With the launch of the 700 Vario in the fall of 1998, Fendt introduced the stepless Vario drive
in the mid-sized tractor class. Just two years later, the 716 Vario was the most produced
tractor model from Fendt. To meet the demands for more power and larger tyres, Fendt
introduced the 800 Vario range in 2003.
In the model year 2007, Fendt now presents the 700 and 800 Vario tractors with new
motorisation.
3

Compact high-horsepower tractors

The 700/800 ranges are equipped with the

latest generation of common rail engines
with electronic engine control, 4-valve
technology, intercooler and external exhaust
gas recirculation. The half cast frame with
integrated hydro-pneumatic front axle
suspension (lockable) makes a low vehicle
weight possible with high lift capacities at
the front and rear. Vario TMS - electronic
engine-transmission control permits driving
with the joystick or pedal. Variotronic TI

facilitates work by recording, storing and

playing operating sequences that are used
often with the push of a button, whenever
required.

Vehicle concept

Field
High hydraulic lift capacities and high payload
reserves guarantee trouble-free operation in
the field, whether with a plough or implement
combinations.

Grassland
Powerful, but still very manoeuvrable. Up to
205 hp guarantee high in-field efficiency with
mower combinations and loading wagons.

Transport
50 km/h top speed at reduced engine speed
ensures maximum transport capacity with
reduced fuel consumption.

Harvesting
Only a stepless transmission allows optimum
adaptation of travel speed to all harvesting
conditions.

Row crop work

Large tyres that provide plenty of ground
clearance are ideal for high in-field efficiency for
row crop work.

Vehicle body

Superior half frame design

The half cast frame ensures that the 700/800
Vario tractors have a low vehicle weight with the
highest lift capacities at the front and rear. The
tractors have an excellent power-to-weight ratio
and high payload reserves. The tractor body is
constructed as follows:
Cast, optimally formed half frame that is
flanged on to the Vario transmission. The
connecting points on the Vario transmission
were chosen because the transmission
housing already has the necessary rigidity
through the noise damping measures (ribbed
construction). A further advantage is the
unobstructed access to the control units on the
transmission housing.
Flexibly mounted engine ensures optimum
noise isolation.
Connection points for front axle attachment
and suspension are integrated.
Linkage for front power lift, front PTO and front
loader are worked into the half frame.

Adapted half frame design does not restrict

the steering angle.
At the front, the half frame terminates in
a plate, in which all functions such as the
hitch, external front power lift controls, top
link bracket, power outlet and hydraulic
connections are integrated.

Advantages of the half frame design:

Implements such as front loaders and
front power lifts can be bolted directly
to the tractor frame (i. e. simple and lowcost assembly)
Higher load capacity of the frame
permits higher tractor payload
The engine is mounted on silent
bearings (vibration isolation) and
therefore quieter, i. e. low overall noise
level
No additional frame for the front power
lift or front loader required

Engine

Power specifications
It is often asked what the different power
specifications in the technical documents
mean. In principle, there are various methods to
measure and characterise the performance of
an engine. In general, these are distinguished
by which auxiliary units are mounted while
measurements are taken.
A bare engine can supply more power to the
crankshaft than one that must also supply
consumers, such as the alternator, compressed
air system, hydraulic pumps etc. This results in
several different power specifications for the
same engine.

Common rail injection & emissions standards

To meet constantly stricter emissions
regulations, engines must continually become
cleaner. Common rail fuel injection Common
rail injection in combination with cooled
external exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) allows
the engine to meet current COM III a emission
standards. The emission standards that apply

Engine characteristics 700 Vario

High torque rise

As a rule, Fendt specifies the values

according to ECE-R 24 and EU 97/68.
ECE-R 24 measurement:
With fan (running along loosely = maximum
slip in the viscous clutch)
With radiator
ISO 14396 and EU 97/68 measurement:
Without fan
Without radiator (engine is cooled by an
external cooling circuit)
Therefore, in comparison to ECE-R 24, the
ISO or EU values are a bit higher because no
aggregates must be driven. In practice, these
values are of little use, since quite a relevant
factor is misappropriated. Irregardless of
the measuring standard, rated power and
maximum power are also specified.
Rated power is the power that the engine will
develop at rated engine speed.
Maximum power is the highest power output
that the engine develops over the entire
speed range. It lies at different engine speeds,
depending on the engine.
The difference between maximum and rated
power is called extra power. Likewise there is
also an extra power curve.

Fuel consumption
Through common rail, external EGR and
electronic engine control, fuel consumption
has been reduced significantly compared to the
previous models, although the engine complies
with stricter emissions standards.
Noise level
The following measures have reduced the noise
level in the 700/800 Vario tractors compared to
previous models:
Engine bulkhead fix-mounted to body - Noise
barrier between the engine and cab

Isolated exhaust line - Heat and sound

insulation
Free-standing exhaust attached to tractor
body no connection between cab and silencer
Bio-diesel (RME)
All Fendt tractors have been approved for use
with bio-diesel (RME), since 1995. The paint
and fuel lines and their respective seals are
resistant against the aggressive fuel. Shortened
engine oil servicing intervals and more frequent
monitoring of the fuel filter are necessary.
Despite its common rail fuel injection system,
the 700/800 Vario is also approved for use with
RME, since contrary to other systems, the rail
pumps are lubricated by the engine oil circuit.
Refer to the Operating Manual for further
information on the use of bio-diesel.
Cold-pressed vegetable oil
In general, the tractors in the 700/800 Vario
range are not approved for operation with
cold-pressed vegetable oils. According to
the current state of knowledge, there is no
company that offers conversions for common
rail engines. In the interest of the user, we
expressly recommend taking out an appropriate
insurance policy for the case of a possible
conversion, since, in the case of damages,
engines are not covered by any warranty from
Fendt or the engine manufacturer.

Alternative fuel:
Biodiesel (RME)

Servicing & maintenance

Costs for servicing and maintenance also
contribute to the overall profitability of a tractor.
That is the reason why focus was placed on
simple and inexpensive maintenance during the
conceptual development of the 700/800 Vario
tractors.

The 700 and 800 Vario tractors are equipped

with the time-tested Fendt ML 160 Vario.
The ML 160 has the same basic design and
operating principle as all Vario transmissions
from Fendt.
Since it was launched at the Agritechnica
in 1995, this design principle has been
further improved and refined, but remains
fundamentally unchanged. According to the
motto: make the best better. With over 50,000
Vario transmissions that prove themselves
inpractical everyday operations, Fendt has
gathered experience through high-volume
production and that means operational
reliability for our customers. The top speed of 50
km/h is already attained at a fuel-saving engine
speed of 1700 rpm.

Transmission efficiency
An issue that is discussed again and again is
transmission efficiency. To determine the exact
efficiency of a transmission, it must be removed
from the tractor and measured on a testing
stand. This does not make sense in practice,
since here the influence of the axles, the rest of
the drive train, as well as all auxiliary units, such
as generator, air-conditioning, compressed air

Transmission

... the measured efficiency for a tractor

with stepless transmission is top: during
the measurements, 81% of the power
was transmitted to the wheel hubs on the
Vario 926... The influence of the complete
drive train (rear axle, 4WD and consumers,
such as the hydraulic pump) was taken into
account here.

Type of hydrostats
Since the Fendt Vario transmission is
a hydrostatic-mechanical drive with
powersplitting, it is often erroneously assumed
that it has poor transmission efficiency due to
the use of hydrostats.

and hydraulic systems, etc. are not taken into

account. For the driver it is the overall efficiency
of the tractor that is important, i.e. how much
of the power is actually transmitted to the
wheels. There are countless measurements and
publications that impressively document the
outstanding efficiency of the Vario transmission.

Conventional axial piston pump

Stroke

30 swing angle

But Fendt Vario hydrostats differ fundamentally

from conventional hydrostats, for example, from
those found in self-propelled vehicles.
Fendt Vario axial piston pump

The main factors influencing the efficiency of a

hydrostat are their swing angle and operating
pressure. Due to their design, conventional
hydrostats permit a swing angle of only 30.
Since they do not have seals between the piston
and cylinder, their operating pressure cannot
be increased, which in turn means that their
efficiency cannot be increased. The significantly
higher efficiency of the Fendt hydrostats is
based on a 45 swing angle, piston rings permit
operating pressure to be increased to 500 bar.

New compact Vario Transmission ML 160

Service-friendly
The higher the efficiency is, the less energy is
lost through conversion into heat and the lower
the load on the radiator and oil is. Through the
excellent efficiency of the Fendt hydrostatics,
the transmission oil only needs to be changed
every 2000 hrs. A special oil is not required.
Shuttle gearbox
Shifting from forward to reverse with the
Vario transmission is as simple as swinging the
displacement pump in the opposite direction,
without any wear on the transmission. Contrary
to other transmission concepts, no power shift
- shuttle clutches is necessary.
Power splitting
A planetary gear set at the transmission input
distributes engine power in varying proportions
to the mechanical and hydrostatic branches.
With increasing speed, the share of the power
transmitted through the hydrostatic branch
decreases. At top speed, the entire engine
power output is transmitted through the
mechanical branch. The engine therefore has
excellent efficiency, even at top speeds, since

the top speed is already attained at a reduced

engine speed.
Drive unit
By rotating the actuator shaft, control valves are
actuated, which in turn swing the hydrostats
either out, back or in the opposite direction
(reverse).
Control system
In the Vario transmission, a change in
transmission ratio, and therefore the driving
speed, is made by changing the swing angle of
the axial piston units. In the transmission, this is
realised through a curved path on the actuator
shaft.
By rotating this shaft, the control valves are
actuated, which in turn swing the axial piston
units. The entire actuation process is purely
mechanical. The valve for the clutch function is
hydraulically controlled by the clutch pedal.
The signals from the joystick are processed
electronically and transmitted to an actuator
unit. An electromechanical drive specifies a ratio
setpoint value by rotating the actuator shaft, the
pump and hydro motor are swung accordingly.

Electronic control also takes over a

wide range of further convenience and
monitoring functions:

Monitoring of temperature, pressure and

Auxiliary transmission control

When serious malfunctions occur in the
control electrics or electronics, continued
driving is most likely no longer possible and
is also not permissible, due to reasons of
safety. To keep the tractor operable under
these circumstances, the Vario transmission,
unlike all other stepless transmissions on the
market, also has a mechanical control system
with which the tractor can be driven without
electrics/electronics, simply by turning a
handle. The transmission ratio is then adjusted
purely mechanically-hydraulically. To do this,
the actuator shaft is turned with a telescoping
key from within the cab. The max. speed is
then 34 km/h forward and 20 km/h reverse.
This auxiliary control is particularly handy for
diagnostics, since mechanical and electric/
electronic components can be easily separated.

Rear axle

Rear axle
Hydraulic lifting cylinder

The rear axle is a Fendt planetary axle with

integrated powershiftable disc lock. It has a wet
multi-disc brake.
Two different rear axles are used in the 700/800
Vario. The 712, 714 and 716 have an HA 130 with
8-hole flange, the 716, 818 and 820 are fitted
with the HA 160 with a 10-hole flange. This
permits the use of larger rear tyres.

Reactive steering system

A special steering valve automatically sets
the steering back to straight-ahead driving
when the steering wheel is released, e. g. after
negotiating a curve. This ensures better straightahead driving at fast speeds on the road. The

16

Axles

high pump capacity (even at low engine speeds)

permits steering without great effort.

Advantages steering:
Load sensing valve: Oil is only supplied to
the steering, when steering movements are
made.
The steering is supplied by the axial piston
displacement pump. If the entire litre
capacity of the displacement pump is
required by the control units, the steering is
supplied by an auxiliary pump
A pump capacity of up to 110 l/min
(optionally 154 l/min) is available to the
control units.

implements, mounting and removing the front

loader, adding ballast weights without using
the front power lift)
To meet the increased demands of larger frontmounted implements, the front axle has been
reinforced and the front axle suspension load
has been increased 12 % compared to the
previous models.
Advantages of front axle suspension:
Maximum suspension travel is always
available ( 50 mm)
No bottoming out of the suspension
Optimum suspension comfort even in
extreme cases with high or or low front axle
loads

Front axle suspension

The front axle suspension has the following
features:

Nitrogen reservoirs are

used for suspension

Automatic level control

A position sensor determines the average
suspension travel (actual valve) which is then
compared to a setpoint value. Through pressure
adjustment in the hydraulic cylinder, suspension
travel always remains the same.
Locking the suspension
Conventional suspension systems have the
disadvantage that they cannot be locked.
For certain applications, though, this may be
necessary. Precise depth control is only possible
if the axle suspension is locked. On the Vario, the
front axle suspension can be locked from the
driver seat.
When the suspension is active or locked,
the front axle can still swing free, i. e. there
are no disadvantages in adapting to ground
conditions.

4WD and differential locks

The 4WD and differential locks can be engaged
and disengaged under load using the keypad
in the console on the right-hand side. The
multi-disc clutches are opened and closed
electrohydraulically.
The 700 and 800 Vario always offers 2
engagement options for the 4WD and
differential locks:
automatic mode
100% engagement
The function that has been selected is
indicated with an LED, furthermore, the 4WD
and differential lock functions are shown with
indicator lamps on the dashboard.

In the 700 / 800 Varios, the front and rear axles

are equipped with a 100% locking differential. In
addition to 100% locking, the front axle is fitted
with a self-locking differential (Locomatic).
Switches off when:
Speed > 20 km/h (must be reactivated to
engage)
Steering angle > 15
Brakes are operated
The 4WD and differential lock functions can be
used separately or combined.
For example, the 4WD automatic mode can
be used alone (maximum manoeuvrability).
But the 4WD function can also be combined
permanently with the differential lock automatic
mode (e. g. for ploughing).

Advantages of differential lock:

Simple operation, high operating comfort
Dual locking system in the front axle
(Locomatic + 100% lock) permits optimum
power transfer also in grassland, with front
loader or for transport work.

There are 3 PTO speeds available as

standard:
540 / 540 E (750) / 1000
The PTO speed is selected with the membrane
keypad on the right-hand control console, all
PTO speeds are taken from one stub. In the
neutral position, the PTO stub can be rotated
freely, even when the engine is running.
Economy PTO 540E
The ratio on the economy PTO is selected so
that practically the full engine power is available
(constant power engine, max. torque with
lowest fuel consumption). The economy PTO

permits extremely economical operations, for

example, when bringing out slurry.
Controls
The front and rear PTO shafts are engaged with
the yellow buttons in the power lift modules.
The buttons are recessed to prevent accidental
actuation. The external controls are located on
the left and right in the rear light brackets.
Advantages of the controls:
PTO shafts can be engaged and disengaged from the driver seat or externally
from both mudguards of the tractor

20

PTO shafts

Technical design
The power from the engine goes directly
through the transmission to the PTO. The power
flow is generated through a wet PTO clutch.
The neutral position allows the stub axle to be
rotated easily by hand, making it easy to attach
the drive shaft.
PTO efficiency
All Fendt Vario tractors offer excellent PTO
efficiency. The reason for this is that the engine
crank shaft and PTO stub axle are connected via
only one gear step in the PTO transmission. The
extension of the engine crankshaft runs through
the Vario transmission into the planetary
gear set and from there through the rear axle
housing to the PTO transmission.
Start-up control
PTO start-up is electronically controlled through
a load-dependent speed control. The PTO clutch
is charged with a certain pressure so that the
implement starts up in a fixed ramp-up time
(approx. 2 secs). The pressure used to close the
clutch, adapts itself to the torque requirements
of the implement. Lightweight implement, low
pressure, heavy implement, high pressure. All
that is needed to engage the PTO is a brief push
on the button. If the button is pushed longer
than 5 secs., max. pressure on the PTO clutch
builds up immediately in the PTO clutch - high
break-out torque - emergency operation mode.
If the specified start-up procedure did not suit
the implement optimally, the driver can adapt
PTO start-up by calibrating the start-up control.

Advantages of the start-up control:

Load-dependent PTO start-up
Maximum service life for all driven PTO
assemblies
Reduced machine costs

21

The calibration menu is located in the centre

information display.
PTO automatic mode
PTO engagement can also be automated when
operating the front or rear power lift. When the
automatic mode is activated (yellow button),
the PTO automatically engages when the
linkage is lowered, and disengages when raised.
The travel speed must be greater than 1.0 km/h.

Standard with flange PTO

The 700/800 Vario is tted with a ange PTO as standard. This allows
you to switch between dierent PTO proles easily and in a relatively short amount of time,
whenever required.

Advantages of the PTO:

Customised operation for all kinds of
applications
The speed of the economy PTO lies in
the max. engine torque range and in the
optimum range of the fuel consumption
curve
Load-dependent start-up of the PTO
maximum service life for all driven PTO

Flange PTO
To meet the requirements of different
implements, the 700 and 800 Varios are
equipped with a flange PTO at the rear.

The following stub profiles can be

used:

Supply unit
The 700/800 Vario is equipped with a load
sensing hydraulic system. The heart of the
hydraulic system, an axial piston displacement
pump, supplies all consumers, such as steering,
rear and front power lift, and the electric
auxiliary control units. The displacement pump
operates precisely according to the pressure and
oil quantity requirements of these consumers.

Advantages of the supply unit:

High oil delivery capacity, optionally up to
154 l/min
Pump delivers only the amount of oil that is
required, along with the necessary pressure
Low power loss and therefore higher
efficiency
High control sensitivity - reacts quickly
Minimum oil heating

The high oil flow rate of the valves results in the

fast movement of all consumers. Limiting the
max. oil volume (in the control terminal) ensures
that several functions can always be operated
at the same time. If the oil delivery capacity
of the pump is not adequate, oil is distributed
by percentage to the consumers, according to
the settings. If a valve is promoted to a priority
valve, it is supplied with oil first. The standardequipped, easy-to-reach crossgate lever, which

is integrated in the armrest, can operate 2

control units at once. It is therefore no longer
necessary to reach between controls, which

Hydraulics

Power lift
The lifting power for the rear power lift is
provided by 2 large-sized lifting cylinders. The
linkage category (width) is cat. 2 and can be
changed to cat. 3. All Vario tractors are equipped
with quick couplers for ball size 3 in the lower
links as standard.
This simplifies exchanging implements among
all Fendt tractors without having to change the
balls every time.

Switching from cat. 2 to cat. 3

Linkage kinematics
An important criterion for the rear hydraulics, in
addition to maximum lift capacity, is continuous
lift capacity. The higher an implement is lifted,
the more lift power it requires. It is therefore
important that the lift capacity in the upper
lifting range increases, as is the case in Fendt
tractors. The Fendt lifting gear offers great
lifting power reserves in the lower range, so that
mounted implements can be lifted from the
ground in all cases.

Shock load stabilising

Through adjusting movements by the rear
hydraulics, shock loads that occur during
transport with mounted implements are
actively dampened. The linkage is lowered out
of the upper end limit a bit to counteract up and
down movements.
Shock load stabilising engages at a speed of
approx. 8 km/h. This cut-in speed can be set to
any desired value in the terminal.

Front loader

Front loader
The Fendt front loader concept
To guarantee universal applicability under all
conditions as far as possible, the Fendt 700/800
Vario range was designed as a multi-purpose
tractor. From the very start, the front loader,
front hydraulics and front PTO were designed
along with the tractor.
Each of these units can be retrofitted
The high permissible front axle load, the result
of strong axles and large tyres, offers enough
reserves for all implements and the toughest
operations
Special features
Single-phase mounting without support in
front, adapted to the new frame concept
No auxiliary frame is required
Optimum connection through cast console
No obstructions during maintenance work
No interference with the steering angle
Optimum visibility to the front
Can be mounted, without requiring the tractor
hydraulics, by using the front axle suspension
Optimum operating comfort through electric
valves
Multi-coupler is standard
Over 4 m lift height for trouble-free loading of
lorry trailers
Bonnet guard

Front loader attachment parts

Multi-coupler
Integrated lowering throttle valve

Eccentric bolt

Drive-in front loader for fast mounting

The Fendt front loader has a single-phase
coupling system. This allows the loader to be
transferred to different tractors in the Farmer
300 Ci, 300 Vario, 400, 700 und 800 Vario ranges.
Mounting and removing the drive-in front
loader
Raise front axle suspension all way.
Fold down integrated supports and adjust to
the standing surface. The supports are always
available on the front loader.
Remove eccentric bolt. This bolt is loosened by
turning, and is therefore easy to remove.
34

Hydraulics

bucket on its tip.
Lower suspension.
Uncouple multi-coupler - drive backwards
out of the front loader. Only two attachment
points, in the centre, remain on the tractor.

Front loader sizes

Two front loader models are available
for the 700/800 Vario tractors:
Size 3SX/70 DA
Size 3SX/75 DA

Both loaders have the same arm and only differ

in the design of the lift cylinder, which are both
double-acting, i. e. with down-force.
Front loader arm
Slim design: good forward visibility to
implement and material to be loaded.
High-grade material: front loader arm
manufactured of high-strength fine grained
steel, a material that is designed for the highest
loads.
Additional crossbeam gives the front loader
arm rigidity.
Front windscreen on cab can be opened fully
during front loader work.
Lowering throttle valve guarantees uniform
lowering speed, independent of the load.
Pipe rupture valve: If a pipe ruptures, the lift
cylinder is blocked.
Parallel linkage
All front loaders are equipped with a quickchange frame and mechanical parallel linkage.
The linkage maintains the same position of the
attachment over the entire lift height. Reduced
operational demands on the driver improves
work capacity.

Vibration damping
Upon request, the Fendt front loader can be
equipped with a vibration damping system.
Nitrogen reservoirs dampen any vibrations that
occur. For digging work, vibration damping can
be switched off to prevent constant controlling
of the damping system.
Shock load stabilising on/o

Advantages of shock load stabilising:

No bounce during transport work
Tractor and front loader are protected
Greater ride comfort
Greater driving safety

Third hydraulic circuit on front loader

Additional hydraulic front loader attachments
(e.g. silo grab, bale grab) can be operated with
the third hydraulic circuit. A multi-way valve,
with which the oil for the tilt adjustment of
hydraulic attachments can be distributed, is
located on the front loader arm.

Cab

Driver station
The cab on the 700/800 Vario range was
designed for ergonomic, perfect operation. All
control elements are located in the immediate
vicinity of the driver.
Bonnet
Large intake area for cooling air
Optimum cooling capacity
Low flow speed
Less soiling, better visibility to the front
Good visibility to front-mounted implements
and the area in front of the tractor
Bonnet can be opened on both sides
Both bonnet parts can be swung up at the same time and therefore ensure optimum access to the entire engine compartment.

Advantages of the bonnet:

Optimum access to engine and cooler unit
Radiator can be cleaned easily, even with
mounted front implements
Trouble-free air filter change, even with
mounted front implements
Both parts of the bonnet are supported by
gas springs.

Pneumatic spring elements

Cab suspension
The cab suspension is integrated in the
substructure of the cab. The cab is mounted
on hydraulic supports in the front. The cab is
therefore connected to the tractor body free
of vibrations and stabilised in the fore-aft
direction. The oil filling in the hydraulic supports
reduces the noise that is transferred from the
tractor body to the cab.
The rear cab bearing is either a pneumatic or
mechanical suspension element. This eliminates
vibrations and shock loads that are transferred
from the tractor body to the cab. The cab
suspension is available in two versions.
39

Hydraulic supports

A combination of suspension systems

The combination of shock load stabilising, cab suspension and front axle
with level control, ensures ride comfort on par with commercial vehicles.
This also increases safety signicantly, since the vehicle is not in danger
of developing bounce when driving with mounted implements. The load
on the front axle remains constant and steerability is maintained.

Variocentre

Steel spring shock absorber

The steel coil-over shock absorber unites the
helical spring and shock absorber in one single
suspension element.
Air spring damper
In the air spring shock absorber module, the
shock absorber and helical spring are replaced
by a pneumatic suspension element. The air
suspension requires a compressed air system in
the tractor.
The air spring shock absorber module has
integrated levelling, which automatically adjusts
the suspension to compensate for different loads.
This makes switching to different suspension
levels (suspension stiffness) unnecessary.

Mechanical cab suspension

Advantages of the cab suspension:

Cab suspension for maximum driving
comfort and greatest health benefits for
the driver
Optimum fore-to-aft and lateral stabilisation prevents pitching
Front cab bearing on hydraulic elements
that adapt their damping properties to the
cab vibrations
Cab fully acoustically isolated from the
tractor body, less noise inside

been made slimmer, which improves visibility to
the front wheels. Air intake and filter are located

under the left side window. Settings are made

with the rotary controls on the left side in the
cab.

Advantages of the heating:

Operating comfort as in passenger cars
Narrow steering column, therefore better
visibility to the front wheels
Cab is not heated from the engine compartment

Driver seat
The 700/800 Vario range is equipped with a
driver seat from Grammer (MSG95AL/731).
Embroidered Fendt logo on the backrest
Active charcoal layer in seat cushion
The MSG95AL741, is available as an option

Passenger seat
The passenger seat is located on the left-hand
side of the cab at the entrance. To facilitate
climbing in and out of the cab, it can be folded
down. A safety belt prevents the passenger from
being thrown forwards during strong braking
manoeuvres.

Dashboard
The driver can read all important fill levels and
speeds on the dashboard. In the centre of the
dashboard panel is a multiple display. The time
and operating hours are displayed as default.
The basic display is interrupted by:
Warnings: hand brake is applied, engine
temperature too high, etc.
Fault messages: faults in the 4WD, differential
locks, etc.
Information displays: backup display for
indicator lamps
41

Advantages of the dashboard:

Few indicator lamps
One display field for warning, fault
messages and information displays

Driving Vario

Driving Vario
In order to meet the needs of different drivers
and operating situations equally, there are
several ways to drive the 700/800 Vario:
The transmission and engine are controlled by
the driver: The driver has direct access to the
response of the engine and transmission. The
transmission ratio can be set with the joystick
or the driving pedal, the engine speed with
the hand or foot throttle or the speed memory
keys on the joystick console.
The transmission is controlled by the driver
together with automatic, electronic engine
control (TMS): The driver sets the speed with
the joystick or driving pedal, the engine
management provides the required engine
speed automatically.

Acceleration
rate control

To prevent the tractor from driving off through

an unintentional movement of the joystick
while the transmission is activated, the joystick
must be activated in order to start driving from
standstill (press key on back of joystick). The key
can be pressed before, during or after moving
the joystick.

Activation key

Starting from standstill

The default position of the joystick is in resting
position. No travel direction is preselected.
To start driving from standstill, the joystick
is moved in the desired direction of travel
(forward: push lever forward; reverse: pull lever
back) and press the activating key. Then the
travel direction indicators on the dashboard
light up and the tractor drives off at the selected
acceleration rate.
Selecting acceleration rate
With the thumb switch on the side of the
joystick, four different acceleration rates can be
selected at any time while driving. In rate I, the
amount the speed changes when the joystick
is moved once, can be set from 0.02 km/h to
0.5 km/h.
42

Cab

Rate II is fixed at 0.5 km/h,

Rate III at 1.0 km/h and
Rate IV at 2 km/h (applies to rated engine speed
of 2100 rpm).

Changing direction
The 700/800 Vario offers two options for
reversing travel direction:
Finely controlled reversing
Pull joystick back (when driving forwards) until
the tractor comes to a standstill, press the
activation key and pull the joystick back again.
Automated direction-changing
Press rocker switch on steering column
adjustment lever. If the driver pushes
the rocker switch on the steering wheel
adjustment lever while driving, a programmed
change of travel direction is initiated. The
vehicle decelerates to a standstill and
accelerates in the opposite direction of travel.
Or move joystick to the left with the activation
key pressed

Stop & Go Function

If the switch in the steering wheel adjustment
lever is pushed and held, the tractor decelerates
to a standstill, when it is released; the tractor
travels in the direction the switch was pushed.

Quick reversing reverse

Quick reversing forward

Forward travel:
Switch pressed forward: The tractor
decelerates, stands still and after releasing
the switch, travels forward again.
Reverse travel:
Switch pulled back, the tractor drives in
reverse after letting go of the switch
Quick reversing - stop & go
43

Driving Vario

Pedal mode activation

Pedal mode
If driving pedal mode is activated with key
located in front of the joystick, the travel speed
can be set with the accelerator pedal, which
now functions as a driving pedal. The engine
management system TMS is activated at the
same time.
The speed range that the pedal covers is set
with the sliding control on the joystick console,
the corresponding indicator appears in the
Varioterminal.

Speed range control

Settings
All settings are made in the Varioterminal.
The most important terminal settings are
displayed on the main menu page.
A major design objective was to give the
driver an overview of all the most important
transmission settings at a glance.

Automatic maximum output control

The automatic maximum output control
compares the target engine speed (set by the
engine control) with the actual engine speed,
and therefore can determine if engine speed
has dropped. At a certain drop in engine speed
(can be set by the driver), the transmission
automatically reduces the transmission ratio,
so that the engine speed cannot drop further.
After selecting the menu, the degree of engine
speed reduction can be set from 0% to 30%.
The value is shown by a percentage. Changes
take effect immediately. The driver can adjust
the automatic maximum output control flexibly
to the prevailing conditions. The automatic
maximum output control only reduces
transmission ratios. Renewed acceleration,
when the engine speed increases again, can be
initiated either manually using the joystick or
automatically using cruise control.
Cruise control
The cruise control allows the driver to attain
and maintain a preset driving speed easily and
precisely, as often as desired. The Vario has two
44

Cab

independent cruise control memories so that

two speeds (for example, for working in the field
and driving on the road) can be stored. The set
speed is shown in the terminal. When cruise
control is ON, the cruise control indicator lights
up.
To reactivate a speed that is stored in
memory, the driver moves the joystick to the
right (Cruise control on). The transmission
accelerates or decelerates depending on the
selected acceleration rate, until the preselected
speed is attained.

The Variotronic TI permits function buttons on

the joystick to be assigned with functions freely,
according to the needs of the driver - a first in
tractor design. Frequently used functions can
therefore be operated from the most ergonomic
position. This increases operating comfort
significantly.
48

Cab

By recording several function s, operating

sequences are created, which are required
often, especially for implement combinations.
A common combination for cultivation, for
example, is a front ripper/front packer - rotary
harrow - seed drill. With the Fendt Variotronic
TI (Variotronic TeachIn System), you can record
and save operating procedures that occur
frequently and play them back again and again.
Each operating function is assigned to a setting.

Advantages of Variotronic TI:

Function buttons on the joystick may be
assigned freely
Recurring operating sequences can be
recorded and played back with the touch

For registered tradenames, so far as they are specified, see current list of fuels and fluids, which is available from
every authorised Fendt workshop as a Service Information memo.
If the fuel contains more than 0.5 % sulphur, the oil change frequency must be halved. Only use diesel fuels
approved according to DIN EN 590, see Service Information 40/04.
Only use antifreeze approved according to Service Information 11/02.
After filling, the engine must run at least 5 minutes, so that the axle drives are filled.

Fluids and Fuels 700 Vario - 800 Vario

Bio-diesel
Fuel quality
RME R apeseedM ethylE ster,
FAME F atty A cid M ethyl E ster fuel
Use acc. to DIN EN 141214. The use of cold-pressed
rapeseed oil is not possible.
Servicing intervals
Oil and oil lter change intervals are to be halved. Every time after
lling the tank If bio-diesel is lled after conventional diesel is used, the fuel lter should be replaced, since bio-diesel acts like a
solvent, it may cause diesel fuel residues to clog the lter.
Notes on use
Bio-diesel is suitable for winter operations down to approx. - 10
C. At temperatures below - 10 C, diesel fuel needs to be added
to prevent the bio-diesel from precipitating. The mixing ratio must
be approx. 50 : 50. Diesel fuel must be used at temperatures below
- 16 C. Bio-diesel can be mixed in any ratio with diesel fuel. Driving
performance may be slightly lower. Fuel consumption may be slightly
higher. Always ll diesel fuel if the tractor will not be used for sometime (more than 3 months), since the injector
elements may otherwise stick.
Special characteristic of bio-diesel
Bio-diesel is manufactured from vegetable oil (mainly
rapeseed oil) in a chemical process that converts vegetable
oil into bio-diesel using methanol as a catalyst. Bio-diesel is
practically free of sulphur, thus almost no sulphur dioxide is
produced during combustion. The exhaust contains less
- carbon monoxide
- hydrocarbons
- particulate matter (e.g. soot)
than when using conventional diesel fuels. Bio-diesel is
biodegradable, ground and ground water are not aected as much
in case of accidental spills.

Bio-hydraulic oil
Bio-hydraulic oil quality
Use bio-hydraulic oil made from rapeseed oil and synthetic
oils according to viscosity standard ISO VG 32 - ISO VG 46.
Note:
The use of polyglycol-based synthetic oils is not possible.
Servicing intervals
The oil and oil lter change intervals are every 1000 op.
hours or annually, whichever comes rst. When converting
to bio-hydraulic oil after approx. 10 - 15 op. hrs. change
hydraulic oil lter, since bio-hydraulic oil acts as a solvent,
it may cause existing oil residues to clog the lter.
Notes on use
Bio-hydraulic oil is suitable for winter operations down to approx.
- 15 C. At outdoor temperatures below approx. -15 C and longer
standing times, vegetable-based hydraulic oils can thicken. After a
cold-start, allow a short warm-up time at medium engine speed, to
ensure smooth functioning of the hydraulic steering and the power
lift. At extremely low temperatures, the entire tractor may need
to be warmed. Avoid mixing bio-hydraulic oil with other mineral
oils, e.g. with other oil remaining in the system, or by operating an
external implement, since this may aect its positive environmental
properties and it may be dicult to dispose of it (hazardous waste).
When disposing of oil, observe applicable legislation
and the instructions of the oil manufacturer. A mixture
of more than 2% leads to changes in viscosity and
may lead to trouble with the hydraulic valves.
Special characteristics of bio-hydraulic oil
Bio-hydraulic oil is biodegradable, ground and ground
water are not aected in case of accidental spills.

Important:
Despite the high environmental-compatibility of bio-hydraulic oil,
oil spills must always be reported.
