Black Ships Before Troy:

The Story of the Iliad

Extension Project
Bloom Ball: A Creative Book Report
Directions for completion:
You will receive 12 copies of this circle. You can print the circles
on plain white paper or colored construction paper or cardstock.
You will cut out the 12 circles. Pay close attention to the fold lines
(the pentagon shape). Do not write outside the lines. You may
want to fold the edges up at this point to remind yourself not to
write in this area.
Do NOT attempt to assemble the ball until you have completed
writing on ALL pieces.
Number the circles 1-12. Make sure you number in the same
place on every circle. Make sure the number still shows after you
complete the next step.
You should try to have the overall style and colors used on the
Bloom Ball reflect the tone and style of the book.

Complete the circles according the directions given on the next page.
Be very neat!
You may write directly on the circles if the paper is a light color or
you may type the information and glue to the circle.
The ball should be colorful and visually fun, but the most
important aspect is what is written in the circles.
Use your best writing skills including correct spelling, grammar,
and punctuation.
Remember, I am looking for advanced quality work!

Decorate the edges of the circles preferably with a design related to

your novel.
Your decorations should be on the folded edges only.
The edges will be folded up on your finished project.

When all steps have been completed and all the edges are decorated,
glue or staple the circles together.
Be sure that all edges are facing up around your circle.

You should end up with five pentagons facing up and five facing
down.
Use your creativity and your knowledge of the book to complete
each circle with the required information.
Circle 1: Write the title and author of your selected novel. Plan your lettering to use
up the entire circle and to be attractive. Spell everything correctly and decorate the
circle appropriately. Include your name near the number on this circle.
Circle 2: Divide the novel into three sections (for example, if your novel is 300
pages, section 1 would be pages 1-55, section 2 would be pages 56-90, and section
300 would be pages 91-146). In circle 2, write a summary of section 1. Include key
events and important ideas. This summary should 5-7 sentences.
Circle 3: In circle 3, write a summary of section 2. Include key events and
important ideas. This summary should 5-7 sentences.
Circle 4: In circle 4, write a summary of section 3. Include key events and
important ideas. This summary should 5-7 sentences.
Circle 5: Draw a picture of the part of the story that is most vivid to you. This might
be the most exciting part or the saddest part or the most surprising part. Think
about what part really stands out to you the most. This can include computergenerated elements.
Circle 6: Write a poem about the setting of the story. Emphasize the role the
setting plays in the story. Your poem must be at least six lines.
Circle 7: In 5-7 sentences, describe the main character. Include both physical and
personality traits in the description. Include one quotation from the novel to
describe your character.
Circle 8: Identify the theme of the novel. What overall point about life/people does
the novel convey? Use complete sentences. Make sure you give a theme and not a
topic.
Circle 9: Include an important quotation that is directly related to the overall theme
of the book. Use your creativity to add color and images to this circle that help
showcase the overall mood of the theme.
Circle 10: Write a paragraph telling your opinion of the novel. Tell why you would or
would not recommend this novel. What does the author do well? What do you think
could be better? This evaluation should 5-7 sentences.
Circle 11: Find three examples of figurative language and copy them onto this
circle. Identify what type of figurative language is used. Then in 1 or 2 sentences
(for each example), explain the effect of the figurative language.
Circle 12: Write an alternative ending to the story. It should be at least seven
sentences long. Try to mimic the writing style of the author.
