A Page from My Book
Presented by International Quilt Festival
A selection from the 220 participants from
the internet-based QuiltArt Network are
presented in this ongoing, free-form exercise
in creativity, specifically planned to encourage
quilt artists to stretch and grow. The exhibit
consists of five small monthly quilt pages and
journal entries from each participating artist.

Jenny Haskins, whose background is in fine
art, has been passionate about the medium of
machine embroidery for over a decade. She
uses fabric as her canvas, threads as her paint,
and the sewing machine as her brush. More
recently, she has ventured into the world of
digitizing her own art works and creative
machine embroidery.

The following are some suggestions to helpjou and fellow students have a good
experience while taking classes at Quilt Festival.
I Please turn the sound "off" on all cellular phones and pagers
when classes and lectures begin. Ringing interrupts the instructor's
train of thought and is annoying to your fellow attendees.
2. Be on time. Coming in after the teacher has given her opening
remarks and started the students on their first step is disruptive. If
you are late, please quietly try to catch-up and do not expect the
teacher to start her lesson from the beginning.

Nine talented artists, designers,
teachers, and authors have collectively
collaborated to introduce a provocative
type of core study to textile enthusiastssilk fabric manipulation with all types of
adornment such as dyeing, painting,
stenciling, foiling, silk screening,
printing, and resists.
Explore the enormous capabilities of the
silk fiber in the Silk Experience. Although
silk will be the basic "fabric of choice" for
the study, many of the techniques can be
transferred to other types of fabrics and
materials. Choose the days, topics, and
teachers you wish, and add them to your
Quilt Festival 2005 experience.

Make exciting silk fabrics for art to wear,
quilts, and home decor by utilizing dull,
stained, and just plain ugly silk
kimono/obi fabrics. Colburn will unlock
secrets to easy processes of over-dyeing
(recycling the Japanese silks) and magic
techniques for covering stains and
damaged fabrics. Her tips for handling
problems with older silks are invaluable.
Best of all, her Japanese silk expertise
and willingness to share with you her
kimono fabrics collection certainly
makes this class a unique experience.

Foils are a perfect companion to
iridescent silks and will add that touch of
pizzazz to any project. Hand-dye the
silks with self-setting dyes that are
amazingly fast and easy to use. Glickman
will then guide you through creating
free-form images and designs by fusing
the foils to the silks in a number of
fanciful ways. You can utilize the sample
you make in class as a banner, scarf, or
large sample for clothing attachment.

A fast paced, intriguing, and different
kind of color lecture! Artists, writers, and
musicians have used colors for centuries
to invoke a mood, portray an idea, or
establish an emotion. The colors that we
consciously or unconsciously choose to
use in our quilts, garments, and homes
can influence our energy, health, and
well-being. Learn about the symbolism of
colors, their healing properties, and how
to determine the color energy you need to
create balance in your quilts, your work,
and your environment.

Rittenhouse
Rittenhouse introduces you to the easy
"color spray" process with a new spray
applicator, just being introduced to the
market. Learn to apply "color" to various
silk fabric types, including the popular
silk/rayon velvet. Using a ready-made silk
opera purse you will utilize the spray
processes using dyes/paints, in conjunction
with pre-cut stencils. The new spray pump
promises to be a perfect color and imaging
tool for quilters, designers, and fiber artists.
