Course Outline for ENGLISH 3201

Students are expected to come to class each day with an English binder/notebook
for notes, seatwork, and homework. While the information below is a general
overview of how the year will look, changes may occur to provide additional
learning opportunities. Please note that beyond the assessments included below,
homework, in-class work, and journals may be assessed throughout the year.
TERM ONE - THEMES OF IDENTITY, RELATIONSHIPS, STRENGTH AND
STRUGGLE:
As your year begins, please note that The Catcher in the Rye or A Separate Peace
will be a whole group read, followed by a film study of The Secret Life of Bees, and
in term two an independent read using the following title options: The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn , Blank Confession, Dracula, The Eternal Smile, Face-Off, The
Fellowship of the Ring, Heist Society, Iron Heart, Juba Good, Life of Pi, Miss
Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children, North of Beautiful, The Secret Life of Bees,
A Separate Peace, Standing Tall: My Journey, The Stone Angel, , Schindlers List ,
Tuesdays With Morrie, Trapped, We Were Liars, Wintergirls, Waiting for Time.

Students will be immediately provided with a copy of The Catcher in the Rye
or A Separate Peace to be read independently by Oct. 10th, 2015.

Students will also begin to choose a topic and gather information for the
Research Paper component of the course. Submission dates will be
staggered for topic, outline, reference page, peer edit, paper. The full
paper must be completed by the end of term one. It will not be

where the goal is to make arguments that may end with a call to action;
one approach could be to find an editorial and write a letter to the editor

***All three OPTIONS should be passed in as a small portfolio of work, with two of
the items being rough drafts that show your knowledge of the essay type, with the
third item being a polished copy that will be marked and then used as your SPEECH
(peer evaluation and self-evaluation to follow).
