Transmission - Important information


Make yourselves familiar with the content of the transmission instruction manual.
Damages caused by failure to comply with these usage instructions are excluded from
any / all Jason guarantee coverage.
During transport and installation special attention should made to the following topics.

3. LIFTING AND ON SITE TRANSPORT
The transmission support flanges or special arranged lifting lugs on the upper part of
the case shall be used for lifting the complete unit.
Lifting by the shafts or components is not allowed.
4. MOUNTING OF COUPLINGS ETC.
If couplings, pulleys, pinions, sprockets or similar are to be fitted, the tapped
centering hole in the shaft end faces should be utilized for assembly.
Parts to be fitted thus should be furnished with keyways, for parallel keys to DIN
6885/1. For other methods, for instance shrinking-on, specifications agreed on when
the order was placed should be observed.
Fitting of couplings by means of heavy blows of impact is not allowed because
of possible damage to the bearings, retaining rings, etc.
ARC welding on the transmission is NOT ALLOWED. Sparks generated by
loose contacts will damage bearing races / rollers and ruin the bearing. High
flexible coupling rubber element SHALL NOT be mounted until engine is tested
and ready for normal operation

6. PREPARATIONS BEFORE INITIAL START UP
Before starting up, all gear units must be filled with the recommended oil to the
correct level. The lubricant selection table in Lubrication Data Sheet lists a number
of gear oils with brand names. (Other brands may be approved after written
acceptance from Jason). Check for correct direction of rotation!
7.0 ACCESSORIES
7.1 CLUTCH ( if fitted)
The clutch is a hydraulically operated multi disc type.
Clutch plates are steel and sintered bronze.
It is hydraulically engaged and spring released.
7.2 OIL PUMPS
A gear driven lubrication / clutch oil providing pump is flanged to the gear housing
and driven by the input or intermediate shaft rear end.
The oil pressures indicated on the transmission nameplate must be maintained.
7.3 OIL FILTERS
Lubrication and clutch oil filter are mounted on pump outlet oil circuit.
Spin-on type filter cartridges.
The cartridges are disposable, do not wash them.
7.4 OIL COOLER
A shell and tube type oil cooler is fitted at the discharge side of the lubrication oil
pump.
The oil cooler materials are selected for sea water cooling. The cooler shall have
counter flow. A throttle valve to be fitted at cooler inlet. Free flow outlet of the cooler

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Jason Transmission Mod. SRG-Series

Single reduction gear special design for high speed marine and off-shore applications.
The Jason model SRG range gears cover ratings from 200 to 8000 kW and may be
supplied for CW or CCW input rotation. A heavily ribbed and webbed gear housing
ensures precise alignment of gear wheels and shafts under all load conditions. The gears
are single helical, in nickel alloy steel, precision machined, case hardened and grinded.
The shaft bearing arrangements are high quality roller bearings to take the radial and axial
loads.
The transmissions are of dry sump type, gears and bearings being pressure lubricated
from an external system. The pipe work, leading from a single oil supply manifold, is made
of carbon steel.
Provisions are made for fitting on distant reading temperature probes.

GENERAL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS


GENERAL DESCRIPTION

0. INTRODUCTION
These installation instructions form part of our supply and is valid if no other specified
requirements were agreed on when the order was placed or when no particular order- or
equipment instructions are issued. Failure to comply with these instructions can damage
transmission and void warranty.

1. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Unless specifically ordered, the gear is delivered without any guards over rotating parts.
Such guards must be fitted by the purchaser according to local and national safety codes to
prevent accidents.
Such guards should preferably be of a non-sparking material.

2. DELIVERY
Prior to dispatch all gear units are thoroughly inspected with test run to ensure that they
comply with the order specifications. During the period covered by our warranty the
gearboxes may be opened up only with our expressed permission, otherwise it will release
us from any claims under warranty.
The shaft extensions are coated with a rust inhibitor, which is resistant to seawater and
tropical conditions for a period of six months. Applying nitro dilution or any other suitable
solvent, on no account, however, can easily remove it should abrasive paper be used.
Gear units are run-in with an oil offering protection for normal transport conditions. Overseas
transport included, and covered storage for a period of 6 months until units are put into
operation.
The outside coating of shop primer is resistant to weak acids and alkalinize, oil and solvents.

3. TRANSPORT
The lifting lugs on the upper part of the case shall be used for lifting the complete unit.

FORCING BY MEANS OF HEAVY BLOWS OR IMPACT MUST BE AVOIDED BECAUSE
OF POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO THE BEARINGS, RETAINING RINGS, ETC.
ARC WELDING ON THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT ALLOWED. SPARKS GENERATED BY
LOOSE CONTACTS WILL DAMAGE BEARING RACES/ROLLERS AND RUIN THE
BEARING.
5. INSTALLATION AND ALIGNMENT
The gear unit should be rigidly mounted on a level, firm foundation, making sure to provide
space for oil draining and adequate air flow around the housing with facility to check the
inner part of the units through the inspection cover opening.
Great care should be taken to obtain the exact alignment of the unit with prime mover and
driven machine, shaft deviation to be no more than 0,05 mm on both sides.
Unevenness of the foundation flanges must be compensated very carefully with shims to
eliminate any possibility of housing distortion. After proper alignment and when full foot
contact has been established with the foundation, tighten the foundation bolts.
When the gear is installed on a steel structure or if external forces are acting on the unit, it
should be secured against axial movement by means of dowels or lateral stops.
6. PREPARATIONS BEFORE INITIAL START UP
Before starting up, all gear units must be filled with oil to the correct level.
The lubricant selection table in Lubrication Data Sheet lists a number of brand name gear
oils according to the recommendations of the oil companies. They are typical products only,
and equivalent, foam-free oils of other manufacturers can be used. However, we cannot
guarantee the suitability of any given lubricant. If the required viscosity range is not
available, always use the next higher grade.

The gear oil should be filled into the gear unit by pumping trough the low pressure filter.
Disconnect the pump discharge hose at the filter inlet manifold and fit the hose from a
temporary filling pump. Only fresh, unadulterated oil must be used.
When filling with oil wait until the oil is evenly distributed before checking the final oil level.
The oil dipstick have two marks, minimum and maximum levels, between which the oil level
should always be maintained. It is recommended to fill the units with oil up to the HIGHER
mark.

7.0 ACCESSORIES

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

7.1 CLUTCH

The clutches is a hydraulically operated multidisc type.


Clutch plates are steel and sintered bronze.
It is hydraulically engaged and spring released.
Normally the clutches needs no readjustment as the wear of discs is automatically
compensated for by the piston stroke.

7.2 OIL PUMP

A mechanical driven pump (item 20) is fitted to the gear housing.

7.3 OIL FILTER


Oil filter Item 22 is combined for both lub. oil and clutch oil circuit.
The cartridges are disposable, do not wash them.

7.4 OIL COOLER


Shell and tube type oil cooler (24) is fitted on top of the gear housing.
The oil cooler materials are selected for seawater cooling. The cooler shall have counter
flow.

7.5 INSTRUMENTATION
Thermometer and pressure gauges (15, 10 and 12) are fitted, together with temperature and
pressure switches (11, 13 and 14) plus a junction box for signal wire termination.

7.6 CLUTCH CONTROL SYSTEM


The clutch is engaged by means of a hydraulic cylinder integrated in the clutch package.
Oil is led into the cylinder from the pump (20) via a valve block fitted at the top of the gear
housing, though a swivel sleeve coupling at the rear end of the primary shaft.
Bores in the center of the shaft leads oil to the clutch cylinder.

The same swivel has also supply bores for cooling oil from the lub. oil manifold.

GENERAL
DESCRIPTION
The clutch control valve block is a sandwich
type
with:
-

24 V DC 2 way solenoid valve with spring return (1)


Combined adjustable throttle valve (6)
Check valve (2)
Adjustable pressure control valve (3) is fitted in the end of the valve
mounting block
The deverter valve (4) are pressure control for the lub. Oil circuit.
Throttle valve (6) adjust flushing oil flow to the clutch.

When the solenoid is not activated, there is free flow through the solenoid valve (1), check
valve (2) and into the lub.oil circuit.
Activated solenoid directs the oil through the throttle valve (6) and into the clutch cylinder.
The pressure control valve (3) is preset to an operating pressure of 28-32 bar.
With the adjustable throttle valve (6) the clutch shall be "soft" engaged (approx. 0,5 sec.) and
a quick disengagement.
8. INITIAL START UP

Check oil level in gear housing (dip stick)

Push button "Clutch on" and check clutch pressure, 28-32 bar.
Adjust pressure by loosen the locking nut, and adjust with a hex. socket head
wrench.
Disengage clutch (push button "Clutch off")
( The solenoid valve may also be operated locally .
Check input coupling for vibration.
Check water supply to lub.oil cooler.
Engage and disengage the clutch to check the function.
Adjust time for engagement if necessary (approx 0.5 seconds).
Check the complete gear unit for noise, vibration, lub.oil leakage etc.
Check oil level.
Disengage clutch and stop prime mover.

When the gear unit is started up for the first time, it should, if possible, run with low load for
about one hour. If no irregularities are noticed, the load may be increased up to full load with
the gear unit under continuous observation.
Normal operating temperature should be 30 - 50 oC and the lub. oil pressure about 3 bar.
As the load increases the temperature of the gear unit will rise but should not exceed 80 oC.
Short time peak temperatures of oil and gear unit up to max.85 oC are quite harmless and
will not affect the perfect operation of gear units with roller bearings.
Low oil pressure may indicate that wrong oil is used. Too high temperature may indicate the
same, or an inadequate water supply to the oil cooler, or misalignment in the installation.

IN ANY CASE DO NOT RUN THE GEAR UNTIL THE FAULT HAS BEEN FOUND AND
CORRECTED.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

When the installation is running properly, check oil level, pressure and temperature for every
30 min. during the first 4 hours to be sure that the equipment has been properly run in.
Gear units out of operation for a long period of time should, if possible, be operated, loaded
or unloaded for a short time every 3 weeks or so. If short time operation is impracticable at
these time intervals the gear units must be protected against corrosion.
When the clutch is disengaged, flushing -and cooling oil is lead into the clutch
trough the throttle valve (item 6) mounted on top of the manifold.
The flow rate may be adjusted with a hex. socked head wrench.
The flow of oil between the clutch discs create some friction and the FiFi pump
will slowly rotate with the engine running and the clutch disengaged.
Too little flow will allow heat to build up and consequently ruin the clutch.
With normal working temp., the oil flow may be adjusted so that the FiFi pump turns about
10 - 50 rpm.
This will keep the pump bearings in good conditions and avoid brinel ling.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
GENERAL DESCRIPTION

O. INTRODUCTION
This instruction covers normal operation of the series SRG transmissions, and is an integral
part of our supply. It is valid for SRG type gears if no other specified instructions were
agreed upon when the order was placed, or when no particular order or equipment
instructions are issued.
This instruction does not cover initial start up. For initial start up, see Installation Instruction.
1. CHECK OUT BEFORE START UP
Normally no particular check out is necessary before start up. If the gear has not been in
operation for an extended period, then it is advisable to check the oil level in the lube oil
reservoir. Replenish the oil if necessary.
2. START UP
The SRG series gear may be started and run up to full load and speed immediately.
No special precautions need to be taken unless the temperature is low,
15 degree C or below. Then the gear should run at low speed until the oil temp.
has reached normal room temp. of approx. 20 degr. C
3. RUNNING
If the transmission is not fitted with alarms or automatic shutdown, the oil level, pressure and
temperature should be observed periodically until they are stabilized.
Note that excessive oil temperature may indicate that the cooling water supply is insufficient.
Check oil level and temperature periodically.
4. ADJUSTMENT DURING RUNNING
No adjustment is necessary if the gear has been properly adjusted during the run-in period. If
the oil temperature is too high or too low as a result of changes in the cooling water supply, an
adjustment of the water supply is needed. Cooling water supply is normally controlled by
means of a hand operated throttle valve.
5. SHUT DOWN
No particular procedure recommended.
Gear may be shut down from full load/speed combination.

6. CHECK AFTER SHUT DOWN
Check oil level in lube oil reservoir. Replenish if necessary.

7. EMERGENCY PROCEDURE
If one of the following conditions occurs, the transmission should be shutdown immediately.
-Lube oil temp. to high and increasing.
-Lube oil pressure too low and dropping.
-Lube oil level below low.
-Extensive mechanical noise.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
0. INTRODUCTION
This instruction covers normal maintenance of the series and is an integral part of our
supply. It is valid for SRG type gears if no other specified instructions were agreed upon
when the order was placed, or when no particular order or equipment instructions are
issued.
1. PERIODICAL INSPECTION
A. INTERMITTENT DUTY
Gears that are running intermittently, i.e. less than 8 hours per day or 60 hours per weeks,
should be inspected once per month after initial run in. The same goes for gears that are
running less than 30 hours per weeks and with up to 4 starts per hour.
This inspection should cover the following checks:

Water-in-oil contamination
General appearance of gear and accessories.
Gear couplings

WHEN RUNNING

Oil temp.
Oil pressure
Oil leakage
Cooling water leakage
Mechanical noise

B. CONTINUOUS DUTY
Gear that are running continuously, i.e. more than 8 hours per day or 60 hours per week,
should be inspected once per week after initial run in.
This inspection should cover the following checks:

OIL LEVEL
Should be between upper a lower mark on level gauge/dipstick. If below mean point, refill oil
until level reaches upper mark on level gauge/dipstick.
If oil level is below lower mark on level gauge/dipstick, a severe leak must be suspected.
An oil level above upper mark on level gauge/dipstick usually indicated that cooling water is
leaking into the lube oil system. A test sample should then be sent for examination to the oil
company supplying the lubricant.
FILTER CONTAMINATION
The simplex or duplex full flow oil filter is fitted with replaceable filter elements(s). This filter
element(s) should be replaced after the first 12 hour.

WATER-IN-OIL CONTAINMENT

GENERAL
DESCRIPTION
If the oil level in the transmission starts
to increase,
it is usually caused by water leaking
from the cooling system into the lube oil system.
A test sample should then be taken from the bottom of oil sump and sent to the supplier of
the lubricant for examination.
A rapid increase in the oil level when the transmission is stationary, indicates a major leak
and the gear must then NOT be used.
If the cooling water is sea water, even small amounts may cause corrosion and pitting, In
such cases, the oil should be replaced completely without awaiting the results of an
examination.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
Transmission exterior should be clean and without traces of corrosion. Check transmission
housing, flanges, and external oil pipes for traces of oil or water leakage. Check
instrumentation for any mechanical damage. All wiring terminals for electric instrumentation
should be tight and free from corrosion.
If the gear unit is fitted with an air breather (filter) clean the filter unit as soon as a layer of
dust is noticed.
For this purpose the filter must be taken off and flushed with white spirit or a similar cleaning
agent and thereafter dried or blow though with compressed air.

OIL TEMPERATURE
The lube oil temp. should be between 40 and 60 degr. Celsius under normal operating
conditions and with an ambient temp of 20 C.

OIL PRESSURE
The lube oil pressure should be 1-5 bar under normal operating conditions and with normal
oil temp.
Lube oil flow to the various bearing and gear arrangements are controlled by fixed orifices, a
change in lube oil pressure may adversely affect the distribution of oil to the lubrication
points.

OIL LEAKAGE

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Check all pipe, flanges and fittings for lube oil leakage when transmission is running with
normal oil temp. Check also gear housing with flanges, external lube oil tank (if fitted), oil
cooler and oil filter.
Tighten up flange bolts and pipe fittings. If normal tightening does not stop an eventual
leakage, replace gaskets or pipe with fittings.
Do not use special sealants without prior approval from the gear manufacturer.

COOLING WATER LEAKAGE


Check all cooling water pipes and heat exchanger for water leakage when the transmission
is running. Tighten up flange bolts and pipe fittings. If normal tightening does not stop an
eventual leakage, replace gaskets and pipe with fittings.
Do not use special sealants without prior approval from the gear manufacturer.
Check cooling water outlet to drain for traces of oil leakage.

MECHANICAL NOISE
The transmission should normally run smooth with only a slight whir from gears and
bearings.
A distinct screaming noise from the oil pump may indicate that the pump is cavitating. Check
pump suction pipe.
A grating noise from the bearing arrangements combined with increased bearing temp. may
indicate faulty bearings.
Increased gear noise may indicate that the gear meshing is faulty or that the lube oil temp. is
to high.
If these changes are noted during normal services, the drive arrangement must be stopped
as soon as possible and the gear dismantled and checked.

OIL CHANGE AND CLEANING

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

After approx. 500 operating hours, or max. 2 years, the oil must be changed for the first time.
Drain the oil while it is still warm.
When changing oil, the transmission should be refilled with the previously used grade of oil.
Different grades of oil or oils obtained from different manufacturers must not be mixed.
After the initial refill, subsequent oil changes should be made every 2000 - 5000 operating
hours, depending on working conditions. The oil change intervals should not, however,
exceed 24 months.
For transmissions operating in very humid, climates or with frequent great changes in
ambient temp., there is a risk that water may condensate in the oil reservoir. Under such
conditions the water content of the lube oil should be checked every 4 th. month.
When changing the oil, the gear housing, external oil reservoir (if fitted) and pipe system
should be flushed through with the same grade of oil used for operating the gear. Absolute
cleanliness is essential, and it is particularly important that no foreign matter is allowed to
enter the interior of the transmission or its auxiliaries. Always fill oil trough a filter.

3. LUBRICANT SELECTION TABLE


The oils listed in the Lubrication Data Sheet are blended minerals oil with additives to
increase their age resisting properties, give better corrosion protection and improved
lubricating behaviors in the mixed friction area corresponding to H characteristics of DIN
51524 (1).
When changing the oil in the gear unit, it should be refilled with the same grade of oil.
Different grades of oil obtained from different manufacturers must not be mixed.
Properly planned and correct lubrication, as well as the use of suitable lubricants, are
essential if the performance potential of high grade gear units is to be fully utilized. This
ensures maximum operational reliability and a long working life for the gear unit.
