Introduction
Statistics is the organization, analysis, and
interpretation of data gathered. Statistical
methods can be applied in a wide variety of
scientific, social, and business endeavors. In
science it is important in analyzing data
from the experiments done and provides a
way to draw a reliable conclusion. It can be
used to for finding correlations, comparisons
and associations between the variables being
tested. Statistics can be separated into 2,
non-parametric and parametric. Parametric
statistics involve sample data from a
population that follows a probability
distribution and set parameters while non
parametric is the opposite. It involves data
which does not follow a probability
distribution and that the data is often ordinal
Problem
Set K
A DENR official was alerted to the presence
of a leak in the pipeline of a pesticide
factory that was slowly releasing pesticide
by-products into a nearby creek. Although
the pesticide company issued a statement
that the leaked material was non-toxic, the
official went to the site and collected water
samples from the start of the leak upstream
all the way to the end of the creek, at 10
meter intervals. He also counted the number
of guppies at each collecting site. Each
water sample was analyzed for the presence

and amount of the pesticide by-product at

the lab. The results obtained are as follows:

Methodology
The problem involved nonparametric values
and test for correlation between two
variables. Spearmans rank correlation was
used to determine the correlation between
the amount of pesticide and the number of
guppies found.
Spearmans Rank correlation coefficient

named after Charles Spearman

Used to identify and test the strength

of a relationship between two sets of
data. It is often used as a statistical
method to aid with either proving or
disproving a hypothesis.

Ho: There is no correlation between the

concentration of the pesticide and the
number of guppies
Ha: There is a correlation between the ppm
and the number of guppies.

Conclusion
We reject the null hypothesis, since the
rs=-0.6752, the group therefore presume that
the leaked material may be toxic that caused
the guppies death because there is negative
correlation between two groups.
