Amanda Anges, 16, has been chosen by the Humane Society of the United States as their 2006
Humane Teen of the Year. She has volunteered at the Animal Welfare Society in Springvale,
Maine, since she was 13. Now she works there, helping to care for the animals. She also teaches
kids how to take care of and be kind to animals. As a volunteer at the shelter, she has done a lot
of cleaning up after the animals. She has also walked and played with them and photographed
them for the shelters Web site. Now as a technician, she has worked mostly with cats, bathing
them, giving them medicine, and vaccinating them before people adopt them.
She sometimes brings animals to a local childrens museum and teaches children how to care for
them. She has taught at the animal shelters summer camp for kids, too. Amanda is a vegetarian
