Efficiency
For droplet size

Droplet size is directly proportional to efficiency (keeping the same velocity

and liquid and gas composition).
For strand diameter or corrugation spacing
The smaller the diameter of a mesh strand, the more abruptly oncoming gas
turns aside, and the more difficult it is for mist droplets to follow the gas.
Thus, finer strands can
For gas velocity
Capture efficiency of a mist eliminator increases sharply with velocity until an
upper limit is reached due to re-entrainment or flooding.
Liquid density relative to gas density
In cases where the gas is nearly as dense as the liquid for instance, at high
pressuresthe gas sweeps droplets around the obstacle more strongly,
preventing capture.
Gas viscosity
The more viscous the gas, the more drag it exerts on suspended droplets as
the gas flows around mesh strands, leading to reduced capture efficiency.

Pad density and thickness

Thicker, denser pads bring trade-offs in terms of higher pressure drop and
susceptibility to re-entrainment and flooding.
Effect of void fraction
The separation efficiency is enhanced clearly as the void fraction is
decreased.

Fouling applications
Mild fouling:
Install a water spray system below the mist eliminator for occasional
inline cleaning
Consistent fouling:
Install Vane mist eliminator upstream of the mesh mist eliminator

Considerations

To obtain minimum pressure drop, maximum throughput, and maximum

efficiency, the support grids must have a high percentage of free passage. To
take full advantage of the 98% or so free volume in the wire-mesh, the free
passage through the support grids should be greater than 90%. If the free
passage through the support grids is much below 90%, the accumulated
liquid is prevented from draining back through the support grids, causing
premature flooding.
