Tract

Midgut rotation
Primordial gut resides in the base of the
umbilical cord
Gut rotates 270o counterclockwise around
the axis of the omphalomesenteric artery ~
10th week of gestation
After rotation gut returns to abdominal
cavity

Liver development
Liver bud forms as diverticulum off of 2nd
portion of duodenum and branches into
the plexus of veins returning blood from
primordial gut
Proximal segment of bud remains as the
common bile duct
Both common bile duct and main
pancreatic duct enter duodenum at same
site ampulla of Vater

Pancreatic rotation
2 pancreatic diverticuli form on 2nd portion
of duodenum dorsal and ventral buds
Rotation of buds merges them into one
gland
Portion of the ventral bud wraps around
superior mesenteric artery and portal vein
known as uncinate process
