The Medical Assistant Program is a 12 or 25* week curriculum which consists of


both front and back office training (a minimum of 500 hours of instructional time)
plus a minimum of 200 hours of externship. Every student is expected to
meet all course requirements before being eligible for completion.

REQUIREMENTS:
A High School Diploma (or OFFICIAL transcripts) or GED certificate is REQUIRED.
Students must bring their high school diploma or GED certificate a week
prior to the start of class. If diploma is not available before the start of
class student will be dropped from the program.
If you do not have a high school diploma or GED or have transcripts from another
country please speak with Brian Ofner our Academic Counselor in the main office.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of the Medical Assistant Program is to provide students with the
appropriate educational theory and hands-on skills required and necessary to
prepare them for entry-level positions as an Administrative/Clinical Medical
Assistant. Students will study the structure and functions of the major body
systems in conjunction with medical terminology, diagnostic and therapeutic
procedures.

missed. Work not turned in on time will not receive full credit **
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
Must be brought to class EACH DAY.
Blood pressure kit which includes a Stethoscope and a Sphygmomanometer, a
watch with a second hand, pen, pencil, paper and highlighters

program. American Heart Association offers this class or you can take it here at
Downey Adult School for $59*, if you have not already taken it.

CLASSROOM DRESS CODE:
ALL WHITE UNIFORM ONLY, WITH SCHOOL LOGO. School ID badge MUST be worn
at all times while on campus. Your appearance is to be respectful (professional) at all
times.
NO facial jewelry allowed (pierced nose, eyebrow, lip, etc)
Women- Hair must be up, hair color must be neutral/natural tone, only small
stud earrings and 1 plain ring/band may be worn, no artificial nails, no colored
nail polish, NO perfume/cologne, NO scented lotions.
Men- Clean shaven, hair must be neat, hair color must be neutral/natural
tone, and 1 plain ring/band may be worn. NO cologne, NO scented lotions.

**Students that do not follow dress code will be dismissed from class
and therefore marked absent for that day **
PROFESSIONALISM:
Students must be professional at ALL times with instructors, classmates and staff.
Any abusive language, harassment, threats, or intimidation will NOT BE
TOLERATED!
Students that do not follow the professionalism code will be
dismissed from class and therefore absent and, after counseling, may be dismissed
from the program/school.
STUDENT PERFORMANCE:
Student must maintain a minimum of 75% average, per module, throughout the
entire program.
90% and above=A, 80% - 89%=B, 75% - 79%=C, Grades of 74% or less are failing
ATTENDANCE:
The programs are divided into modules. In the 25 week program there are five/five
week modules. In the 12 week program there are six/two week modules. Students
are expected to attend class every class session. Make-up work will only be
allowed with instructors prior approval. Class starts on time! Arriving after the
start time means you are late. If you arrive after 30 minutes from the start of
class you will be marked ABSENT! If you leave earlier than 45 minutes before the
end of class you will be marked ABSENT! Students will be expected to make up
any missed class time
12 week program:
2 tardies/leave early = 1 absence
2 absences = FAIL and repeating of that module
1 absence per module ONLY
(ANYTHING over 1 absence is failing; this includes tardiness and/or leave earlies)
25 week program:
3 tardies/leave early = 1 absence
3 absences = FAIL and the repeating of that module
2 absences per module ONLY
(ANYTHING over 2 absences is failing; this includes tardiness and/or leave earlies)

FAILING/REPEATING MODULES:
You must pass each and every module successfully by completing all course
required hours and meet grades, in order to be eligible to go onto externship. The
cost of the program is $2999*, each module is: 12 week program $499.83, 25 week
program $599.80.
FINANCIAL AID:
DAS offers financial aid through FAFSA. Please read the following information
carefully:
To save your seat in the class you will need to register and pay your deposit even if
you are applying for financial aid. Once you have registered in the program, an
appointment will be scheduled to meet with the Financial Aid department in Room
H-61 upon receipt of High School Diploma or GED certificate. For an appointment
see Liz Villalobos in J93.
Apply for financial aid at the following website
www.fafsa.ed.gov. Our school code is 005638. Financial Aid cannot be
processed without a high school diploma/official transcripts/GED
evaluation. Make sure you provide a diploma, official transcripts, or GED
documentation upon registration.

TWO (2) DAYS IN A MODULE
YOUR FINANCIAL AID WILL BE SUSPENDED ***
Please be advised that if for any reason your financial aid is not approved,
you will be held responsible for any balances due.
PAYMENTS:
You are required to make payments every module so that by the time you are
finished you will have paid off your balance. Even if you are on Financial Aid it is
strongly recommended that you make payments every module.

EXTERNSHIP:
Preparation will begin during the students last module, contingent on the student
meeting grades and attendance standards, having completed a minimum of 500
hours of classroom instruction and the class fee is paid in full. Student MUST
start externship within 30 days of completing their last module, failure to
do so will result in a mandatory lab review with a fee of $250*. A minimum 200
hours of externship are REQUIRED. Students are placed based on facility
availability and student/facility compatibility to be determined by the placement
coordinator. Students are not promised a facility of their choice but we will work
with students to accommodate requests. Externship placement does not always
happen the 1st day after completing the training program; this is on a case by case
basis based on student and site availability.
If for any reason you need to be re-sited (sent to another site), a fee of
$250* will be applied.

ALL BALANCES MUST BE PAID IN FULL BEFORE YOU CAN BE SENT FOR
EXTERNSHIP.
It is the students responsibility to schedule an appointment for
externship one month prior to the completion of their program.
STUDENT TRANSFERS:
Student transfers to or from the Medical Assistant program to another program at
Downey Adult School must be approved by the instructor and the Director of the
program. If the student is receiving assistance from an agency, the student may
need to get permission from that agency. Once approved, a new registration must
be completed. If the student transfers within the first week of classes the pro-rated
deposit will be transferred. If the transfer occurs after the first week the deposit will
be prorated based on the amount of time in the program plus books and supplies.
The Medical Assistant program does NOT accept educational credits from other
institutions.
REFUNDS:
Student MUST have a receipt. Refunds will only be accepted within the first three
(3) days of class. Keep in mind that if you receive books and attend class your
refund will be prorated. A 15% processing fee also applies. All refunds must be
requested in writing in the main office.
