The Great Gatsby Chapter 4 Review Question

1. Since most guests ignore him, why do they come to Gatsbys house?

They come to the party because of the free food, alcohol, and gossip.
(Party)
2. In the list of the guests, what further indication is there that the old money is in East Egg

and the new money in West Egg?

The people from West Egg made their money in the entertainment
business and gambling. The East Eggers are old money. Doctors, good
schools, very WASP (White Anglo Saxon Protestant)
3. Why Nick is a little disappointed with Gatsby?

Nick is disappointed because Gatsby has very little to say. It is difficult

for Nick to get to know him.
4. Why does Nick have to restrain his laughter when Gatsby says he is . . . trying to forget

something very sad that had happened to me a long time ago?

At this point Nick doubts what Gatsby is saying and wants to laugh at
the way Gatsby is speaking. Gatsby sounds like a bad romance novel.
5. What does this conversation reveal about Gatsby?

This conversation reveals that Gatsby is a phony. Gatsby is a phony

because he lies about the stories. He tells Nick he is from the Midwest
which Nick followed up and asked where he was from and he said San
Francisco which is by the Pacific Ocean in California. (see homework
from 11/2/11)

6. Why does Nick say that listening to Gatsby was like skimming hastily though a dozen

magazines?
He is telling Nick his life story. He went on and on and was not specific
and sounded
as if it was made up.
7. What changes Nicks mind about the truthfulness of Gatsbys stories?

The proof he carries with him. The medal from Montenegro and the
photo of him
at Oxford University in England
8. Who is Meyer Wolfsheim, and what do we know of him?

He is a gangster who fixed the 1919 World Series. He and Gatsby are
in business (illegal) together.

9. With the line, One October day. . . Jordan recalls that time in 1917 that she saw Gatsby
and Daisy together. What indication is there that Daisy really likes Gatsby?
Daisy was so into G that she did not notice Jordan until Jordan was five
feet from the car. After Gatsby left Daisy attempted to go after him, but
her mother stopped
her. She only dates men who are not in the army.
Then meets Tom and agrees to
marry him.
10. How does Daisy behave the night before her wedding? Why?

Daisy receives a letter from Gatsby and she gets drunk. She says she
not going to marry Tom, but she does anyway.
11. To what is Nick referring when he says, Then it had not been merely the stars to which
he [Gatsby] had aspired on the June night? The night that Nick first sees G. G, is
standing with his arms outstretched to the green light (Daisy) Nick now
understands that Gatsby was reaching toward Daisy.
12. What is happening in the relationship between Nick and Jordan? They are dating.
She is not Miss Right she is Miss Right NOW.
