    TheRijketubeisaninterestingexampleofanopencylinder
    resonator.Foldsofcopperscreenarepositionedaboutone
    fifthofthewayupthetube.Whenthescreenisheatedina
    burnerflameandthenmovedtoonesideoftheflame,itwill
    produceastrongtoneatitsresonantfrequencyforseveral
    seconds.Thestandardexplanationhastotowiththeeaseof
    excitationofasystematitsresonantfrequency.Theairwhich
    passesupthroughtheredhotscreenisheatedandexpands,
    producingapulseofairtowardthecenterofthepipe.Likea
    pushwhichraisesamassonaspringaboveitsequilibrium
    position,thatpulseofairwillstartthesystemintooscillation
    atitsnaturalfrequency.Notefromthevideoclipthatthe
    excitationofthepipedependsuponthechimneyeffectofair
    movingupthepathandthesoundstopswhenthetubeis
    turnedhorizontal.

    steel.

    Whilethecopperscreeniselasticenoughtoholditself
    inplacewhenitisnew,itquicklylosesits"springiness"
    afterafewheatingsandjustdropsout.Thecopper
    screensdonotlastlonginanycase,developingahole
    inthecenterafteracoupleofdozenheatings.
    Ausefuldemonstrationsetisthreepipesconstructed
    withlengthratios4:5:6sothatyoucandemonstratethe
    musicalprogressionofamajortriad.

    Sincethetubescoolquicklyafterbeingmovedofftheflameofthelaboratoryburner,the
