Assignment 1

Part A: Field Component
This exercise consists of supervising the actual installation of a monitoring well on
Conestoga College property. You will be required to complete the following tasks:
- log the stratigraphy
- record blow counts
- visually identify the soil samples
- bag and label the split spoon samples
- inform the driller of the well construction details
- document well installation details
- record the quantity of various well materials used
Part B: Written Component
Fully complete the following:
i) CRA forms SP15, 15A, 16 (check off the items which you actually did in red ink and
which ones I did in blue ink) (5 marks)
ii) CRA form SP 18 (5 marks)
iii) Prepare the borehole log using Winlog. Borehole logs shall be in SI units. Winlog
software is available in all labs (20 marks)
You should complete this assignment in groups of 3. (One submission per group).
However note that I require all students to individually complete the borehole logs on their
own. Therefore the submission package should include ONE copy of forms SP15, SP15A,
SP16, SP18 AND THREE individually completed borehole logs (ie. Part iii above). The
borehole logs should be noticeably different.
Note that this assignment will be revisited in January once we have studied
methods to describe soil types, so hang onto this assignment once it is returned.
