
developed for an alternate site at the western end of

the car park.

Barwon Coast knows it is a popular site and have
received input from stakeholder groups supporting a
replacement access in some form.
We will continue to work toward the best outcome
possible and to also keep the community updated as
planning progresses.

POSSUM MAGIC
Possum Magic is a beautifully illustrated story by the very
talented Australian author Mem Fox. This is a story about
Grandma Poss, who makes Hush invisible to protect her
from danger.
The story in our local towns however is very different. With
the increase in development, loss of trees and dense
bushes, many of our Ringtail Possums and Brush-tail
Possums are being displaced adding compromising their
health even further. Most of this displacement of these
animals is happening during the daylight. Possums are
nocturnal animals and should not be out wandering the
streets or reserves during the day. When possums are
down on the ground they are vulnerable to predation by
natural predators and domestic animals.
Again this week Barwon Coast has had to deal with
another Ringtail Possum predated on by a domestic pet.
Due to the animal sustaining horrific injuries some time
back, it unfortunately was kinder to euthanize. This is
becoming an all too familiar occurrence within our coastal
reserves, with over 13 possums having been dealt with just
this winter. Both species of possums are protected wildlife
under State legislation.
It would be nice if there were more people like Mem Fox to
make these animals invisible during the day, but there
aren't. Should you have a possum on your property, are
considering cutting down a tree or dense shrub, or would
like to install a nest box and need some advice, please
contact the team at Barwon Coast or visit our website. We
would also love to hear other helpful tips some of you may
already be doing.
We have already lost our kangaroos, wallabies and koalas,
and we stand to lose so much more by doing nothing.
Together we can make a difference.

COMMUNITY ARTS GARDEN

Spring is on its way! And as we all know it is one of
the busiest times of the year in the garden and a great time for
planting a whole range of vegetables that don't cope with Winter
cold. It is essential to make sure your beds are completely weed
free, then add some well broken up compost, a little fertilizer, give it
all a good dig over and you are ready to go. Seedlings to be planted
over the next month or so include the following:
Asparagus, beetroot, chives, lettuce, parsnip, peas, potato, rocket,
kale, bok choy, spinach and snow peas.

Growing Rhubarb:
Jason ONeill

Silvereye - Friends of the Bluff

It's still not too late to divide your

rhubarb and replant (or purchase some new crowns). This delicious
herbaceous perennial lives for a number of years, so although it can
die down during winter months it does bounce right back up again in

spring, making it an (almost) continual harvest. Only the stems of rhubarb are eaten. In fact the leaves contain toxic levels of oxalic
acid. Rhubarb plants can be divided by cutting through the crown (centre of the plant), ensuring that 'eyes' are present on each
division. Rhubarb can be grown in a wide range of soil types but they need to be well drained. Deep loam rich with organic matter is
the ideal soil environment. It does like a lot of nutrients too, so organic matter with animal manure is preferable.

Coming Up September/October.
Gourmet Edibles: September 17th September 2 4 p.m.
Michelle from Sprouthouse Farms will be giving a talk on how you can sprout your own Gourmet Edibles and Microgreens.
Sprouts and microgreens supply quality nutrients that our bodies assimilate easily, and by weight, are the richest source of
vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants of all fresh food. Learn how to have all that dense nutrition right on your kitchen benchtop.
Also learn how you can use delightful tiny edible flowers and seeds for garnish and decoration. Starter packs will be available
(however there is no obligation to purchase).
A lovely Spring outing to enjoy with tastings and afternoon tea. Places will be limited so enrol early by sending an email with your
details to: workshop@bhartsgarden.com (We will send a return email confirming your enrolment).
Fee: $10 (Which includes afternoon tea).

SAVE THE DATE. SUNDAY OCTOBER 16TH ~ OPEN DAY AT THE GARDENS.
Planning is underway for a Spring Open Day to celebrate and share with you latest developments at the Garden.
Full details will be advertised shortly including activities, information sessions and presentations that will be held d
uring the day.

Having your own plot at the gardens: If you would like a plot at the gardens please drop us a line and we can keep
you in mind when one becomes available. For those who aren't interested in having a plot, but like to offer their support, you
can become a Friend of the Gardens. Currently plot fees for a year are $60 full plot/$30 half plot and Friends membership is
$15. We appreciate your support and interest.

LOWER BACK PAIN

Lower back pain
While there are no guarantees, it is well known that active individuals who
regularly exercise to maintain normal flexibility and muscle strength to
support their spine have the best chance of avoiding lower back pain.
Healthy spine postures and safe lifting techniques at home and at work also
reduce your risk of developing lower back pain. You should discuss with
your therapist the specific postures and activities that you perform on a
daily basis. They will aim to help you to understand how to position yourself
and move with the lowest risk of injury.

Treating Lower Back Pain

With accurate assessment and early treatment, most lower back pain
injuries will respond extremely quickly to musculoskeletal therapy allowing
you to quickly resume pain-free and normal activities of daily living. With the
correct lower back pain exercises and specific treatment guided by your
health care team of physiotherapists, osteopath and massage therapist,
back pain relief is very achievable. Most severe lower back pain sufferers
will recover within 4 to 6 weeks. However, this time can vary greatly as it depends on the nature of your back
injury, the treatment plan that you develop with your therapist, and how compliant you are with your treatment and
lower back pain exercises.
Treatment should include: Pain Relief and Treatment, Restore Normal Function, Restore Full Function, Prevent a
recurrence.

Exercises to help Prevent Lower Back Pain

Recurrence of lower back pain can occur. The main reason it is thought to recur is due to insufficient
rehabilitation. In particular, poor compliance with deep abdominal core muscle exercises. You should continue a
version of these back exercises routinely a few times per week. Your physiotherapist will assist you in identifying
the best exercises for you to continue indefinitely.

Get involved in the Barwon Heads Structure Plan UPDATE

A STRUCTURE PLAN IS an important planning document because

it provides directions on how townships should grow and develop. It identifies

key strategic planning issues in relation to whats important to community
members and what they value about their place.
Every township has a structure plan and all are updated from time to time.
The Barwon Heads Structure Plan was first prepared 10 years ago and the
final version adopted by the City of Greater Geelong six years ago.
Much has changed in that time and there are emerging issues around the
demographic profile; development pressures; housing diversity; residential
character; the rural and natural environment; climate change; flooding,
transport and infrastructure to name a few. Its time to update the Plan
to make sure we shape the future place to proactively respond to these
issues.
At the same time, town planning and urban design specialists Hansen
Partnership will undertake a Barwon Heads Residential Character
Assessment, which will guide any new development in the town.

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE

Thank you to all our supporters
The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade recently
celebrated its 80th anniversary at a formal dinner
and awards night in August. It was a chance to take
stock and acknowledge our role in the community
and reflect on all the incidents we have attended
over the years.
As well as recognising our members with various service awards we also
took time to acknowledge the community support we have received,
through their time and in-kind support and through donations. The
generous support from these organisations, community groups and
individuals goes a long way to enabling us to purchase additional
equipment, which would not otherwise be possible.
For this edition of Talking Heads we'd like to shout out and thank the

Marvelous Music In May

a Huge Success

WHAT'S COOKING AT
THE LOBSTER POT?
Rise and Shine
Wakey, wakey good people. The seasonal alarm
clock has gone off. Hibernation is over.
Throw those blankets aside , open your bleary eyes.
and see the blue sky and sunshine. Let me take
you, dear reader, to your wardrobe and reunite you
with your almost forgotten summer clothes. Right
there in the dark corners of the middle drawer.
Behind the Superman outfit. Really?
At your age?
Never mind, everyone makes errors of judgement.
You will have also found shorts, Tee shirts and
bathers. In the shoe rack you will find sandals and
thongs. Get them all out and give them a clean.
Wash away the evidence of other errors of
judgement. Let's get ready for a fresh, new start to
the warm, sunny weather that's on it's inevitable
way. That is very much the same as what's been
going on at the Lobster Pot. Also known as The
Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre. It's the closedlooking green building on the riverfront near 'At the
Heads' restaurant.
The Friends of the Lobster Pot have been holding
working bees to refresh and renew the exhibits for a
fresh new start to the upcoming hectic opening
season which happens at about the same time as
your summer wardrobe gets plenty of use. That is
after Boxing Day until Australia Day from 1.004.00p.m. daily. Plan your visit now. The Friends of
the Lobster Pot is a volunteer organisation of likeminded people interested in the natural and cultural
heritage of our beautiful river estuary. If that sounds
like you you would be welcome to join the group. It's
not too demanding once the spring cleaning is over.
You just need to be awake and alert & happy to
share your knowledge of the natural world around
us.
You can contact the group through Barwon Coast.
Call in at the office or phone Maddie Glynne. I must
finish now it's breakfast time.

With the days stretching out and

hopefully becoming a little warmer
the hooded plover breeding season
will be underway before we know it!
With all the threats they face, the hoodies themselves
have a hard time on the beach just surviving and trying
to raise their young but the 'plover lovers' aka
volunteers sometimes experience a hard time from
some beach users.
At times when out on the beach, looking after the
hoodies and their chicks, we might encounter schools
of thought that don't match ours.
They often come from a minority who do not want to
accommodate the Hooded Plover on 'their beach'.

One comment we might hear is 'My dog has the right to

walk here!' (the "I pay my rates so I'm entitled to walk
my dog where I like!!" attitude) from an individual who
refuses to leash their dog or continues to use a dog
prohibited area.
Here we need to acknowledge people can sometimes
love their pet so much they can lose perspective of
what it means to be part of a community and the
broader world around them.
Should people and their pets be able to go anywhere
and do anything regardless of the consequences? Is
extinction a human right?
To help people think about what it means to have
rights, it can be useful to think of their pet experiencing
what the bird experiences.
Do people come into your home and bring with them
something that would crush, maim or kill your pet?
Do people take away your backyard and force your pet
to hide for hours on end until it's safe to come out?
Do people get angry and threaten your pet when you
ask them to please be careful in your home?
Are there only a handful of dogs remaining in the
world?
The average beach user doesn't regard the beach as
habitat and tend to think of beaches as public open
spaces that have been created for their recreation.
When we visit the home of the wildlife we share the
planet with, we can use it in a way that does no harm.
BirdLife Australia is working hard to educate beach
users and our volunteers work so hard to put up signs
and fences so beach users can use the rest of the
beach knowing which part to avoid.
We all have the right to survive, let's not forget wildlife
have that right too.

plover monitoring: http://mybeachbird.com.au/ or

SAVE BARWON HEADS ALLIANCE

May June 2017. The first part of the planning journey
will be around 12 months and one of the key issues that
is uncertain is whether the Plan will be endorsed by
Administrators or a new Council structure in mid/late
2017. From there, we head into the Planning Scheme
amendment process; this is more formal requiring
written submissions (based on evidence as well as
aspirations) that will be addressed by the Planning
Panel Victoria.
A Panel hearing will occur later in 2017 or early 2018.
Save Barwon Heads previously fundraised to secure
the support of a legal team and will be asking for the
community's help to continue to use the same legal
team led by a prominent planning QC.
We are scheduling another musical event after the
success of our last two sellout shows. This will be in
January 2017 and is shaping up to be a fantastic
community event.

Our organization has been in

existence from 2007 with the
one focus of maintaining the
town boundary in its current
location.
This focus has also enabled us
to:
support the protection of the surrounding
internationally listed wetlands (Lake Murtnaghurt) which
sits between Barwon Heads and 13th Beach Golf
Course; and

preserve the green break between Barwon Heads

and the surrounding planned residential developments
(eg Warralily, Armstrong Creek)

We have had overwhelming support for our community

led campaign from 2007 2010. Our representation to
the Planning Panel Victoria couldn't have happened
without fundraising for legal representation at the Panel
and the community submitting over 1000 written
responses (objections) to the expansion of the town
boundary. These contributed significantly to the Barwon
Heads Structure Plan being endorsed with the town
boundary being maintained in its current location.
Save Barwon Heads is and will continue to be a local
initiative with the same focus since forming 10 years
ago.
We are ready to go again to protect the town boundary

(this time with a focus on the south and north side of

Barwon Heads Road). COGG have announced a review
of the Barwon Heads Structure Plan. We had hoped that
this would be in 2020 as the Plan generally has a longer
life, however Save Barwon Heads recognize that issues
(other than the town boundary) that where identified in
response to the development of the 2010 Plan have
amplified and that all these issues have collectively called
for a wholesale Structure Plan review.
Save Barwon Heads is back again this
time with a slightly new look, we have
added social media to our
communications and hope that the
community like and share our photos
and information on Facebook and use
our website as a resource to refer to for
planning information and reference
material that we have gathered since
2007.
We know that there is nothing
better than being updated in
person, so we will be out with the
card table in the main street on
weekends closer to this school
holidays and look forward to
catching up with you all and
making new friends (and
members!).
Some of the responses to the review of the Barwon
Heads Structure Plan requested by COGG will use
social media as well as focus groups and meetings
in addition to written responses. In this edition of
Talking Heads we understand that these will be
clearly articulated. Please continue to look out for
Save Barwon Heads information in Talking Heads.
We will have a monthly column and will continue this into
2018 over the period that the consultation process on the
Structure Plan is undertaken. This will provide tBarwon
Heads and Talking Heads readers with a local perspective
and a simple and factual outline of key issues to consider
that impact on protecting the town boundary.
Save Barwon Heads again encourages all the community

BARWON HEADS CRICKET CLUB

Well done to you all on getting
through another winter. It was a
fairly standard winter in the end. A
few days in the low teens and a few
when it threatened to snow, the
Tigers disappointed their fans as did
the Heads. The unusual feature of
this winter has been that it was seen
off by an Olympics, which for the first
time was held in winter in the host
city.
Of course the host city is in the tropics, unlike our fair
village, and the average winter temp is slightly north if 22
degrees and it had just the slightest feeling that the
whole project was a cynical exercise in rubbing it in to the
people of southern Victoria, but now we have come to
the end of our winter anyway and cricket is little more
than a month away.
There have been some changes in the club over the
winter. Paul Summers has taken the reins from Russell
Hyland as president. Paul, better known as Stormy, has
been a long time member of our club. He's served many

seasons as C Grade skipper, been the club's BPCA

delegate for a number of years and served as treasurer
and Senior Vice President in past seasons as well. Hatt
High has joined the committee and will hold the position
of Junior Vice President, Sam Liistro has taken on the
job as bar manager, former president Trevor Hill has
returned to the committee after a long absence, Paul
Lardner has taken his membership to a new level and
joined as well and Lisa Snookes who is the daughter of
life member, former premiership player and past
secretary Geoff McCoombe. The club is very lucky to
have all of these people willing to offer their time and
energy towards the running of the up - coming season
and we look forward to working together.
The position of senior coach has been filled by Ash Muir
for the next season. Ash is a very seasoned campaigner
in cricket terms, having played many seasons of district
cricket in Melbourne. He brings a wealth of knowledge of
the game, both technical and strategic. The club intends
to field at least a full complement of teams in the BPCA
as well as junior teams again this season. Junior teams,
as always will depend on the numbers, and a number of
discussions have already been held on how the
numbers stack up. Junior registration will be held on
Sunday September 4th, but you can register any time
after this date if you miss out.
Training has already been under way since mid-July and
some of the lads are looking quite sharp in their the

technique and actions. The philosophy is to

strike/bowl/catch/field/throw as many balls as possible
before game one so that we have grooved the
mechanisms of the body to a high degree. Some of the
older bodies have had a bit of trouble with throwing off
another winter coat and the idea of ice baths has
crossed a few older minds. Naturally it goes no further
than a thought, but it is the thought that counts after all.
My dear wife has been doing some study into the mind
and it appears that in some cases the sub conscious
mind is unable to distinguish reality from the imagined,
so I have imagined myself in an ice bath after every
training session. Of course the muscular system can
distinguish very clearly between imagination and reality,
and the day after a ninety minute bowling session is
identical to the day after being trampled by the entire
Melbourne Cup field, but I am confident that an actual ice
bath would not alleviate that.
So. Welcome to the spring. The days are getting longer
and the leaves have returned to the trees and with them
the thrills, ecstasy and agony of finals footy. Soon
enough the gentle chatter of the slips and the clapping of
the fielders as well as the slap of willow on leather will
return to the village green. It's time for cricket and I'm
excited. Mainly because I'll have some subject matter to
write about.
God bless the summer.
More next month.
Matt Dunell

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

Le Tour de France
Finally, for another year, the Tour de France is over. It's
been hard going for some members of the BHCC. It
seems quite unusual to me that many members of our
fine club are so passionate about cycling that they would
rather watch it on TV late into the night rather than
actually riding the following morning. Go figure!
I asked the team about the TDF. Their thoughts, any
highlights, funny moments or any anecdotes and here
are some of their comments.....
-When does the 2016 Tour actually start?
-A procession, worth watching for the scenery, which is
something Chris Froome should do. He's so focused on
his power meter he must barely know what France looks
like.
-It's taken me a few years, but at last I understand what
the abbreviation 'TDF' stands for.
-I hardly watched it - even when I was hosting, although
major 'chapeau' to Wayne for organising BHCC's TV
nights.
-The rest days aren't for the riders, they're to allow the
poor Australians watching it to get a good night's sleep.
-Next year I'll train for the TDF and watch Giro first hopefully I'll be in
better form to cope
with the late nights.
-Looking forward to
my first good night's
sleep tonight for 21
days!
-One picture says it
all....
And, finally, from MIA rider Jeff. We miss you on the bike,
however your literary contributions to our club far
outweigh your riding skills, especially if anyone is
unlucky enough to draft behind him on the time trial.....
There was a young man called Froome,
From who Richie Porte did groom,
He got in a stew,
On Mont Ventoux,

Then as a runner he did bloom.

BHDHC
In the last issue of Talking Heads, I mentioned that I was
touched by what the representative from the cricket club
wrote about our ride from Sydney to Barwon Heads,
way back in April. A distant memory. At first, I thought
that Matt's words of encouragement were very kind.
However, one source from the said cricket club has
given me a tip-off. My insider has informed me that they
boys at the Village Park are up to no good. They are
weakening us with their kind words before going for the
kill. The July edition of Talking Heads had the
following.... 'on the subject of the dandy horse club'. It
got me thinking. What are they up to? Should we
change our name to the Barwon Heads Dandy Horse
Club? BHDHC, at first I thought had a good ring to it.
Then the penny dropped. DH doesn't just stand for
Dandy Horse, does it? We all know a DH when we see
one. And don't take us for a bunch of DHs. You thought
you could trick us, but we are just a little bit smarter than
you anticipate, even if we are all middle aged, enjoy
wearing Lycra and sipping on caf lattes and looking like
DHs. Cheers Matt.
That's all our cycling news for this month. Spring is
nearly here and the weather is warming up more and
more. More chicanes are being built around town to
provide another challenge on the road. Thanks COGG.
Maybe next it might be time to plug a couple of the
potholes that the torrential rain has helped to create.

BARWON HEADS FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB

So as the season draws to a
close, its time to reflect the years
performance on and off the field.
Our Juniors have showed that our future is in
good hands, with the U14 boys winning their
divisional grand final, the U16 boys
contesting in finals, and the U18 boys a
chance to play in a grand final if they get
through the preliminary final this week.
The youth girls returned to the competition
this season with competitive results in all
games played.
The reserve boys just missed out in finals with
the last game of the season being "a do or
die" match against Anglesea and
unfortunately finals will have to wait.
The seniors through a injury riddled year
finished just outside the finals with the intent
to re group and improve for 2017.
We are pleased to announce the
appointment of the joint Senior coaches for
2017 with home grown boys Mitch
Herberson and Bobby Wallace ready to
take over the helm. On his departure we
thank James Garvey for his two years
preparing the boys and wish him and his
family well on whatever they decide to
undertake, and i'm sure we will see him in
some capacity around the club.
Off field we will be hosting some post season
activities, so be sure to look at facebook or
our web site for updates.
Have a safe and happy break and see you all
in 2017..... Go GULLS

This photo at right was taken at one such lunch.

We drove on the old lavender-lined road from the
ritzy Hvar harbour, into the countryside, when my
friends the Dubokovic family hosted us for lunch.
We ate Under the Bell - slow roasted lamb cooked
under an iron bell on an open fire, washed down
with home-made wine. Heaven!
