national and international donors and stakeholders.

ESTABLISHING AN E-SCHOOL

During this phase educators are trained in the use of IT as how to use IT for
educational purposes. Throughout the emphasis is not on using technology for
the sake of technology but rather to use it as an educational tool.

ASPECT TO BE NOTED (TECHNOLOGICALMODERNIZATION)

The use of computer technology in schools is indeed amove towards

modernization of schools. In many schools serving remove and poor
communities, the introduction of facilities removes with one foul swoop, the
divide between an ancient way of teaching and a most modern one where
technology is employed optimally.
CREATER EFFECTIVENESS.

Using technology makes the educator far more effective particularly in cases
where educators have to care for huge class group of or more learners. In cases
where educators are under-qualified for the task carefully selected educational
software assists in making the teaching experience more effective.

GREATER RELEVANCE.

The use of technology and in particular resources on the internet makes the
teaching experience far more relevant. The use of resources works very well with
the new outcome based educational paradigm in South Africa

GAUTENG ONLINE LEADS THE WAY FOR ICT IN SCHOOLS.

South African schoolchildren. It is already reality for the majority of Gauteng’s
schools. Gauteng Online project first conceived back is now about to complete.
Schools have access not only to computers but to the wider world as well
through internet access. Gauteng Online aims to provide every school within the
the province with a computer laboratory, giving every learner in the public
schooling system access to the internet and e-mail. The computer laboratories
will have a broader community influence and can be used as delivery hubs for
other government services.

THE GAUTENG ONLINE SCHOOLs PROJECT AIMS TO;

Provide all learners access to quality education.

Through e-learning make notableadvancedin supply skilled learners for further

study and employment which improves South Africa an culture. Democracy
employment and the growth of the economy within the knowledge society.

Provide and ensure that comprehensive sets of curriculum resources and

information across all grade levels and learning areas or subjects in multiple
South African languages

Gauteng Department of Education has learnt some valuable lessons and

incorporated these into the last solution.

To meet the training challenge an internship an programme has been initiated to

deploy unemployed young people to the school laboratories to assist with the
uptake of ICT.

To help overcome the lack of institutional support , a training programme for

school governing bodies and educators has been implemented.

Challenges over a lifetime relates to the changing and improving technology

that’s available.

KHANYA SUMMARY
Empowerment of communities.

Empowerment of communities in different ways.

In a very direct way, communities are involved in literacy as well as ICT literacy
programmes.

An Asssisted community is in the way that they are involved.

In the development of technology facilities.

This empowers them to take ownership of it and ensures sustainability.

Is the scourge of the developing world?

BETTER INTERACTION WITH THE PUBLIC.

Khanya emphasis education but the public in the sense of parents, community
members and other stakeholders are encouraged to be involved. This leads to a
far better interaction between educators, school and other parties.

THE STREAMLINING OF PROCESSES

Educators are more efficient in performing mundane tasks such as the

maintenance of mark sheets and exam results.

Assessment of task can be done electronically, hence freeing up educators to

concentrate on actual teaching rather than having to spend hours and days on
the making of scripts.

Curriculum delivery is enhanced by the use of technology.

Resources such as lesson plans and learning material can be prepared by

experienced educators and used by less experienced ones,

PROMOTES PROFESSIONALISM

The use of technology in schools certainly promotes and enhances the

professionalism of educators.

The quality of teaching is improved dramatically by the use of computer

technology.

CONTINUOUS SUPPORT

It is as a result of this continuous support that Khanya has succeeded where

many similar projects have failed.
