1. Turkey Diet: A woman is on a diet and goes into a shop to buy some turkey
slices. She is given 3 slices which together weigh 1/3 of a pound, but her
diet says that she is only allowed to eat 1/4 of a pound per day. How much
of the three slices that she bought can she eat today while staying true to
her diet?
2. Repair Job: Sam is helping his brother Jason do carpentry and general
repair jobs. Jason gave Sam some money for supplies. Sam bought some
tools for $20.80, then spent one half of what was left for wood. He spent one
third of what was left after that on paint and one third on buckets and
brushes, and he returned with $13.20. How much money did Jason give
Sam?
3. Lottery Winnings: When her mother won a lottery ticket, Kayla was given

5. Egyptian Fractions: Egyptian fractions were typically written in terms of
unit fractions, that is, fractions with a numerator of 1. With the exception of
a few common, simple fractions like 2/3, non-unit fractions were
decomposed into sums of distinct unit fractions.

Ice Cap Crunchers as Cruisers; one-half as many Rocket Rollers as
Crunchers; and 2 Rotating Ribbits for every 4 Crawlers. If in one year Q4T4
produced 252 Ice Cap Crunchers, how many vehicles did they make
altogether?
7. Jellybean Profit: Megan buys jellybeans at 5 for 3 cents, and sells them at
6 for 5 cents. How many must she sell in order to make a profit of $3.50?

Dessert Problem Choices After completing one main course
menu project, choose a dessert problem to solve. If correctly
solved, and presented with one of the project choices above, you
can earn 5 challenge points or an Einstein!

1. Lukes Rat: Luke wanted to weigh his pet rat on a balance. He balanced
his rat with weights of 1/8 pound, 1/4 pound, and 1/2 pound. How many
ounces does Lukes pet rat weigh?
2. Generous Jan: Jan gave away 1/2 of her money on Monday. She then gave
away 1/3 of what was left on Tuesday. On Wednesday, she spent 1/4 of her
remaining money. What fraction of her original money does she have left?
3. Changed Recipe: While Eric was making some cookies, he put 5 cups of
flour into the mixing bowl instead of the 4 cups the recipe called for. Now he
has to change the other amounts in the recipe. What are the new amounts
of sugar and oats that Eric must use?
Original Recipe: 4 c flour, 1 c sugar, 2 c oats
Changed Recipe: 5 c flour, ? c sugar, ? c oats
4. Canoe Trip Crackers: Christine has two boxes of crackers that she will

share evenly with six friends during a 7-day canoe trip (Seven people
altogether). What fraction of a box will each person eat per day?
