SWOT Analysis Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats

Strengths
S1 We have developed a strong storyline that appeals to both young and older
viewers.
S2 Our narrative depicts a protagonist suffering with a mental illness, therefore
we provide a deeper insight into the lives of those with a mental illness to our
target audience.
S3 We have prior experience from AS Media Studies as well as creative minds
to be able to execute our production successfully.
S4 In terms of expenses, our budget will be fairly low, as Replica will not require
a lot of money to produce. This is particularly because the school provides the
equipment and we do not have to cover hiring costs.
S5 Our cast members can act to a high standard allowing our production to look
more believable/realistic.
S6 Our group members are aware of each others strengths and weaknesses,
which will help us to achieve the best possible outcome.
S7 The short film can be approximately 5 minutes long allowing us to be more
creative with our ideas and perhaps develop them more.
S8 All filming locations are relatively local or easily accessible.

Weaknesses
W1 Although we have developed a strong storyline, it may be challenging to
complete the 5 minute short film within the time scale given.
W2 Our narrative deals with serious issues such as suicide and mental illness.
We need to remember that certain viewers may be sensitive to particular issues
and take this into consideration.
W3 Replica contains more than one actor, this means it may be difficult to
organise days to film where everybody is available.
W4 We are approaching winter when it becomes dark quicker in the evenings
and some of our scenes take place outside.
W5 Each group member needs to have good time management in order to
execute our production to a high standard. This is difficult when we may have
other work to tend to.

Opportunities
O1 We have been provided with use of the wide range of equipment at school
which is convenient for us all and beneficial financially. For example, we have
access to a recording studio where voiceovers could be recorded if necessary. If
we were a small, independent film company outside of school then we would have

to pay extortionate costs for the equipment we are provided with for free.
O2 Our group members are in contact with people who can act, either as a
hobby or because they are A Level Drama students. This means that it is likely for
us to find a substitute actor if one of our actors can no longer take part in our
production.
O3 We have access to a good quality editing software on the Apple iMacs called
Final Cut Pro X. This software allows us to be extremely creative in the editing
process.
O4 A green screen is available which could be useful whilst making our film
posters.
O5 The media technician and teacher have years of experience in relation to
filming and can provide good support/advice if needed.

Threats
T1 Our actors are all A Level students and are therefore very busy with other
subjects. This is a threat because we have a tight time scale to finish our
production and will need their presence every time we film.
T2 - There are many other people that will be using the equipment too meaning
that it may not be available when we need it. In order to overcome this potential
threat, we need to book the equipment in advance.
