Air Pollution in Delhi

The air pollution in Delhi has raised

concerns regarding health issues, in
particular with the children living there.
Comparisons have been made between
New Delhi and Beijing, China, which has
long been regarded as the most polluted
city. However, many experts are now saying
that New Delhi is making China's polluted
cities look clean in comparison.
Air pollution is the fifth biggest threat to
people's lives in India. It is responsible for
over 600,000 premature deaths, which is
six times as many as in the year 2000.
Despite these issues, there are many
observers who believe that the problem is
still not being addressed properly. The
problem is seen as an inconvenience, but
also simply as an everyday life problem.
Major awareness of the issue has not been
raised, and a plan of action or pollution
level warnings have not officially been put
in place.

Bikes: The Solution?

A campaign highlights how India's public

transport system has been neglected
because of a car-centric approach in its
infrastructure. The month-long initiative
aims to get locals to think of the ecofriendly alternatives such as walking or
cycling.
The current transport system raises a
series of problems. For example, traffic jams
and the danger of cycling in Kolkata have
led to cycling being banned on major roads.
This makes it difficult for environmentally
conscious Indians to travel by bike.
By banning cyclists from some roads,
Kolkata appears to be promoting pollution.
In contrast, Nanded was praised for
redesigning roads to create separate lanes
for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in
2005, which is seen as one step towards a
more limited pollution.

2.1.Choose two colours; use one colour to

highlight all the elements that refer to the
problem, the other colour to highlight the
possible solutions.

Living and breathing in some Indian

cities is taking years off the lives of children,
and marking what is left with bronchitis,
asthma, all kinds of chest and throat
infections. Faced with an increasing number
of children developing respiratory diseases,
doctors have sounded the alarm.
All agree that the number of children
who need medical attention is a direct
result of the polluted air, three times as
much in the last decade. No less than three
thousand children die every year in Delhi
because of pollution. The worsening air
pollution in the Capital has become the
primary killer of infants and is slowly
poisoning them with every passing day.
Most of these doctors feel quite helpless.
"In the last decade, from about 10 cases a
day the number has increased to over 25,
especially in the age group of under two
years, most of whom have bronchial and
respiratory disorders," said Dr Bhatia. He
said that the amount of time he must
devote to children with respiratory trouble
has begun to take a toll on the time he can
give to others.

3.1.Read the article carefully and highlight

the words and expressions referring to an
evolution or an increasing problem.
3.2.Read the last sentence. Would you say
that the problem affects only children with
respiratory problems? Why?
4.Imagine a subheading for each article.

I. XXVI Write the beginning of an article

Use the following information elements to
write the beginning of an article
Information technology: important role in
India today.
India: 2nd largest technically qualified
(English-speaking) manpower after the US
Indian IT companies: profits and growth
creation of jobs in the IT sector (massive
employment: 8.9 million people)
growth of many cities

1.1.Find out the words that express an

opposition or a contrast. Highlight them in the
article.
1.2.Rephrase the comparison between Delhi
and Beijing.
