PREVIOUSLY...

Ypres is a city with a very rich and varied past. During the Middle Ages Ypres was a
flourishing trading centre. In those days Ypres was one of the main Flemish cloth
centres next to Bruges and Ghent. The impressive cloth hall bears witness to this
golden age. Saint Martins cathedral and the splendid ramparts also date back to
this period.
During the First World War the charming town was reduced to a heap of rubble.
Ypres was almost entirely destroyed by four years of senseless violence. The citizens
of Ypres rebuilt their city with respect for the past.

TODAY...

The city is surrounded by a green belt, the ramparts. You can walk along them
from the Ammunition Dump past Menin Gate up to the former open swimming
pool. The Menin Gate is the greatest war monument under which the Last Post is
sounded every evening at 8 pm to keep the memory of the many victims alive. The
In Flanders Fields Museum tells the story and the memories of WWI by means of
personal testimonies and modern techniques. The surroundings of Ypres have a
great deal to offer also.
This brochure will help you discover Ypres. It lists the places of interest, sites,
museums, events The city map and the map of the surroundings will act as a
guideline.

VISIT THE VISITORS CENTRE FOR YPRES AND THE WESTHOEK, LOCATED IN THE WESTERN
WING OF THE CLOTH HALL. THERE YOU WILL DISCOVER THE MANY ASSETS OF YPRES, THE
WESTHOEK AND FRENCH FLANDERS, OVER THE BORDER.

CENTENARY 14-18

From October 1914 to October 1918 the battlefield of the First World War was located a mile or two from the centre
of Ypres. The trenches described a curve from north to south around Ypres. No fewer than five bloody battles were
fought in that notorious Ypres Salient. More than 150 military cemeteries were built and monuments erected
in and around the city in the 1920s, the most important of which is the Menin Gate. The monuments, sites,
cemeteries and museums still remind us of the futility of war and the most tragic period in Ypres history today.
The complete story is poignantly narrated in the In Flanders Fields Museum. The pocket guide The Great War
provides an overview of remarkable points of interest regarding WWI in Ypres and the Flanders Fields Country.
All the Ypres museums can be found under the museums section in this brochure.

NEW IN 2015: YPRES SALIENT - THREE NEW ENTRY POINTS

The Ypres Salient will be further
unlocked on 4 April 2015. Three new
entry points along the Ypres Salient will
then be opened. Todays landscape is
shown there as a witness of the past,
100 years ago, in a historical film, three
walking routes, a digital application and
a cycling route that connects the three
points. From 4 April the IFFM will also
present a historical exhibition about the
Second Battle of Ypres, the Gas Attack.

ENTRY POINT - NORD

The point of entry in the north is the
reconstructed farm Klein Zwaanhof. The
farm is located amidst the ruins of the
Second Battle of Ypres, on 22 April 1915,
known as the Gas Attack. The creation
and development of the Northern Salient
is presented together with a number of
portraits of war poets such as Canadian
doctor John McCrae and Irishman
Francis Ledwidge. The walking route
reccies the zone of Pilkem Ridge and
runs along the Yorkshire Trench &
Dug Out site (reconstructed trenches
- Bargiestraat) and the Coln Valley and
Caesars Nose military cemeteries.
Entry point North: Kleine Poezelstraat,
8904 Boezinge

ENTRY POINT - EAST

In the east the entry point is located at
Hooge Crater Museum along the Menin
Road opposite Hooge Crater Cemetery.
This entry point illustrates the creation of
the front in the centre of the Salient near
Bellewaerde Ridge. Besides the historical
film the emphasis here is on the beautiful
Castle parks that studded the landscape
around Ypres before the destructive war.
The walking route here passes - among
other things - the monument to the
Liverpool Scottish and Maple Copse
military cemetery.
Entry point East/ pavilion in front of
Hooge Crater Museum: Menin Road 467,
8902 Zillebeke

ENTRY POINT - SOUTH

The south has two remarkable sites at
the entry point. The entry point itself
is located in the provincial domain De
Palingbeek at the historical site The Bluff.
There you can start your explorations on
a recently installed walking path/platform
through the former No mans land, along
various craters. The historical film shows
how the underground war built up in the
southern Ypres Salient where numerous
mines exploded. Along the extensive
walking circuit, you will reach the second
site, Hill 60. You will have stunning
panoramic views of the centre of Ypres
there and reach the large Caterpillar
Crater.

Entry point South - The Bluff:

Palingbeekstraat + Hill 60:
Zwarteleenstraat, 8902 Zillebeke
The provincial domain De Palingbeek
organises a nature-historical walk along
The Buff and in De Palingbeek domain
on the third Saturday of the month at 2
pm in the months of August through to
November. Register via Bezoekercentrum
De Palingbeek tel. +32(0)57 230 840.
Participation costs: 2,50/pers. (from 10
pers.)

NOT TO BE MISSED
On 4 April 2015 you can discover these
sites along the Ypres Salient from the
northern and eastern point of entry.
During a 1 h walk the guides will show
you the importance of the landscape in
warfare. Guided tours start on the half
hour between 2pm and 5 pm at Hoeve
Klein Zwaanhof and Hooge Crater
Museum.
On the Day of the Park, 31 May 2015, the
southern point of entry is highlighted.
You can register for one of the three
guided walks or one of the two cycle tours
along the Ypres Salient.

CENTENARY 14-18
YPRES SALIENT - CEMETERIES
There are no Belgian or German
cemeteries on the territory of Ypres
The largest Belgian cemetery nearby
is located in Houthulst. Others in the
area are Oeren, Hoogstade, Keiem,
Ramskapelle, Steenkerke, West-Vleteren
and Adinkerke. German cemeteries
can be found in Langemark (among
others, students), Vladslo (group of
statues by Kthe Kollwitz), Hooglede and
Menin-Wevelgem. St.-Charles de Potyze
is a French military cemetery on the
Zonnebeekseweg where more than 4,000
French soldiers were laid to rest.
The Ypres territory has 75
Commonwealth war cemeteries.
Two can be reached on foot from the
Market Square, i.e., Ypres Reservoir
Cemetery (Minneplein) and Ramparts
Cemetery (Lille Gate). Bedford House
Cemetery (Lille Road) or Menin Road
South Military Cemetery (Menin Road)
are located in the direct proximity of the
centre.

CANAL EMBANKMENT
JOHN McCRAE SITE
The famous Essex Farm Cemetery, also
on the Ypres-Yser Canal, is where John
McCrae wrote his world famous In
Flanders Fields poem on 2 and 3 May
1915. Today, you can also visit the canal
embankment itself besides the military
cemetery and the fortified shelters.
Informative signs and a sign-posted
walking path lead you through this
interesting site. 15 year-old Joe Strudwick,
one of the youngest British fallen, is also
buried here.
Open permanently, accessible via the
Diksmuidseweg.

EVENTS YPRES 2015

In the context of the centennial remembrance of the First World War many events
are organised from 2014 to 2018. In Ypres, the region, Flanders and the international
front region, very varied events are organised to remember the First World War in an
appropriate manner. The term Tourism + must always be the driving force here.

THE LAST POST - MENIN GATE

The Last Post has been played every day
at 20:00 hrs exactly under the impressive
arches of the Menin Gate ever since 1928.
After WWI grateful civilians founded the
Last Post Association. The bugles of the
Last Post Association play the Last Post
from 1 January to 31 December, and in all
weathers. A special Last Post takes place
on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th
month in remembrance of the Armistice.
On 9 July 2015 the Last Post will resound
for the 30,000th time. Flemish actor
Wim Opbrouck makes this a unique
anniversary as part of the Province of
West Flanders cultural remembrance
programme Gone West. He calls fire
brigades all over the world to broadcast
the Last Post at the same time in honour
of the many victims of WWI, an Ode to
the Ode.

TO SEE | TO VISIT

1 | CLOTH HALL & BELFRY

The Cloth Hall served as a covered sales

and storage place for cloth on the (now
vaulted) waterway called the Ieperlee. The
construction of the hall was completed
in 1304. During the 1914-18 war the
building was completely destroyed except
for a section of the tower and a couple of
walls. The reconstruction occurred under
the guidance of architects J. Coomans
and P.A. Pauwels.
The sturdy belfry (70m) projects from
the middle of the long facade (125 m) of
the building. The present spire with its
openwork helmet and dragon (1692) was
restored to its original form.
Originally, the bottom tower section was
used as a treasury. The middle section
used to be an arms depot. The Cat
throwing occurred from this floor. The
49 bells of the carillon are suspended in
the Bellringers house.
Above the central archway entrance
Donkerpoort, under the coat of arms,
is a statue of Our Lady of Thuyne, the
patron of Ypres.
You can visit the 1st floor of the Cloth Halls
via the In Flanders Fields Museum and
combine your visit to the museum with
a visit to the belfry tower. The Ypres and
Westhoek visitors centre, the Museum
Knowledge Centre, the museum cafe and
the museum entrance are all located on the
ground floor.

3 | SAINT-MARTINS
CATHEDRAL

The cathedral is a former Episcopal

church in Gothic style reconstructed after
the First World War. Bishop Jansenius
and Count Robert of Bethune, the Lion
of Flanders are buried here.
There is also a beautiful side altar with an
altarpiece and the miracle statue of Our
Lady of Thuyne. The cathedral is open to
the public, except during worship (closed
between noon and 2 pm).

The Nieuwerck was built in 1619 against

the east face of the hall and town hall.
Resting on a row of pointed arches with
large cross windows and a classical
church window, this construction still
has a fairly Gothic appearance, however,
the decorations in the tympanums tend
towards the Renaissance.
In the council chamber there is a
splendid stain glass window after a
design by Arno Brys and draft of murals
by Charles Degroux (ca. 1870). This
chamber is open to the public during the
opening hours of the town hall.

The tower is 100 m high and is not open

to the public. The Lapidarium contains
the old ruins of Saint Martins deanery.
The Monastery building can be visited on
the north side of the cathedral.

from the Province of Munster (Ireland),
who fell in the Ypres Salient during the
First World War.

Every evening at 8 pm precisely the Last

Post has been sounded since 1928 under
the imposing arches of Menin Gate. This
memorial shaped like a Roman triumphal
arch displays the names of 54,896
soldiers of the then British empire who
went missing in action. This memorial
lists the names from the beginning of the
war until 15 August 1917. The soldiers,
who went missing after 16 August 1917
until the end of the war, are mentioned
on panels at Tyne Cot Cemetery in
Passchendaele. There are 34,984 of them.

11 | SAINT-PETERS

A section of the west tower and one of
the crossing pillars are all that remain of
this originally Romanesque church (12th
century).

12 | WOODEN HOUSE

The Menin Gate was built in the location

of the old mediaeval gate. During the
First World War the British troops
marched through this gate to defend the
Ypres Salient. Since 1928, the Last Post
is sounded every evening at 8 pm.

15th century. The facade of this
building displays a series of medallions
representing the seven deadly sins. It was
temporarily used as a town hall after the
First World War. Now it is used as a court
house for the chamber of commerce.

The choir dates back to the 14th century;

the lower church is in Late Gothic
style. The tower was built in 1636 and
was given a stone spire during the
reconstruction.

The wooden house in the Rijselsestraat is

a reconstruction of a 16th century house.
At the beginning of the 19th century
Ypres had more than 90 wooden houses.
This house is not open to the public.

CHURCH

In the old tollhouse (1899), also called

stalls. The Fish Gate with Neptune, the
god of the sea, was originally built in
1714.

You can join an exclusive guided visit on

Saturday afternoon to the brewery with
some tasting off course.

In April 2013 the kazematten behind the

Sint Jacob church opened their doors
to the general public for the first time.
Architect Benny Govaert has beautifully
restored these remarkable spaces. They
have several functions. The casemates are
freely accessible during opening hours.
The Sint Bernardus brewery has its own
brasserie there where you can enjoy a
bite to eat with a famous Sint Bernardus
beer in a unique decor. A contemporary
presentation of 10 centuries Ramparts

agent and as an anaesthetic for medical
purposes. Can only be visited with a

30 | GATEKEEPERS HOUSE
Access to this vaulted room is at street

that this is where staff officers of British
Commander Plumer prepared the attack
of 7 June 1917. That is when 19 depth
mines were detonated under the German
lines. Can only be visited with a guide.31

31 | SLUICE ROOM
A low door, also at street level and to the
right of Lille Gate, gives access to the
sluice doors thus allowing to control both
the lower lying Ieperlee and the rampart
moats. The Ieperlee crosses the city from
south to north and was navigable until
the 15th century; today is it covered. Can
only be visited with a guide.

38 | YPRES MONUMENT

Designed by Alos De Beule and unveiled

on Sunday 27 June 1926, to honour the
Ypres war victims, civilians and soldiers.
The Ypres soldiers departed for the front
from here.

Since 2010 there is also a memorial
plaque for the Ypres civilian victims of
both World Wars.

The ammunition dump dates back to

1817 and was built on the foundations
of a former French ammunition dump
by the army of the Netherlands under
William I. The building survived WWI,
and was restored in 1998. During a
guided visit you will be given an audiovisual presentation of the rampart and

SECOND BATTLE OF YPRES - GAS ATTACK

CASTLE DOMAINS WESTHOEK SOUTH

During the remembrance period of the First World War the In Flanders Fields Museum follows the calendar of the military events with
a historical exhibition on those battles. The exhibition this year highlights the Second Battle of Ypres, the Gas Attack from th 22nd of
April 1915. This was the first day that gas was used a weapon of mass destruction in warfare. The front line of the Ypres Salient was
only 4 to 5 km. away from the centre of Ypres in the following months. Before the war, the area around Ypres counted more than 40
castles. There were nearly all destructed in the First World War. This theme is the second part of the exhibition.
This exhibition is free in combination with a visit to the In Flanders Fields Museum.

WALKING CYCLING TOURING

By car...

By cycle...

YPRES SALIENT ROUTE

CYCLING NETWORK OF THE

WESTHOEK

The Ypres Salient

is a curved front
line which formed
around the city
of Ypres in the
First World War. A
tourist car route of
70 kilometres was
mapped out along
that line. This route
will take you to the
most famous sites that remind of the war
years 14-18, such as the John McCrae site,
the German cemetery in Langemarck,
Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passchendaele, the
Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917
in Zonnebeke and Hill 60 in Zillebeke.
The map is available at the
Tourist office for 6.
This route is part of six new routes on
the 14-18 theme in the
region. The others are:
Yser front (Nieuwpoort
and Diksmuide), Front
life (Poperinge and
Heuvelland), Pioneer
(Zonnebeke, Wervik,
Comines and Wervicq
Sud/Fr.), Free Fatherland
(Veurne) and No mans land (Diksmuide
and Langemarck-Poelkapelle).

A cycling network is a series of cycling

paths signposted in both directions. There
is a panel at each intersection stating the
intersection number and the direction
indicator to the next intersections. The
Westhoek cycling network offers almost
1,000 kilometres of cycling enjoyment in
one of the most beautiful touristic regions
of Flanders. There is a map for the North
and one for the South of the Westhoek,
which also includes Ypres.

YPRES SALIENT
The Ypres Salient originated in late
October 1914 when an arc-shaped front
was formed around Ypres. Both sides
dug in and fought from their own
interconnected systems of trenches
and mine shafts. From late May 1915
to early August 1917 the Small Ypres
Salient remained almost unchanged.
Half a million soldiers of more than
50 nationalities died. That made the
Salient one of the most infamous zones
on the Western Front.
On this cycling trip (36 km) you will
discover the frontlines and major relics
in the interesting landscapes of the Ypres
Salient.

PEACE ROUTE
Private battlefield tour companies can be
consulted on www.visit-ypres.com.

16 | YPRES 2015

This 45 km long and entirely signposted

cycling route starts and ends in Ypres.
The route follows the Ypres Salient, the
arched front line around Ypres, and first
takes you to the provincial domain De
Palingbeek and the sites of Hill 60 and
Hill 62. You then proceed to Zonnebeke
and the British Tyne Cot Cemetery. You
then go on to Langemark and to the
German Soldatenfriedhof. The return ride
takes you along Essex Farm Cemetery.
This is where John McCrae wrote his war
poem In Flanders Fields.

Office for 2.

TIP

On foot...
RAMPARTS

The ramparts of Ypres are the best

preserved in our country. Their story
started ten centuries ago when the town
originated on the banks of the Ieperlee.
Initially, the ramparts were little more
than an earth wall with moats. Later stone
walls and towers were added. Later still
they developed into a complex structure
with bastions, advance redoubts, moats
and walls. The signposted route is 2.6
km long and will lead you along a quiet
90 minute walk. Along the route 23
information panels provide information
on the various facets of Vaubans
ramparts.
Free folder available from the Tourist
Office.

HERITAGE FOOTPATH
YPRES

I YPRES
You can discover the rich treasures
of Ypres digitally. The application I
Ypres shows you the Ypres of the past
through original image material on your
smartphone or tablet. This application
takes you on a trip through the city centre
and gives you interesting info.

You will see bronze rivets with the outline

of the Cloth Hall, the cathedral and the
Menin gate at about every street corner.
Bronze rivets are the signposting of the
new provincial heritage footpath.
The heritage footpath is 5.3 km long and
provides the most complete footpath in
the Ypres inner city. Three themes have
been more thoroughly developed in the
brochure. The first relates to the belfry
which is classified as a world heritage
site and the Cloth Hall. The second
theme focuses on the personality of
Arthur Merghelynck. This nobleman
put his stamp on the Hotel of the same
name which now is a museum. A third
perspective illustrates the reconstruction
of the city after the First World War.
Ypres, as a heritage site, is observed from
three perspectives in three different ways.

Office for 2.

violence of World War I left their mark in
the landscape. In the Visitors Centre De

NATURE DOMAIN
Just outside the provincial domain
De Palingbeek you will find Hill 60,
undoubtedly a very important relict
landscape in the Ypres Salient until
present. After the war some 6 acres of
war landscape remained untouched for
years. The terrain has a high natural value
but once was one of the most dramatic
battlefields of the Ypres Salient.
Bordering Hill 60, across the railway, we
discover in De Vierlingen, part of domain
De Palingbeek, the spectacular mine
crater The Caterpillar. Today that mine
crater is an atmospheric, deep pond full
of aquatic life. The Bluff is also more than
worth a visit! The dug out height was
the backdrop to a lethal game of cat-andmouse under and over ground in which
so many soldiers died.
