Letter from the Rectory

Dear Friends
Last month I wrote about making a difference, and we are now entering
November, the month when we remember those who have made a
difference to our lives, or to the life of our nation. If you would like to
reflect again on the life of a deceased friend or family member, join us for
the Commemoration Service on 4th November (details in the magazine).
Remembrance Sunday services will take place on 8th November at All
Saints and St Peters, as we give thanks again for past sacrifices and recommit ourselves to lives of peace.
One of the optional discussion questions at the recent Grave Talk
sessions was, How would you like to be remembered?. This question
challenges us all to decide what in our lives is significant enough to be
remembered by our loved ones, when we are no longer in their sight. Jesus
used the words, Well done, good and faithful servant, to those who had
used their gifts productively (Matthew 25: 21&23) and made the most of
whatever resources they had been given. The word servant is highly
significant here, as few of us would choose to be remembered as servants,
yet to Jesus that was the highest accolade. He told his disciples, Anyone
who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all (Mark
9:35).
I enjoy watching Downton Abbey and observing the interdependence of
servants and masters, especially when characters move from one social
stratum to the other, usually provoking shock and indignation from both
strata! I am also eternally grateful to all the people in our parishes who
demonstrate daily their servant hearts, in their willingness to do whatever
needs to be done for our churches and the wider community. There is no
hierarchy before God, so we are all equally loved and equally valued.
As you begin to prepare for Christmas and make your list of gifts and
goodies to be bought, please remember to serve those who have nothing,
by donating to a charity for the homeless, or refugees or perhaps to one of
our oversees projects. That way you will make a lasting difference to
someones life!
With my love and prayers

Anne
