FIJIS FIRST COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER

FIJI AIRWAYS IS 65
Fiji Airways announces initiatives designed for the community

By LUKE NACEI
Fiji Airways has reached another milestone achievement as they
celebrate their 65th year anniversary of flying.
Fiji Airways Managing Director
and Chief Executive Officer Andre
Viljoen upon their celebration announced two new initiatives designed for the community.
The first is under the Fiji Airways
Wings of Hope Charity.
Wings of Hope is primarily funded through the onboard Cash for
Kids programme that Fiji Airways
has along with contribution from
the Company and staff. The primary beneficiary for any Wings of
Hope project must be children.
The Wings of Hope, under the
ambit of the Governments AdoptA-School Programme, will adopt
two schools in Taveuni, and assist
them in their rebuilding efforts following Cyclone Winston.
These schools, which are listed
under those up for adoption, are
South Taveuni Primary School
and the South Taveuni Secondary
School.
The two schools were selected
as they are an integral part of the
community on Taveuni, which is a
key Domestic route served by Fiji
Link.
Id like to acknowledge the
presence of Mr. Eric Narayan,
Chairman of the Board of these
schools. Ladies and gentlemen,
Im sure you will agree that adopting these two schools is the perfect
project for Wings of Hope. Our chil-

dren are our future, and deserve all
the support we can give them, Mr
Viljoen said.
The second initiative is about
conservation and protection of
Fijis pristine environment.
Substantial carbon emissions
are a reality in the Fiji Airways business.
While they continue to get aircraft which are more fuel efficient
and reduce our carbon footprint,
they can always do more.
In addition to Fiji Airways ongoing work with the Mamanuca Environment Society Mr Vilijoen announced another green initiative
by Fiji Airways
Fiji Airways will plant one tree
for every single international takeoff from Nadi International Airport

by their aircraft. This will amount

to more than 3,000 trees planted
in a year and the project will be
known as Every Take OffOne
Tree.
The Fiji Airways will do this in
consultation with environment
groups and the Government, and
will target for these trees to be
planted all over Fiji.
As much as possible, they will
assist their partners to source and
plant trees indigenous to Fiji.
Im proud of the legacy this will
leave behind for our country and
the Fijian people, he said.
Mr Viljoen thanked all that
joined to celebrate their 65 years
of flying.
Firstly I would like to thank the
support and guidance of the Gov-

ernment of Fiji who has stood by

us through our toughest challenge
in fact the success we are enjoying
today would not have happened
if Government had not worked
together with the Board and Management to transform the Company. Restrictive policies and practices which hampered our growth
were changed, and these changes
allowed us to expand our Network,
acquire modern aircraft and rebrand us into a genuine expression
of the Fijian spirit. AG thank you
very much, secondly you the committed and dedicated Employees
of Fiji Airways (The Team).
Thirdly, the passion, support
and the pride of the Fijian people.
At every turning point in our history, the people of our country have

been there, willing us on. Many

National Airlines fail because they
lack this support, but not us.
My friends, Fiji Airways it is
truly blessed to be a Fijian and because of this commitment from all
these People, we have a responsibility towards them. We have been
supporting numerous projects in
our community, contributing towards the education of Fijian children, and towards conserving our
environment, he said.
In 2016, 65 years after our
humble first flight, Fiji Airways
continues to fly the Fiji flag with
pride, connects our passengers to
more places in the world, brings
the world to our home, and soars
with pride to a promising future,
Mr Viljoen said.

Fiji - the way the world should be

FROM THE DESK

7s Reward
The reward for the Fiji 7s men and womens team is still
on the run after their great outing at the Rio Olympics in Brazil last month.
With celebrations continuing and organizations pouring
in gifts to show their happiness after the boys success.
The boys who won gold medal from Rio have been
awarded state medals and as well given their cash prizes for
the mile stone achievement.
Winning Gold from Rio now paves a greater path for the
boys as they will now embark their rugby career with lucrative contracts from abroad.
However the Gold medal winning coach Ben Ryan has
made his mind of leaving our shores to further peruse his
coaching career. Ryan has won many of the Fijian hearts by
winning that gold medal from Rio.
Cheers to the natives of Serua who gifted Ryan with three
acres of land and named him after a chiefly name, Ratu Peni
Raiyani Latianara. The good news is Ryan and his wife Natalie have plans to return to Fiji.
Kudos to our 7s playmaker Vatemo Ravouravou who has
signed a three months contract with the Western Sydney
Rams in the 2016 Buildcorp NRC season.
Fiji will forever be proud of our sevens boys with their
historic win from win.

Being the hub of the Pacific, Fiji has everything that a spectacular tropical paradise has to offer from private island resort accommodations, top class restaurants to white sandy beaches, inbound
tours, jet boat rides, hot air balloon rides, mountain trekking, inland tours, eco tourism, sky diving,
helicopter rides, cruise trips, scuba diving, massage and beauty parlours, vibrant night life and a
lot more than any other destination in the world offers

Villagers living along the

Lautoka and Ba corridor are
happy with what the Prime
Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
decision on not changing the
Fijian Flag.
The Prime Minister Voreqe
Bainimarama has issued a
statement confirming that
there will be no change done
to our National Fijian Flag.
KalesiDoidoi, 22, a resident
living in Drasa Vanuakula in
Lautoka said she was happy
that our Fijian flag is maintained.
Our Fijian flag is unique and has some symbols that signify our tradition, values and customs. What the Prime Minister
has done is really good for us, she said.
Lorima Voreqe, 34, echoed similar sentiments.
I thank the Prime Minister for such decisions of maintaining our Fijian Flag, he said.
In a statement the Prime Minister said : It has been deeply moving for me as Prime Minister to witness the way Fijians
have rallied around the national flag as our Rugby Sevens team brought home Olympic Gold for Fiji. And I know this sentiment is shared by most Fijians.
Plan on changing our Fijian flag had been apparent to the government in February.
While I remain convinced personally that we need to replace some of the flags colonial symbols with a genuinely
indigenous expression of our present and our future, it has been apparent to the Government since February that the flag
should not be changed for the foreseeable future, Mr Bainimaram said.

feedbacks@media.com.fj We thank you our readers for your valued support
towards The Jet Newspaper.

It is a question of resetting national priorities as our people continue to recover from Tropical Cyclone Winston. The cost
of any flag change is better spent at the present time assisting Fijians back on their feet.
He said it is time for all Fijians to display their flags to show their support for our National Fijian 7s team who won gold
from Rio.

Parental support vital

Youth clubs can only

prosper if the right support
system is in place, especially
from parents.
This was the sentiment
shared by the Minister for
Youth and Sports, Hon.
Laisenia Tuitubou, while
speaking at the villages of
Malhaa and Noatau in Rotuma while meeting with their
communities.
The Youth and Sports
Minister reiterated this message as there was a need
to revitalise youth engagement in a number of Rotuman communities as the
issue of a lack of interest in
participating in youth devel-

opment programs had been

brought to his attention.
Youths need the support
of their elders and community leaders, in particular
the support of their parents
especially if they are to succeed in whatever undertaking they choose to focus
on, said Hon. Tuitubou.
The main purpose of
our visit to your island is to
attempt to get youths more
involved in their communities through participating in
the programs and services
offered by our Ministry and
to also get youth clubs reactivated or re-registered
with us in order to access

these services and I ask that

you render your support to
your youths as they will take
up the mantle of leadership
in your community in due
time, added the Hon. Minister.
Malhaa chief Gagaj Faki
Taug assured the Hon. Minister of the communitys
support and asked that the
young people of Malhaa
communicate their thoughts
more openly with their elders.
We are always willing
to give our support to the
young members of our community and they know fully
well that they will have to

shoulder the responsibilities

of our village when we are
no longer here to give them
advice, said Gagaj Faki.
I look forward to the registration of our youth club
with the Ministry as this will
bring more programs to assist in their development as
future leaders of Rotuma,
said the chief of Malhaa.
Minister Tuitubou and
the Minister for Fisheries
and Forests, Hon. Osea Naiqamu, led a Government
delegation on a 3 day consultative visit to the island
of Rotuma to ascertain relevant development agenda
on the island.

Engaging Youth in Organic Farming

By LUKE NACEI
A two year project aimed at
reviving organic agriculture
in the Saivou District of Ra
was launched in Rakiraki at
Nabalabala Village.
The Project launch is
hosted by the Foundation
for Rural Integrated Enterprises & Development.
With this Farm to Table
project FRIEND will work
with six villages in the
Saivou District to promote
Agriculture as a viable career option.
Farm to Table is about

establishing systems where

people can buy food directly from growers.
Farmers benefit by being
able to reap more profit
from their goods then they
can earn at the market, and
consumers enjoy knowing
how their food is grown and
delivered to their tables.
The focus on Organic Agriculture as the production
method will also address
climate change issues that
sustain the health of soils,
ecosystems and people.
Project interventions
revive traditional methods
of farming, harvesting, and

storing food to ensure supply of healthy meals even

during extreme climate
conditions.
These traditional practices
have sustained past generations before the advent of
food processing, manufacturing, and trade in Fiji. The
project will promote cobenefits including improved
livelihood though value
chain development and
healthier food options.
The Farm to Table Project
is funded by UN Sustainable Development Fund
and works through SPC to
engage youth in Fiji and
Vanuatu in Organic Farming.

Fifteen police officers

that will be leaving our
country to serve abroad
have presented their itatau to the Commissioner
of Police.
Twelve of these officers
will be deployed to Dafur
and three of them will be
conducting duties in Golan.
In accepting their itatau

the Commissioner of Police emphasizes to the

officers the importance
of their role whilst on UN
duty.
The head of the Police
force asked to set their
priorities right and be very
mindful of every decision
they make on the mission
field.
The men were also re-

minded of their reputation by the commissioner

because if they violate any
of the rules and guidelines
of the UN mission not only
their personal reputation
will be on the line but their
families, the Fiji Police and
even their vanua and of
course Fijis reputation will
be tainted.

The Fiji Roads Authority continues its footpath

upgrading works around the
country aimed at improving pedestrian access and
safety.
Fiji Roads Authority Chief
Executive Officer John
Hutchinson says they are
upgrading various footpath
sections in Suva, Raiwaqa,
Nabua, Raiwai, Nausori,
Nasinu, Lami, Sigatoka,
Lautoka and Ba.
The most recent is the
construction and upgrade
to twenty sites in a capital
project contract awarded
to Hot Springs Hire Services
Limited.
The total contract value of
approximately FJ$953k of
the twenty sites will include
excavation and removal of
existing concrete footpath
and driveway, preparing
of footpath sub grade and

base-course and construction of new concrete

footpath and driveways,
he said.
Mr Hutchinson said the
contractor is working on
schedule and has already
completed work on some of
the sites in Nausori, Nabua
and Nasinu.
FRA wishes to thank the
public for their patience and
for allowing our contractor
the room to safely carry on
with the work.
This project is scheduled to
be completed by the end of
October 2016.
Meanwhile, what had been
difficult road conditions
that have affected residents
living and working along
Koronivia Road outside of
Nausori are now being addressed.
Working under the Fiji
Roads Authority Mainte-

nance program, Fulton

Hogan Hiways Construction
Manager, Phil Tombs said
his crew has significantly
improved access, especially when faced with rainy
weather.
He said the work involves
stabilizing and sealing of
an 850-metre section with
particular attention paid to
its drainage system.
This is a major upgrade
because we are installing a
total of 80 culverts as well
as re-grading and aligning
drainage that will stop any
future flooding, leaving the
road in much safer and
smoother condition, Mr
Tombs said.
Koronvia road serves more
than 4,000 residents, most
of who work in Suva and
Nausori but also a number
of yaqona, dalo and vegetable farmers

Agriculture key sector

for growth
By LUKE NACEI
The Pacific region needs a vibrant, sustainable and resilient agriculture sector to be
able to stipulate growth and build a resilient
pacific society.
This were the sentiments echoed by the
Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu while
officiating at the United Nations Economic
Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
(ESCAP) capacity building workshop on
Building Climate Resilient Agriculture in the
Pacific Small Island Developing States here
in Nadi.
The initiative to host a sub-regional expert meeting in Fiji was borne out of a need
to build a resilient agriculture sector in the
pacific particularly in response to the growing climate variability and climate change
scenarios that we all have been facing in recent years, Mr Seruiratu said.
With small island states in the Asia Pacific
region vulnerable to the impact of climate
change, he says building resilience was not
a question of choice but rather a collective
imperative.

Road improvements underway. Photo: SUPPLIED.

Our goal is to find a mechanism that can
deliver on the ground technical assistance to
implement resilient and sustainable agriculture practices in the pacific SIDS, he said.
The two days workshop which was attended by senior executive from the region
aimed to strengthen south cooperation and
sharing experience and adaptive practices
between Asia and the Pacific.
Meanwhile, the outcomes of the workshop would be discussed at the Pacific Agriculture Ministerial conference that will be
held next year.

Family receives water for the first time

The struggle of making up to nine trips a day, walking to a water filling point about 50 meters from their home to fetch water for
drinking, washing, cooking and bathing has ended for a family in upper Veisari, outside Lami. Government, through Water Authority of
Fijis (WAF) successful installation of a pressure management system in the area, has fixed the intermittent supply issue faced by the

Climate change awareness

is vital says Uni Fiji VC

University of Fiji Vice Chancellor Professor Prem Misir. Photo: UNI FIJI.

Strengthening of public awareness

needs to be a central component of adaption to climate change.
University of Fiji Vice Chancellor professor Prem Misir made this keynote address
while officiating at a climate change symposium at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka.
Professor Misir said that climate change
has a massive impact on the economy.
The impacts of climate change will affect almost all sectors, human and animal
life. It will inevitably affect all sectors of the
economy including health, water, food and
shelter, Professor Misir said.
He said broadening the coverage of climate change awareness will be a bonus for
the country.
Broadening the coverage of available interventions would greatly improve adaption
measures now. More sustainable policies
on household energy, electricity generation

agriculture and nutrition, transport and the

built environment could each bring significant reductions in major climate change ill
effects, he said.
These local and immediate benefits
would offset a large part of the cost of climate change mitigation and provide a strong
political and personal motivation for action.
Professor Misir said the symposium intends to provide a platform for research institutions, universities, NGOs, government
agencies and enterprises from within the
region with an opportunity to display and
present their works in the field of climate
change adaption.
It is a great pleasure for me to be part of
this of this process together with the team
from University of Fiji. I am really honored
and excited to hear from the participants
about the challenges faced, priorities and
solutions to address climate change in the
Pacific, Professor Misir added.

Psychosocial support President challenges

By LUKE NACEI

By LUKE NACEI

President Major-General (retd) Jioji

Konrote has challenged the young boys of
the Fiji National Club Comboree to remain
focus and persevere in what they want to
achieve in life.
Mr Konrote made this comments while
opening the ninth Fiji National Club Camboree in Lautoka.
This is the challenge I want to leave with
you our cubs and all youths of Fiji. If you
remain focussed and persevere in what you
want to achieve in life, nothing becomes impossible. You are Fijis future and you can
continue to demonstrate to the world that
Fiji can be as good as any other country in
the world Mr Konrote said.
These values are reflected in our promise which makes a young cub like you different from other young people of your age.
He said with the Scouts/Club movement
in Fiji reaching another milestone achievement, as young members of the club should
continue to learn and improve their skills

and performances as they look forward to

their transition into becoming our scouts,
scouts masters and leaders of the movement tomorrow.
To you our young Cubs of the Movement,
you will find that life can be a very different
experience because within the Organisation
you will be guided, encouraged and helped
in realising and fulfilling your potential and
ambition in life. Your training and interaction with fellow Cubs should develop your
characters with improvement to your discipline and ability to be part of and work together successfully as a team, he stressed.
One of the aims of this Camboree is for
you to Learn and at the same time have fun
and I am sure that you will indeed attain this
over the duration of your stay.
I appreciate your participation and also
hope that you will learn as much as you can
from the camp to help you grow intellectually, socially and spiritually.

Children in primary schools around the

country will soon receive psychosocial
support resource materials to help them
overcome the trauma they experienced
following Tropical Cyclone Winston earlier this year.
This follows the launch of resource materials by the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Mahendra Reddy.
The materials, mostly books with true
local stories that children can relate to,
were developed by the United Nations
Childrens Fund (UNICEF) in partnership
with the Ministry of Education.
Minister Reddy said the resources will
allow children to learn better because of
reference to objects and materials they
are familiar with.
Some of these materials will be used
by 3-4 year old children who at the moment are at home and not getting appropriate and relevant materials to develop
their thinking ability or a better learning
environment, Minister Reddy said.
The materials will also be distributed
to 1000 early childhood education centers
around Fiji apart from the lower primary
level and UNICEF has agreed to support

the Education Ministry. More than 700 primary schools will be given these resource
materials.
The materials will also be uploaded
on the Ministry of Education website for
those who have access to internet.
We have had discussions with UNICEF about how we can utilize UNICEFs
expertise to develop locally made cartoons for children and we will distribute
them for free to households so young children can watch them at homes, Minister
Reddy said.
Minister Reddy also thanked UNICEF
for providing tents to those schools that
were affected by TC Winston.
UNICEF Pacific Representative, Dr Karen Allen said the initiative was part of their
efforts to further support children affected
by the category 5 cyclone.
About 70 people went around Fiji to
collect these stories and drew wonderful
pictures. The purpose of these stories to
help children who got scared in Cyclone
Winston and who saw their villages damaged. Its to make them feel happy again.
Its also about encouraging children to
read more, Dr Allen said.

Australia offers help

Australia has offered to assist Fiji establish a network of civilian disaster response
teams to improve its ability to deal with
events such as Tropical Cyclone Winston.
The issue was raised at a meeting
when the Attorney General and Minister
for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, gave
a briefing on the cyclone relief effort to
the visiting Australian Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells.
The Senator said Fiji could learn from
the success of the State Emergency Services that had been set up around Australia to deal with natural disasters such as
cyclones and bushfires. And she offered
Australias assistance to provide on the
ground training for Fijians in aspects of
disaster management relevant to local
conditions in Fiji.

The AG outlined some of the challenges Fiji was continuing to face in dealing
with the widespread destruction caused
by Cyclone Winston in February.
He said there was a shortage of steel
and timber to meet the widespread demand for building materials and the Government was working closely with the
private sector to make more available as
quickly as possible.
The AG explained aspects of the Help
for Homes and adopt a School Programs,
which he said were innovative but were
also being hampered by a shortage of
quality construction companies and
tradespeople.
Other issues discussed included climate change and related adaptation and
mitigation and the PACER Plus negotiations.

Family recieves water

for the first time
By LUKE NACEI

WAFs Team Leader NRW Masimino Raga (L) with couple Setareki and Marica Tukana at their
home yesterday. Photo: WAF.

The struggle of making up to nine trips

a day, walking to a water filling point
about 50 meters from their home to fetch
water for drinking, washing, cooking and
bathing has ended for a family in upper
Veisari, outside Lami.
Government, through Water Authority
of Fijis (WAF) successful installation of a
pressure management system in the area,
has fixed the intermittent supply issue
faced by the family for the past 19 years.
The Tukana family first moved to their
leased home in Osonabukete Settlement
when the man of the house, 73-year-old
Setareki Tukana, retired from the Fiji Police Force in 1997. They are now celebrating, receiving the flow of piped water in
the comfort of their home for the first
time.
Ever since we moved here, I knocked
on the right doors for water assistance,

but nothing positive eventuated out of it,

Mr Tukana said.
The then Water Supply Department
officials used to come and just conduct
some pipe adjustment works but the
water pressure always didnt reach my
home.
Sometimes, there was water at the filling point but most of the days, there used
to be no supply at all. I visited WAF, raising
my plight with the authorities there and
am just so grateful that they attended to
it accordingly.
Mr Tukana added that words cannot
describe how thankful they are to the
Government of the day and WAF for assisting them greatly with their water
supply.
All we can say is thank you very much
for the tremendous assistance, he said

Human rights, feminist basis essential

womens movement if
they are to be successful
and sustainable, participants in the regions gender-based violence meeting have heard.
The seventh quadrennial meeting of Pacific Womens Network Violence
Against Women (PWNAVAW) that took place at
the Warwick Resort, Sigatoka, Fiji has been hearing from practitioners in
places like the Papua New
Guinea, Kiribati and Tonga
on the success and failure
of programmes and campaigns to prevent violence
against women and girls.
Experiences
being
shared show that initiatives
that are women-led and
use a human rights-based

framework are more likely

to succeed than those that
do not.
The meeting heard that
while different communities may need to use different approaches to ending
violence against women,
these must be based on
the lived experiences of
women and led by women
to be successful.
I believe if women are
well trained and they have
absorbed the principles of
feminism and womens
human rights we can make
an impact, says Shamima
Ali, the Coordinator of the
Fiji Womens Crisis Centre
(FWCC), which convenes
the quadrennial meeting
of Network members.
She said while womens
human rights workers may
have to adapt their strategies to what is workable
within their own communities, they must stand firm
on feminist principles and
human rights, not com-

promising, not letting go,

not editing ourselves out.
Abigail Erikson, the
eliminating
violence
against women specialist
at UN Women Pacific, who
was also invited to participate, highlighted the risks
of programmes and the
messages they send out
that are imposed by outside agencies who lack an
understanding of the communities they are working
in or by those within the
community who do not
have a thorough understanding of the dynamics
of gender-based violence.
She has witnessed examples in the Pacific of
various groups carrying out
campaigns aimed at ending violence against women and girls, but whose
messages skirt around the
heart of the problem and
at worse excuse mens violent behavior.

Potato farming in Naitasiri

By LUKE NACEI
In an effort to alleviate poverty and
increase food security in rural areas, the
Ministry of Agriculture continues to encourage potato farming in the province of
Naitasiri.
The ministrys senior agriculture officer (Naitasiri), Adriano Tabualevu, it is
the third season of potato planting for the
farmers in the province.
As of this year a total of seven (7) farmers were given potato seeds to plant in
two acres targeted for the province, Mr
Tabualevu said.
Some of the major crops grown in the
area are dalo, kumala and ginger but potato is new to them which is just an additional source of income to their family,
he said.
Meanwhile, a 39-year-old farmer,
Mukesh Deo from Tausa alone planted
one acre of potatoes which is 50 per cent
of the targeted area in Naitasiri.
The soil in Tausa is fertile alluvial soil
and we are optimistic to have a good
yield.
This is the first time for Mukesh to
plant potatoes which will also motivate
other farmers with the high hope to in-

crease the potato production for interested farmers in the province.

Mukesh has been farming in Tausa
for the last 20 years and currently he has
20,000 (2 hectares) dalo sucker on his
farm, one acre of potatoes and he also
plants ginger and kumala, Mr Tabualevu
added.
Mukesh was one of the few suppliers
of kumala cuttings that supplied planting materials during the Tropical Cyclone
Winston rehab period and he is also one
of the few major suppliers of ginger seeds
to the ministry under the 2016 Ginger Development Program and he is going to
supply 30 metric tonnes of ginger before
the end of this month.
Mr Tabualevu said the major problem
faced by the farmers in Tausa is crossing
the river for transporting produce to the
market.

Once
Upon a
Time
A Math Professors Mistake
A college math professor and his wife
are both 60 years old. One evening the
wife comes home and finds a note from
her husband that says, My dear, now
that you are 60 years old, there are some
things you no longer do for me. I am at the
Holiday Inn with my 20-year-old student.
Dont bother waiting up for me.
He returns home late that night to find
a note from his wife: You, my dear, are
also 60 years old and there are also things
I need that youre not giving me. So I am
at the Motel 6 with one of your 20-year-old
students. Being a math professor, Im sure
you know that 20 goes into 60 way more
than 60 goes into 20. So, dont you wait
up for me.
A Lesson In Morals
One day at the end of class, little Johnnys teacher asks the class to go home
and think of a story to be concluded with
the moral of that story. The following day
the teacher asks for the first volunteer to
tell their story.
Little Suzy raises her hand. My dad
owns a farm and every Sunday we load
the chicken eggs on the truck and drive
into town to sell them at the market. Well,
one Sunday we hit a big bump and all the
eggs flew out of the basket and onto the
road.
When the teacher asked for the moral
of the story, Suzy replied, Dont keep all
your eggs in one basket.
Little Lucy went next. My dad owns
a farm too. Every weekend we take the
chicken eggs and put them in the incubator. Last weekend only eight of the 12 eggs
hatched.
Again, the teacher asked for the moral
of the story.
Lucy replied, Dont count your chickens before they hatch.
Next up was little Johnny. My uncle
Ted fought in the Vietnam war, and his

plane was shot down over enemy territory. He jumped out before it crashed but
could only take a case of beer, a machine
gun and a machete. On the way down, he
drank the case of beer. Then he landed
right in the middle of 100 Vietnamese soldiers. He shot 70 with his machine gun,
but then he ran out of bullets! So he pulled
out his machete and killed 20 more. Then
the blade on his machete broke, so he
killed the last ten with his bare hands.
The teacher looked a little shocked.
After clearing her throat, she asked what
possible moral there could be to this story.
Well, Johnny replied, Dont f**k
with Uncle Ted when hes been drinking
A Nun and Her Donkey
A nun wanted to enter a racehorse into
a race, but then she realized that they cost
way too much money, so instead, she
bought a donkey.
The next day, she enters it into a contest, and it comes in third.
The headlines read, Nuns Ass
Chokes.
The next day, she entered it in another
competition and this time it came in first.
The headlines were, Nuns Ass Wins
Grand Prize.
The following day, the owner scratched
the donkey from the race.
The headlines read, Booker Scratches
Nuns Ass.
And on the next day, the nun sold the
donkey for a really cheap price.
The headlines were Nun Sells Her Ass
for $5.
$1 Million in Heaven
Joe asked God, How much is a penny

God replied, $1 million.

God said, One million years.
Joe asked for a penny.
God said, Sure, in a minute.

Fiji host World TVET Day

HE the President Major General (Retd) Jioji Konousi Konrote with the participants of the World TVET Conference in Suva. Photo: DEPTFO.

Technical and vocational education

and training (TVET) will provide the skills,
knowledge and human resources required to develop and sustain our economies in years to come.
This was highlighted by His Excellency
the President Major-General (Retd) Jioji
Konousi Konrote at the opening of the
World TVET Conference in Suva.
More than 300 participants from 30
countries across the world are taking part
in the conference organised by the Fiji
National University (FNU) in partnership
with the International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA).
President Konrote said the Fijian Governments investment in technical col-

leges and institutions would address

shortage of skilled labour in various sectors such as construction, manufacturing,
tourism and agriculture.
I am advised that the demand for
technical and skilled labour force is not
only in Fiji but in the region as well as in
developed countries like Australia, New
Zealand, America and Japan to mention
a few. This demand for skilled workers is
raising demand for training institutions to
provide them, President Konrote said.
One of our strategies is to convert
some of our schools into specialised TVET
centres and to ensure that these centres
are located strategically across the country to cater for both the urban and rural

population.
President Konrote also encouraged the
FNU and other institutions offering technical training, to work with the industry for
attachments so that when students graduate, they are a complete creation ready to
contribute meaningfully to Fijis development.
2016 Fiji IVETA organising committee
chairman, Dr Isimeli Tagicakiverata said
the conference would enable participants
to exchange ideas to further enhance
TVET in their respective institutions.
We have industry experts from all over
the world who will discuss how we can
integrate our programmes with those in
overseas and how we can articulate non-

formal TVET trainings into the secondary

education system and then into tertiary
programmes, Dr Tagicakiverata said.
There are success stories from the Pacific that we would like to share with the
rest of the world and there are good programmes from overseas that we would
like to learn from or adapt to our situations in Fiji and the Pacific.
The theme of the 3-day conference is
Quality, Innovation and skill mobilization in Technical Vocational Education
and Training an internationalization process.

Westpacs New EFTPOS Terminals for

faster transactions
By LUKE NACEI
Westpac Fiji has just launched its new
Verifone VX EFTPOS terminals.
The launch was done at the Rhum-ba
on Denarau Island amidst Westpac executives, staff members and customers.
Westpac Regional Head for South Asia
and the Pacific Greg Pawson, said: The
terminal is built specially to suit the needs
of businesses in Fiji.
It has inbuilt automatic back up communications which greatly limits downtime due to failed communications.
Mr Pawson thanked the issues businesses have faced for a long time at the
point of sale which includes slow processing speeds and dropped connections,
having to carry multiple terminals for multiple card users.
I know many of you have been
plagued by communications failures and

the associates issues so know how much

time and anguish this will save, he said.
When Westpac was looking to upgrade our EFTPOS terminal, we wanted
to find one that would solve all of these
issues and encourage people to transact
by debt or credit card by making it easy
and safe.
This is why we partnered with leading
global manufacturer of point of sale solutions- Verifone Westpacs new EFTPOS
terminal- the Verifone VX is fast and safe.
The new EFTPOS terminals are easy to
use for customers and staff with a large
color touch screen and its completely
mobile.
The EFTPOS terminal can also be
branded to suit businesses with their own
logo or business name on the screen rather than banks.

Rotuma Youths receive

timely boost
By LUKE NACEI
Three youth clubs on the island of Rotuma this week received assistance from
the Ministry of Youth and Sports to boost
their income generating projects.
Pepjei and Losa Youth Clubs each received fishing gear while Juju Youth Club
was handed virgin coconut oil manufacturing equipment, all of which was
requested by the Youth Clubs following

the conclusion of empowerment training

conducted on the island for the three respective individual youth groups.
While handing over the assistance,
Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Laisenia Tuitubou, called on them to manage
and to make full use of the equipment for
the benefit of their youth clubs.

are here to hand it over to you, trusting in

your capabilities to make this assistance
worthwhile, said Minister Tuitubou.
Principal Youth Officer Eastern, George
Francis, stated that these three youth
groups were active on Rotuma and that it
was timely for the assistance to be given.
These Youth Clubs have been sending
in monthly reports consistently and are
engaged in their community as they had
also sent in their proposals on how to run
their income generating projects, which is
why this assistance could not have been
more timely as they have undergone the
necessary training with the Ministry, said
Mr Francis.
Losa Youth Club president, Kia Tigarea,
acknowledged the assistance and pres-

ence of the visiting delegation led by the

two Honourable Ministers of Youth and
Sports and Fisheries and Forests as it assured remotely based youths and communities of Governments rural and maritime development agenda.
I am deeply humbled to receive this
assistance in the presence of the Honourable Ministers and I acknowledge the
dedication shown through this donation
towards us as the young people of Rotuma, said Kia.
A series of mobile skills and empowerment training was held earlier this year
in March in the districts of Pepjei/Juju and

see the amount of interest shown by our
young people with todays handing over
of the license, said Pastor Taito.

Club said that the program was well received by his peers and that they would
aim to reap its benefits to the full in becoming future leaders of the island.

Leveraging the Rugby

7s Gold in Rio
Fijis gold medal exploits on the rugby
field at the Rio Summer Olympics has
given the country global media attention
which Tourism Fiji and Fiji Airways are
capitalising on.
The Ministry of Industry, Trade and
Tourism is supporting Tourism Fiji and
Fiji Airways to leverage the opportunity
through tactical marketing activities, social media channels and public relations
activities.
Hon. Minister Faiyaz Koya says the
happiest place on the planet, Fiji, has
become happier after the success of the
Fiji Mens Rugby Sevens team.
The Olympic gold has made a huge
impact in terms of putting our destination
in front of a global audience in both our
traditional and non-traditional markets.
Fiji became the number one trending topic on Twitter for several hours following
the game, while Fiji became the most
searched term on Google at the same
time.
On Twitter, the #Fiji hashtag reached
more than 283 million people and generated more than 332 million impressions,
while the traffic to our website, www.fiji.
travel, saw a big spike from 12-15 August
he added.
Figures gathered from Tourism Fijis
social channels from 12-15 August reveal
that engagement with fans was at an alltime high as a result of the win and Tourism Fijis social media activities. Tourism
Fijis Facebook daily average reach over
the four days was well over 175,000 fans.

Fiji Airways Managing Director and

CEO, Mr Andre Viljoen commented: Fijians love rugby and are very proud of their
rugby team most especially at this historic
time; and as Fijis National Airline, were
also very passionate about the sport.
Through well-thought and timed activations across our channels, we were able
to make best use of the hype surrounding
the teams success.
The Pride Campaign, made up of photos and videos that interplay airline and
rugby imagery and words, calls on the
sentiments of fervent pride that every Fijian felt after this win. As an airline made up
of Fijians who are zealous rugby fans, we
are only too familiar with these emotions.
A simple social media post announcing that we were serving Fiji Gold beer
exclusively straight after the team won
received thousands of organic reactions
and engagement. We also turned our
website gold in celebration. Of course,
we know this is also an opportune time to
showcase Fiji, and as a celebratory sale,
we have released Fijis Gone Coconuts
fares across our different markets with
discounts up to 49% off. These are available only for a limited time, so we urge
people to visit www.fijiairways.com to secure their tickets at these prices.

New departures check-in

terminal being tested
New departures check-in terminal being tested
The progress of the Nadi Airport Terminal Modernisation Project (NATMP) has
taken a huge stride with the opening of
a portion of the brand new Departures
check-in terminal for live testing.
Airports Fiji Limited Executive Chairman Faiz Khan said passengers travelling
to Auckland and Christchurch early this
morning were processed in the new Departures check-in terminal.
AFL commenced live testing of part of
your brand new departures check-in terminal. Passengers of two flights were successfully checked-in this morning. More
tests are planned over the next few days
before AFL completely transitions from
the old to the new check-in terminal, Mr
Khan explained.
Once we completely transition to your
new terminal in a weeks time, farewellers will also be allowed in to experience
the terminal for themselves. We thank all

Fijians for their patience over the last year

when farewellers were restricted from
entering the departures check-in terminal to allow construction works to take
place, elaborated Khan.
The release of part of your new checkin terminal is a staged approach to the
NATMP. Construction works in other areas are ongoing.
In line with the Governments vision
for a better Fiji the opening of part of the
brand new check-in terminal is another
milestone for AFL and all Fijians. We
hope you enjoy this new experience, expressed Khan.
To see the excitement in our passengers as they walked into the new terminal
this morning defines what this project is
all about.
Mr Khan thanked the contractors, consultants, airport stakeholders and AFL
staff for great team work in contributing
in whatever big or small, direct or indirect
way, to delivering yet another milestone.

Kauvesi Applauds Support

PM lauds Ryan for
inspirational leadership
By LUKE NACEI

By LUKE NACEI
The Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has thanked the Rugby Sevens Rio
Olympics Gold medal winning Coach Ben
Ryan for his inspirational leadership and
dedication that brought to their victory.
Ben, thank you for your inspirational
leadership and the dedication and discipline you brought to this victory, for the
way you moulded these talented men
into a world class fighting force, for believing in them, for believing in victory and for
believing in Fiji, Bainimarama said.
The fact that so many Fijians have
named their children after you shows the
huge place you occupy in our hearts. We
thank you for showing us a path to victory
and leading us there.
I think you already know, Ben, that you
may go on to bigger things but they wont
necessarily be better things. Because you
will never be more fondly regarded, never
more loved, than you are in Fiji, he said.
In the world of rugby, the big money
certainly isnt here in Fiji. But the biggest
hearts definitely are. And every Fijian joins
me in saying vinaka vakalevu. Wherever
the future takes you, the very best wishes
of all of us will always go with you and
your family.
Bainimarama also thanked the captain

Osea Kolinisau together with the players.

Osea and the rest of the boys: I cannot
tell you how much it meant for Mary and
I to sit in the stands in Rio beside our fellow Fijians and witness at first hand your
magic on the field.
I have never seen Sevens rugby
played so well. And I know that the thrill
and the pride I felt were shared by every
Fijian watching at home. A surge of joy
that spilled onto the streets and brought
us together as a nation in a unique and
very special way.
So we also thank you for the example
you set for young people everywhere. And
also for showing us that no matter how
important individual effort is, it is teamwork that ultimately counts the most.
In this case, our Sevens Rugby team
setting a standard for all of us to emulate
every single citizen as members of Team
Fiji. One nation. One people. Working together with our eyes on the future, with
our eyes set on achieving greatness, he
said.
I want to say to the many young people who are here today the future of our
nation, you are all very lucky to be growing up in truly a golden age for Fiji.

The Gold medal winning Fiji sevens

team manager Ropate Kauvesi is forever
thankful to all the Fijians that have been
supporting the Fijian Team.
Kuavesi who came in to country after
the teams arrival said the prayers and the
support of the nation was a morale boost
for them back in Rio.
We are thankful to them for making it
happen and we are proud that we have
achieved what we wanted to achieve and
we thank everyone that is being involved
and most of all we thank our father in
heaven for helping us, Kauvesi said.
Most of the blessing we have been
seeking, everyone has their own fall
but at the end of the day we are pretty
blessed. We are quiet surprise we were
not expecting this from the fans but to see
the crowds here just brought tears to my

eyes and it has been emotional having

them to come and meet the boys.
Looking at Ben team we didnt get
there by chance everyone has put it the
hard yards. It is hard to break but we will
have a break and then will work from
there. To be honest we were very emotional and very teary seeing them getting
the highest accolade from the country.
I just want to thank every member of
the team and not only them, special message to their families and their loved ones
for supporting them. A big vinaka vakalevu and a big thank you to all you families from the bottom of our hearts.
Kauvesi said he is really not aware
with his next move.
I am not really sure of what next for
me, I just want to spend time with my
family.

Olympians bring golden

touch to Fiji International
The Fiji International will have a golden
touch this year with Osea Kolinisau and
Masivesi Dakuwaqa Gold Medalists in
the Rio 2016 Olympics, and Vodafone Fiji
7s player Emosi Mulevoro signing on as
Ambassadors for the tournament.
The Vodafone Fiji 7s made history this
year winning Fijis first Olympic medal.
Their gold medal win was celebrated
around the world, drawing attention to
Fijis sporting prowess.
The Fiji International, to be played from
6-9 October at Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course, also places Fiji firmly
in the eyes of the world; showcasing the
beauty of the country as a golfing mecca.
Aligning together the Fiji International
and Vodafone Fiji Rugby 7s will strengthen this message.
The involvement of our world renowned sevens heroes will be a boost
to this years Fiji International event. We
anticipate a huge turnout from our locals
to come and watch the Fiji international
event while at the same time enjoy a moment with our rugby stars, said the Hon.
Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism,
Mr. Faiyaz Koya.
This is the second year that the Vodafone Rugby 7s have been Ambassadors
for their countrys largest sporting event;
the Fiji International.
We had a great time at the Fiji International last year. We always appreciate
watching the most talented athletes excel
at their sport and seeing Vijay Singh in action last year was very exciting, said Kolinisau.
We cant wait to come back this year
as Olympic Gold Medalists and celebrate
this special achievement with Fijian sports
fans at the Fiji International.
John Masi OConnor, CEO of the Fiji
Rugby Union also commented, The
partnership between the Fiji Ruby Union
(FRU) and the Fiji International is a continuation of the successful partnership

formed last year.

The FRU is pleased to be able to support the Fiji Governments initiative to utilise the Fiji International and the boys win
in Rio as a platform to promote Fiji around
the world.
The Fiji International is about more
than just a professional golf tournament.
The tournament aims to increase golf participation in Fiji and the involvement of
the Vodafone Fiji Rugby 7s is one initiative helping to achieve this.
Emosi and I took up playing golf last
year as a hobby and we are really enjoying it, added Kolinisau.
It would be great to see more Fijians
playing golf. We have won a gold medal
in the Rugby 7s and golf was a new sport
in the Olympics this year too. It would
be wonderful to see Fiji win an Olympic
medal for golf one day.
The Fiji International is delighted to be
able to share in the gold medal celebrations with the Vodafone Fiji Rugby 7s.
Fiji winning a gold medal in the Rugby
7s was one of the most memorable moments of the Rio Olympics, said Brian
Thorburn, CEO of the PGA of Australia.
We are honoured to have Osea Kolinisau and Masivesi Dakuwaqa Gold Medalists in the Rio 2016 Olympics together
with Vodafone Fiji 7s player Emosi Mulevoro as Ambassadors for the Fiji International. Their participation will confirm the
Fiji International as an integral sporting
event on the Fijian calendar, where golf is
still an emerging sport.
As Ambassadors of the Fiji International, they will attend the Welcome Dinner
on Tuesday 4 October and will enjoy the
tournament in the unique corporate hospitality. They will also conduct daily fan
meet and greets and sign autographs.

World Champions in International Sevens
Rugby, Mr Konrote said.
As your new Chief Scout, I am deeply
honored to join you today and to officiate
in the opening of the 9th Fiji National Cub

By LUKE NACEI

The Fiji International will once again

have a relaxed atmosphere thanks to the
continued partnership with Essence of

able to contribute a lot more to the participants of the Golf tournament.
As a company they will be providing

QVS Stronger
than Winston
By LUKE NACEI
The massive destruction by Tropical Cyclone Winston on Queen Victoria
School (QVS) earlier this year has boosted
the students in the school.
This was witnessed when five of their
grades played in the Coca Cola Deans Trophy finals competition.
The Vulinitu based school managed to
secure four titles of the five after their grueling attacks to the top schools.
QVS under 18 coach Senirusi Seruvakula after their 21-18 victory over Marist said
that the deans competition has reunited
the whole QVS fraternity.
This really means a lot when there is
no school but still we stood up from the
Under 14, 15, 17, and 18 grades. It has
brought us together with the old boys and
the students together with the QVS family and we have showed that it doesnt
matter if Winston has taken our school. It
makes us stronger than Winston, Seruvakula said.
The side was without the deans trophy
for four solid years.
I feel so great for the boys win. It has
been four years now we havent won the
deans, we prepared well and we played
a better opposition today. Marist firing up
from the start, and they played a very con-

structive rugby, he said.

Not only for QVS, the other two eastern zone based school RKS and Lelean
Memorial School scooped titles for their
school and as well their zone.
Eastern Zone president Mesake Tukai
said they were confident in winning the
Deans title this year thus making some big
upsets.
In our last executive meeting with the
Fiji Secondary School Rugby Union and
the other officials I told them that Eastern
Zone has come to retain all the trophies
and we are going to give it to the west and
the Southern teams, Tukai said.
The furry and the ferocity of Winston the Eastern Zone schools is going
to come back and defend it and I like to
thank the coaches and the management
of RKS, Lelean and QVS for defending the
trophies for all the grades.
MBHS coach Koroi Matadigo said they
had learnt a lot after the game.
It was a game of both half s and the
boys from QVS has taken their chances,
we had equal opportunities but we congratulate the QVS team. I am really proud
of what the boys have done today, he
said.

Ryan reminisces their victorious Rio Campaign

By LUKE NACEI
The Rugby Sevens Rio Olympics Gold medal winning coach
Ben Ryan was confident that
his sevens boys were going to
make the nation proud by winning the gold medal in Rio.
Reminiscing their victorious
campaign, Ryan said he realized they were going to win the
final when he saw the confidence the players had.
And that moment when
they run out, I realized why
were going to win that final, because that wasnt seven players
running out and it wasnt the
whole population behind them,
the pressure wasnt on their
shoulders, the boys were on the
shoulders of every Fijian on this
island, Ryan said.
I was not expecting to say
anything. You saw the final and
saw what happened but I want
to tell you about the warm up.
Outside the changing room
is the warm area and we had a
area on the left and Great Brit-

ain had an area on the right,

and Great Britain were in our
area they like to invade places
and they took our side and we
did not complain and we went
out there with Chris, William,
Ropate and Naca and I watched
them put one cone, two cones,
until they got to over 40 cones,
they had eight coaches and
managers with.
Then they got their tackle
shields out, they had a lot of
whistling blowing and then
they ran out very regimented
and I watched the play and I
watched them do the warm up,
he said.
Ryan said it was the opposite
for our Fijian boys.
And behind me I could hear
some laughing. In our changing room, our boys were dancing, it was the biggest game in
the history of rugby 7s, a game
watched by millions of people
around the world.
We didnt have any cones,

The Fiji Chess Festival concluded successfully at the Radisson Blu Resort after a
week of standard, rapid and blitz games.
The weeklong carnival saw participants
from Australia, New Zealand, France and
Fiji compete in three chess tournaments.
The Fiji National Sports Commission
(FSNC) sponsored event was won by International Master (IM) Gary Lane of Australiain the 2nd Fiji International Chess
Championships by winning all 7 games,
reported International Arbiter (IA) Dr
Jashint Maharaj. The Lane supremacy
also continued in Rapid where he scored
9/9.
However, New Zealander Jack James
broke the winning streak of the top seed
when he outplayed him in a close encounter in the Blitz event.
We also had very exciting and strong
performances by top local players, Deputy Arbiter Gaurav Raicar said.
14 year old Semesi Vukikomoala was
the pick of the lot since he won the Best
Local Player Award in Standard event,
and it was his first appearance in an international event.Raicar added that Semisi

the chess future.
Fijis top seed CM Calvin Prasad impressed in Standard by amassing 5/7
to finish second overall next to IM Gary
Lane. In the Blitz event, CM Paul Spiller
of New Zealand won the Senior Division
while CM Manoj Kumar won the Best Local Award.
Team Fiji showed true grit in their
games against much stronger and experienced opponents, and it was greatly
pleasing to watch the young and upcoming chess enthusiasts upset senior international players, Raicar said.
The Chess Festival also incorporated
the 2016 Oceania Seniors and inaugural
Oceania Juniors titles which were awarded to IM Gary Lane of Australia and Jack
James of New Zealand respectively for
their efforts during the week.
A total of $ 7500 in cash prizes was distributed among 45 winners in categories

Meanwhile there are still a few logistics that is needed to

be conducted before any confirmation on his next stint is confirmed.

Ryan was at the Tagimoucia Art Gallery
in Korovou, Suva to meet Naceno and receive the gift.
Naceno said he had been inspired to
paint a portrait of the 7s coach as a buildup to the Rio Olympics.
I began working on the painting in
June. When I started working on the painting, I knew Fiji would come back with
gold. We watched the Olympics throughout the week of the event on television so
we were fortunate to have watched all of
Fijis 7s matches.
When our 7s team won, it boosted
my morale and fuelled my desire to finish the painting. I really wanted to gift it
to Mr Ben Ryan and I still cannot believe
that he made time to come here today so
I can present it to him, said an ecstatic
Naceno.
Naceno also acknowledged Feroz
Khalil as the photographer of the picture
which he used as a guide for the portrait.
I received a copy of the MaiLife magazine in June and Mr Ben Ryans picture was on the cover so I used that as a
