MMA Politics
By: Chris du Toit (Octagon MMA, South Africa)
We have all heard the expression keep your nose on your face, which basically comes down to dont
meddle in affairs that don't concern you. And if everyone would just adhere to this simple piece of
advice, the world would be a better place to live in. We would have no wars, no thieves, no hostile
takeovers, no kidnappings, no politics, and no politicians (Hell Yes!). But unfortunately no one can be
bothered with honoring this rule, so we have politics in every family, business and organization in
existence. MMA is no exception; we have a fair amount of politics at every level of the sport, from club
level, up to international events. The question is, how do you handle the politics on your level, in your
club, organization, region or country? How involved should you be and should you be involved at all?
Well if you were expecting a simple yes or no answer to that question, you are going to be sadly
disappointed, because the answer to that is as complex as the politics itself. The trick however is to
limit your involvement and distance yourself just enough not to make yourself the target. Nothing
bitters up the sweet taste of MMA quite like having to fend off accusations and attacks from the rest of
the MMA community. It will make you feel unwelcome at seminars, events and meetings and soon you
will be treated like a leper which will, of course, hurt your business. So if it becomes absolutely
unavoidable to not get involved and you find yourself smack in the middle of a huge MMA politics
dispute, what should you do?
Put on a pair of 4oz gloves, grab your mouth guard and head over to the source of the dispute... and
you should be in prison by the end of the day, fighting off your new fiance , a 300 pound Nigerian
gangster named Bubba. The trick to surfing the politic wave, should it come your way is to stay
calm, diplomatic and stick to the facts. (Yes I know, thats not in my nature either and I might choose to
take my chances with Bubba too). Most of these disputes have a way of sorting themselves out, and if
you were not in the wrong this might actually strengthen your position in the organization. Plus you got
some free publicity!

INDUSTRY ADVICE
MMA Politics
By: Chris du Toit (Octagon MMA, South Africa)
MMA is still very new on the block, and we are the pioneers of this beautiful sport. What we do now
will be the foundation for many generations of coaches and fighters. Building bitter rivalries now will
not only damage the image of MMA, which is still misunderstood by a huge sector of the population,
but also divide us in a time that we should be unified and moving forward. If all else fails and
negotiations and diplomacy lead nowhere, MMA has a unique advantage over most other
organizations...We have an Octagon...
So this month, I conclude my article not with a summary of industry advice given, but rather with a
request. Let us settle our differences, lets lay this foundation, lets build MMA, and lets close this fist
with all five fingers rolled in. Let us stand together and turn this into the greatest game the world has
ever seen! Happy training, and remember, Never Back Down!!!

The pain was excruciating, shooting up and down my leg, unlike anything I had ever felt before. It
stopped me dead in my tracks. It wasnt Jose Aldos kicks doing to my leg what Rocky Balboa does to
a side of beef.
It was relentless, everything I tried only seemed to amplify the pain and every movement only
tightened the grip it had on me. It wasnt Demian Maia turning me into a pretzel against my will.
As a 31 year old who spends 8 hours a day in front of a computer helping people process paperwork,
I will most likely never appear under the bright lights of the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Hell, I dont
know if I will get myself in front of 200 people at the Shriners Auditorium.
However, last January I went three tough rounds with the toughest opponent most of us who spend
any time on the mat will ever have to face. I went three rounds.of antibiotics with MRSAand won.
For those of you who are fortunate enough not to know, Methicillin-resistant-Staphylococcus Aureus or
MRSA, is a particularly virulent strain of staph infection which is becoming increasingly common in the
general population but especially so among grapplers. It sucks.
MRSA is spread by skin to skin contact and roughly three out of every ten people carry it. In most
cases the bacteria is completely harmless and kept in check by your bodies immune system.
However, for those who become infected it is extremely dangerous and can be fatal.
For me the infection started as a small bump which looked like a zit that had become a bit to big for its
own good. As she did with any zit that I had, my girlfriend at the time tried to pop it(READ: HUGE
MISTAKE). After twenty minutes of biting down on a towel with my eyes rimmed with tears, we
decided that maybe this was not a zit.

By the time the morning had come along the zit had turned into a golf ball sized hard abscess
surrounded by a Nerf football sized area of pink infection. It caused me pain I wouldnt wish on
anyoneexcept maybe that ex girlfriend who tried to pop it(you know who you are and you know
what you did). I decided to see the first doctor who would take me, who as it turned out could have
used more medical school. No cultures were taken and no blood drawn. I was prescribed an antibiotic
and after a few days the outbreak had cleared up.
About a week after treatment I decided it would be a good time to return to the mat but I saw a small
red bump on a spot about five inches from the original. Not wanting to infect anyone at my academy
with the torture I went through, I decided that I would keep an eye on it for another day. Sure enough,
the next day it had blown up again and I was in agonizing pain. Luckily for me, in between outbreaks I
had gotten a Primary Care Physician who had luxuries like actual medical training and access to
modern medicine. He sent me to a specialist who correctly identified my infection as MRSA and
proscribed a newer more powerful antibiotic which I was to take for 2 weeks. In addition to the
antibiotics, I was to apply a warm compress several times a day and painfully drain whatever bloody
puss that I cold.
The interesting thing about MRSA is that it has a way of really making itself at home in your body,
specifically your nose. MRSA will colonize your nose on a cellular level, meaning that antibiotics
taken orally will knock out the infection where it is, but that as long as it lives in your nose, it will likely
regroup and spread over your body waiting for a scratch or an abrasion and strike again. Near the
end of the course of my antibiotics I began to take a second antibioticnasally.
My treatment didnt end there. To make sure that the bacteria didnt fester in my leg , I underwent a
minor surgery to drain the wound. My leg was shot with Novocaine, an incision was made, and the
remaining puss squeezed out. The Novocaine did not help. The doctor inserted a length of gauze in
my leg, which I was to slowly yank out the next day.once again not an awesome feeling. For the
next several weeks I had an open wound on my thigh. I had to bathe the wound in an Epsom salt
solution several times a day and keep reopening it to make sure that it didnt heal too quickly on the
top which would allow the bacteria to thrive underneath.
I missed almost 3 weeks of work and close to two months of training, but I was lucky. I caught it early
and had access to the medical treatment I needed to get well. Not everyone is so fortunate. I am
reminded of it every time I take a shower and look down to see the Eye of Mordor shaped scar I have
on my leg. It has made me much more aware of the unseen dangers of grappling and more vigilant in
guarding against them.
While there is no way to guarantee that you won't contract MRSA short of getting off the mat entirely,
there are things you can do to limit your exposure.
First of all, do yourself and your teammates a favor, if you have strange looking bump, rash,
etc. STAY OFF THE MAT.

INDUSTRY ADVICE
You know your body, if something doesnt look right, go see a doctor ASAP.
Make sure that your training equipment, uniform, and mat space are clean and washed
regularly.
GO HOME! For many of us, the people we train with become our friends or our family and we
spend time after class just shooting the shit, watching the next class, discussing techniques.
You should be taking a shower as quickly as possible after your training is over.
MRSA has a way of hiding on your body in skin folds and places where the sun dont shine,
so make sure to give a little extra attention to areas such as your groin, arm pits, and the
crack of your.well you know. For you heavyweights this includes the jelly rolls you spent so
much time to acquire.
There are anti-bacterial body washes you can buy which have Triclosan in them which has
been known to lower the population of staph bacteria in institutional settings. The extra benefit
of using these body washes is that they come in great scents like Lavender and Mountain
Jasmine which mask our own horrible stench and make us less revolting to women.
Additionally there is a a surgical scrub called Hibiclens available at drugs stores which I use
on the main gathering spots that I mentioned earlier.
When showering you should use the hottest water you can stand. Now since most of you are
like me, and your idea of fun is wrestling with sweaty men who are trying to tear your arms off,
its safe to say you are not that bright. The hottest water you can stand doesnt mean standing
under boiling water till your skin starts to bubble.plain old hot water will work just fine.
Hopefully you can learn from my mistakes and take precautions that I should have taken years ago.
You will find that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Good Training and Good Luck!

The Chael Sonnen Show, formerly known as UFC 117 sold nearly a million pay per views. Optimistic
pre-fight estimates of UFC 117 pay per view buys ranged from 300,000 to 500,000. In short, Chael
Sonnen's pre-fight antics sold half a million pay per views, or more. I, for one, was compelled to see if
Sonnen would back up his big mouth. The dude certainly talked a lot of trash.
Sonnens example raises the question of why many UFC contenders, especially those receiving a
percentage of pay per view sales, do not attempt to similarly sell a fight. Perhaps some fighters
regard the use of professional wrestling techniques as inconsistent with traditional martial arts ethos.
And it may be that no one but Chael Sonnen can mimic Sonnens shtick, which included, for no
apparent reason, an overhand right to the Nogeira brothers jiu jitsu credentials that proved to be
among the most famous of last words.
MMA blogger Brent Brookhouse already pondered the issue:
In the same way as the first point we come to a sport vs. spectacle crossroads where
one can only wonder if a successful buyrate means a forced build or if the UFC will
continue to let fights be built around the true personalities of the fighters in the event
and the fight itself while feeding off of natural bad blood on occasion. What makes
Georges St. Pierre's buy-rates so good aren't his willingness to say anything and
everything he can think of, it is the desire of the fans to see the best doing what they
do. Is that the future? Or is the future in creating characters for the sake of
manufacturing interest.
Fortunately, we dont have to choose. Mixed martial arts accommodates all types of fighting styles
within the cage and all types of personalities without. Rampage, Genki Sudo, the Barncat, Nick Diaz,
Korean Zombie, Don Frye, Sakuraba, Penn, Mayhem, and many more. Individuals, all, possessing
distinctive personas and unique fighting styles. Their clash of personas and styles compels us to
watch, sometimes more strongly than others. But come fight night the fighters alone are accountable
to each other for their spoken words and pre-fight actions. The in-cage clash is always real, and
ultimately thats why we watch.

It is often true that the greatness inside of a man is never fully brought to light until it is drawn from him
by confronting the greatness of another. It is only when subduing an opponent so powerful or
overcoming an obstacle so insurmountable as to seem impossible that legends are made. David had
Goliath. Hector had Achilles. James Toney has annunciation, grammar and pie(is he more of a bad
ass because he speaks the same language as me and I still need an interpreter to understand a
single word he says?) On August 7th in Oakland, California Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva had
one another.
The UFC Middleweight Title fight was one of the most highly anticipated of the year, for reasons that
had almost nothing to do with the fight itself, the result of which most fans felt was a foregone
conclusion. People were tuning in to see how the enigmatic Silva, whose performances had been
alternating between brilliance and buffoonery, would punish Sonnen for the Vesuvius of smack talk he
had been spewing for weeks leading up to the fight.
Going into the fight Silva was on a record setting win streak, blazing a trail of destruction through the
UFCs middleweight division. He was considered by many to be the best pound for pound fighter on
earth and by nearly everyone as the most dangerous. Silva is a transcendent striker who effortlessly
combines flawless technical excellence with coma-inducing power. Through 11 UFC fights Silva had
lost only a single round and hadnt lost a fight in over four and a half years.
Despite coming into the fight on a three fight winning streak, including notable wins over Nate
Marquardt and Yushin Okami, Sonnen was still something of an unknown quantity. It seemed to many
that his greatest attribute was his mouth and that the words that came out of it were far more
impressive than his 25-10-1 record. Sonnens 2009 UFC return saw him lose in Submission of the
Night fashion to Demian Maia, who Silva toyed with just four months earlier.
What most fight aficionados failed to take into account was that Sonnen was bringing more than his
mouth to the fight. He was bringing in the perfect skill set to stifle Silvas all world striking. Often
overlooked in Silvas UFC run is that only once had he faced a fighter with Sonnens wrestling
credentials. Dan Henderson was the only fighter to previously take a round from the Spider before
succumbing as much to his love affair with his own right hand as Andersons rear naked choke.

When the cage door closed, Sonnen did exactly what he said he would do. He got in Silvas face and
pressured him from the onset. Amid cries of Silva, Silva Sonnen landed the first big blow of the fight
rocking the champion just 47 seconds in. Surprisingly, the first take down of the fight was scored by
Silva with at the 3:47 mark. Sonnen quickly scrambled to his feet and got a take down of his own 24
second later. It was a take down the champion would take time to recover from. For the remainder of
the round Sonnen brutalized Silva with a relentless barrage of ground and pound from top control en
route to a 10-8 round.
Just ten seconds into the second round the champion once again found himself on his back trying to
fend off Sonnen, who continued to push the pace, never giving the champion a reprieve from the
onslaught. For the next three plus rounds the challenger dominated the champion in a way rarely seen
in a title fight. For four rounds Sonnen did to Silva what the Brazilian had done to his 11 previous UFC
opponents. The fight followed a pattern of brief stand up exchanges followed by a Sonnen take down
and stifling top control.
If you watched closely enough you could see something remarkable on the champions face. It was not
the exasperated look of despair which you so often see on a fighter who has been so thoroughly
suffocated by a world class wrestler. It was a relaxed look of composure that was unnerving to behold.
He took all that Sonnen had to give and waited. Several times through out the battle Sonnen was a bit
too lax with his arms and Silva pounced, but each time the challenger shrugged off the submission
attempt and continued to rain shots down upon the champion.
Entering the fifth round the challenger had a seemingly insurmountable lead. One judge seeing it so
lopsided as to score it 40-34. Rather than bank his lead, he realized that Silva was too dangerous a
fighter to give any space to. Sonnen continued to fight the only way he knew how. He took Silva
down and continued to grind down the champion looking to finish off the Spider and walk away with
the title firmly around his waist.
With two minutes remaining in the fight and Sonnen once again on top of him, Silva did what
champions do, he found away to win. Weary, battered, but not beaten he caught Sonnen off guard
and went for the Triangle Choke. Nine second later the fight was over and Silva had a record breaking
12th consecutive UFC victory.
It was a night that showed once again it is styles that make fights and that its the circumstances that
make the man. It is cliche to say that in this fight nobody was the loser.but its true. Sometimes it is
not in victory or defeat that we find greatness or meaning , but in the struggle itself. Both men couldnt
walk away from the cage the champion but they both could walk with their heads held high, knowing
that the battle they left behind would be the stuff of MMA legend.
