If youre a bass player who loves those classic
synth bass lines but never wanted to learn to use
a keyboard, the DEEP IMPACT SB1 is just what
youve been waiting for: your favorite synth bass
sounds at the tips of your fingers. With 9 programmable presets to choose from, you can just
plug and play or shape the sounds to suit you.
With the true/clean bypass mode, when you turn
the effect off, there is no coloration of the sound from the input.

PROTECTING YOURSELF AND THE SB1 DEEP IMPACT

Never touch the AC Adaptor with wet hands.

Always disconnect the AC Adaptor from the power supply by pulling on the adaptor/plug, not the
cord.
Allow only an AKAI professional dealer or qualified professional engineer to repair or reassemble
the SB1 DEEP IMPACT. Apart from voiding the warranty, unauthorized engineers might touch live
internal parts and receive a serious electrical shock.
Do not put, or allow anyone to put any object, especially metal objects, into the SB1 DEEP IMPACT.
Use only a household AC power supply. Never use a DC power supply.
If water or any other liquid is spilled into or onto the SB1 DEEP IMPACT, disconnect the power, and
call your dealer.
Make sure that the unit is well-ventilated, and away from direct sunlight.
To avoid damage to internal circuitry, as well as the external finish, keep the SB1 DEEP IMPACT

OUTPUT LEVEL control

This sets the output level (volume) of the effect.

Operation:
1.

Connect your bass to the INPUT jack.

PARAMETER selector
To select the parameters that you want to edit.

2.

Connect the OUTPUT jack to your amps INPUT jack or to the input of another
effect unit.

INPUT LEVEL control

This sets the input signal level.
Set it so that the red LED (OVER) doesn't light even when playing at your loudest.

3.

Turn your system on.

4.

Press the ON/OFF (right) footswitch to turn the effect on (the LED (red) will light).

5.

Adjust the INPUT LEVEL and OUTPUT LEVEL while playing the bass. The input
level should be adjusted so as the red LED of Level meter does not come on when
playing at your loudest. However, since the pitch cannot be determined properly if
the level is too low, the level should be adjusted as high as possible without turning
on the red LED (see Important note below for more detailed information).

Level meter: The LEDs show the following levels for the input signal:
Red - overload, level is too high / Yellow - correct level / Green - signal is too low
Note: It is important that the correct level (yellow) is set: If the level is too high, the
sound will be distorted. If the level is too low, the pitch will not be detected correctly
and the effect will not work properly.

PROG. NO display
Displays the program number.

DATA display
Displays the data value of the currently selected parameter.

DATA control
Turn this dial to adjust the parameters data value (select the parameter with the
PARAMETER selector).

Lights when the effect is turned on.

PROGRAM UP footswitch
Switches through the 9 programs.
The programs are selected from 1 through 9 and back to 1, you cannot select
lower program numbers (from 8 to 7 for example) unless a separately sold pedal
is connected to the PROGRAM DOWN input.

ON/OFF footswitch
Switches the effect on and off. Also used as an enter button after a program has
been selected with the PROGRAM UP switch.

Note: When the effect is turned off, the level display will not light. This is because
the SB1 is a true bypass and does not color the original sound of your bass when
turned off.

Select a program with the PROGRAM UP (left) footswitch.

The number will flash but the sound will not change. This is so that you can go
directly to a program without having to hear the other effects in between.

7.

Press the ON/OFF switch to enable the selected effect (the number will stop
flashing).

Important notes:

The SB1 performs the pitch detection of incoming signal. Depending on your
playing style, e.g., chord play, chopping, extremely fast passage, stc., the
pitch may be detected incorrectly and the effect sound may not sound at the
correct pitch.
The SB1 is designed for bass. It can only handle the input signal of frequency
range between 30Hz and 470Hz (equivalent to the open 6th string note to
23rd fret of 1st string of a 6-string bass). If the incoming signal is outside this
range, it cannot detect the pitch correctly and so the synth sound (effect
sound) will be out of tune.

Editing the Sounds

You can edit the characteristics of each of the 9 programs and you should experiment
with the different parameters to see if there is a sound that better suits your musical
ideas. Each parameter is correlated with other parameters. If altering one parameter
doesnt change the sound much, try altering the other parameters as well. The programs
can be returned to the factory presets very easily (see step 3 below), so you dont have
to worry about losing the sounds that are already programmed.

Select a program, as shown in steps 6 and 7 above.

2.

Turn the PARAMETER selector to the parameter that you want to edit (see next
PARAMETERS).

3.

Adjust the parameter data value from 1 to 9 with the DATA control (the factory
preset is 5 for all parameters, except for PRESET, allowing you to set the offset of
+/- 4).

4.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have adjusted the parameters for that program.
When you have finished, the parameters are memorized automatically and you
can then go on to select another program number.

PARAMETERS
NOTE OFF LEVEL:

Sets the sensitivity for triggering the end of the effect. Too high a
setting may cut off the effect sound early and too low a setting
may make the separate notes indistinguishable.
This is a global parameter, which means that if you change this
level in one program, all the other programs are changed too.

NOTE ON LEVEL:

Sets the sensitivity for triggering the start of the effect. Too high
a setting may not trigger the effect sound and too low a setting
may trigger the sound by merely touching the strings.
This is a global parameter, which means that if you change this
level in one program, all the other programs are changed too.

PRESET:

Sets the preset sound for the program (Preset 1 to 9 are assigned
to Proram 1 to 9 respectively as factory default).
Example: instead of program 1 playing preset 1, you could
change it so that program 1 plays preset 7, etc.

ATTACK:

Sets how fast the effect sound sounds. If the change in sound is
not apparent, try setting the ENVELOPE DEPTH higher and/or
DYNAMICS lower.

DECAY:

Sets how fast the effect sound diminishes. If the change in sound
is not apparent, try setting the ENVELOPE DEPTH higher and/
or DYNAMICS lower.

ENVELOPE DEPTH:

Sets the amout of changes the effect sound makes. If the change
in sound is not apparent, try setting the DYNAMICS lower.

Sets the sensitivity of the tone variation dependant on how hard

or soft you hit a string. If the change in sound is not apparent, try
setting the ENVELOPE DEPTH lower.

CUTOFF:

Adjusts the brightness of the effect sound.

RESONANCE:

BALANCE:

mtre Niveau ne se montre pas lorsque la lecture est au plus fort. Cependant,
parce que la hauteur ne peut pas tre adquatement dtermine si le niveau est
trop bas, le niveau devrait tre ajust aussi haut que possible sans allumer
lindicateur rouge (voir Remarques importantes ci-dessous pour une information
plus dtaille).

Mtre de niveau: Les indicateurs montrent les niveaux suivants pour le signal
dentre:
Rouge surcharg, le niveau est trop haut / Jaune niveau adquat / Vert le
signal est trop faible
Remarque: Il est important que le niveau adquat (jaune) soit rgl: Si le niveau
est trop haut, le son sera dform. Si le niveau est trop bas, la hauteur ne sera pas
dtecte correctement et leffet ne fonctionnera pas convenablement.

exprimenter avec les diffrents paramtres pour voir sil y a un son qui correspond le
mieux vos ides musicales. Chaque paramtre est corrl avec dautres paramtres.
Si laltration dun paramtre ne modifie pas beaucoup le son, essayez daltrer aussi
les autres paramtres. Les programmes peuvent tre ramens aux prrglages dusine
trs facilement (voir ltape 3 ci-dessous), alors vous navez pas craindre de perdre les
sons qui sont dj programms.

Remarques importantes:
Le SB1 applique la dtection de hauteur dun signal en entre. En fonction de
votre faon de jouer, e.g., jeu de cordes, jeu coupant, passage extrmement
rapide, etc., la hauteur peut tre dtecte incorrectement et leffet de son peut
ne pas sonner une hauteur adquate.
Le SB1 est conu pour la basse. Il peut seulement supporter un signal dentre
dun intervalle de frquence entre 30Hz et 470Hz (quivalant la note ouverte
de la 6e corde jusqu celle trouve sur la 23e touche de la 6e corde dune
basse). Si le signal dentre est en dehors de cet intervalle, il ne peut pas dtecter
la hauteur correctement et alors le son synthtis (effet de son) jouera faux.

ist dieser DEEP IMPACT SB1 genau das, worauf
Sie gewartet haben: Ihre bevorzugten
synthetischen Bsse erklingen durch bloes
Antippen mit dem Finger. Mit 9 verfgbaren
programmierbaren Voreinstellungen ist sowohl
das Plug & Play als auch das Anpassen des
Klanges an Ihren persnlichen Geschmack

Mit dem echten/sauberen Bypass-Modus tritt beim Ausschalten des Effektes keine
Klangverfrbung vom Eingang aus auf.

Versprhen Sie keine Sprays (Insektenvertilgungsmittel u.dgl.) in der der Nhe des SB1 DEEP
IMPACT, da solche Chemikalien die Gehuseoberflche angreifen und sich entznden knnen.
Verwenden Sie zum Reinigen des SB1 DEEP IMPACT keinen denaturierten Alkohol, Verdnner
oder hnliche Mittel, da solche Chemikalien die Gehuseoberflche angreifen.
Eine Modifikation des SB1 DEEP IMPACT ist gefhrlich und kann das Gert beschdigen und
unbrauchbar machen. Sehen Sie daher unbedingt von eigenmchtigen Eingriffen ab!
Achten Sie darauf, da der SB1 DEEP IMPACT beim Betrieb auf einer festen, ebenen Flche steht.
Um optimale Betriebsvoraussetzungen zu schaffen, sollten Sie den Aufstellort fr Ihren SB1 DEEP
IMPACT sorgfltig whlen und auf ordnungsgeme Handhabung achten. Vermeiden Sie eine
Aufstellung des SB1 DEEP IMPACT:
1. an feuchten und staubigen Orten.
2. in schlecht belfteten Rumen.
3. auf geneigten Stellflchen.
4. an Orten, wo das Gert starken Erschtterungen ausgesetzt ist (z.B. in einem Fahrzeug).

Fr einen einwandfreien Betrieb sicherstellen, da einige Sekunden gewartet wird, bevor das

Wenn Sie dieses Gert an eine andere Anlage anschlieen, vergewissern Sie sich, da die

leuchtet.

Drcken Sie den ON/OFF-Fuchalter (rechts), um den Effekt einzuschalten (das

LED (rot) leuchtet).

Stellen Sie die INPUT LEVEL und OUTPUT LEVEL whrend der Wiedergabe der
Bsse ein. Der Eingangspegel sollte so eingestellt werden, dass das rote LED des
Pegelmessers auch bei der Wiedergabe mit Hchstlautstrke nicht aufleuchtet.
Dennoch, da die Erkennung der Tonhhe bei zu niedrig eingestelltem Pegel nicht
einwandfrei mglich ist, sollte der Pegel schon so hoch wie mglich ohne dass
jedoch das rote LED aufleuchtet eingestellt werden (Einzelheiten hierzu
entnehmen Sie bitte dem nachfolgenden Abschnitt Wichtige Hinweise).

werden, wenn das als Zubehr erhltliche Pedal an den PROGRAM DOWNEingang angeschlossen ist.

Schaltet den Effekt ein und aus. Dient auch als Eingabe-Taste, nachdem mit dem
PROGRAM UP-Schalter ein Programm angewhlt worden ist.

Editieren der Klnge
Sie knnen die Eigenschaften jedes einzelnen der 9 Programme editieren und Sie sollten
mit den verschiedenen Parametern experimentieren, um festzustellen, ob der eine oder
andere Klang mglicherweise besser zu Ihren musikalischen Ideen passt. Jeder einzelne
Parameter bezieht sich auf andere Parameter. Wenn die nderung eines Parameters
keine deutliche Klangnderung zur Folge hat, sollten Sie versuchen, auch die anderen
Parameter zu verndern. Die werkseitige Einstellung der Programme ist problemlos
mglich (siehe nachfolgend aufgefhrten Schritt 3), so dass Sie nicht befrchten mssen,
dass bereits programmierte Klnge verlorengehen.
1.

Whlen Sie ein Programm wie in den oben beschriebenen Schritten 6 und 7
aus.

2.

Drehen Sie den PARAMETER-Whler auf den Parameter, den Sie editieren
mchten (siehe nchstes Kapitel PARAMETER).

3.

Stellen Sie den Parameterwert mit dem DATA-Regler auf einen Wert zwischen 1
und 9 ein (werkseitig wurden alle Parameterwerte auf 5 eingestellt mit Ausnahme
von PRESET, was Ihnen die Einstellung von +/- 4 des Offsets ermglicht).

4.

Wiederholen Sie die Schritte 2 und 3 bis Sie alle Parameter fr das entsprechende
Programm eingestellt haben.
Nach Beendigung werden die Parameter automatisch gespeichert und Sie knnen
die nchste Programmnummer anwhlen.

Hinweis: Bei ausgeschaltetem Effekt leuchtet das Pegel-Display nicht. Grund dafr
ist, dass es sich bei dem SB1 um einen echten Bypass handelt, der den Originalton
beim Ausschalten Ihres Basses nicht verfrbt.
6.

Whlen Sie mit dem PROGRAM UP-Fuchalter (links) ein Programm aus.
Die Nummer blinkt, aber der Ton ndert sich nicht. Dadurch knnen Sie ein
Programm direkt anwhlen, ohne sich zwischenzeitlich die anderen Effekte anhren
zu mssen.

7.

Drcken Sie zum Aktivieren des angewhlten Effektes den ON/OFF-Schalter (die
Nummer hrt auf zu blinken).

Wichtige Hinweise:
Der SB1 fhrt die Tonhhen-Erkennung des eingehenden Signals aus. Abhngig
von Ihrem Spielstil wie z.B. Akkorde, Wechsel, extrem schnelle Passagen usw.,
wird die Tonhhe mglicherweise nicht richtig erkannt und der Effektklang ertnt
nicht in der richtigen Tonhhe.
Der SB1 wurde fr Bsse konstruiert. Er kann nur das Eingangssignal des
Frequenzbereiches zwischen 30 Hz und 470 Hz bearbeiten (entsprechend der
offenen 6. Seite bis zum 23. Griff der 1. Seite eines 6-Seiten-Basses. Wenn das
Eingangssignal auerhalb dieses Bereiches liegt, ist keine ordnungsgeme
Erkennung der Tonhhe mglich und somit ist der synthetische Klang
(Effektklang) nicht einstellbar.

nderung des Klanges nur unwesentlich ist, sollten Sie
versuchen, die ENVELOPE DEPTH hher und/oder die
DYNAMICS niedriger einzustellen.

ENVELOPE DEPTH:

Stellt die Menge ein, um die sich der Effektklang verndert.

Wenn die nderung des Klanges nur unwesentlich ist, sollten
Sie versuchen, die DYNAMICS niedriger einzustellen.

DYNAMICS:

Stellt die Empfindlichkeit der Klangvariationen ein. Dies

Stellt die Loudness von jedem einzelnen Programm ein.
