Introduction
Sport Management is an exciting degree that will help you develop your career in
the sport industry. It has been designed to meet the industrys need for wellqualified managers who can combine management and financial skills with
specialist knowledge of sport. The course will help you acquire the necessary
knowledge, understanding and skills to enable reflective management practice in
a range of sport settings.

Course objectives
The course will help you acquire the necessary knowledge, understanding and
skills to enable reflective management practice in a range of sport settings.
Throughout the course you will be challenged to evaluate the dynamic
environment in which sport organisations in the public, commercial and voluntary
sectors strive to flourish, and to apply your developing knowledge and
management skills to meet the inherent sport management challenges.
Taught by staff with consultancy and research experience, this MSc reflects the
current industry trends and employer needs. Your studies will include: strategic
management, finance, research methods, professional practice and integrated
sport management studies. You will also have the opportunity to widen or deepen
your knowledge through selection of two option modules.

On successful completion you will be able to:

identify and evaluate recent changes in sport participation and policies,


and their implications for sport management practices.

apply management theory to the context of managing sport organisations.

conduct research into sport issues relevant to managing and developing


sport organisations and events.

INTO University of Stirling offers a Graduate Diploma for those students who do
not meet the required criteria for this course. If you successfully complete
the Graduate Diploma in Business, Finance and Sport and meet the required
progression grades, you will be guaranteed entry onto this Master's degree.
English language requirements
If English is not your first language you must have one of the following
qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:

Structure and teaching
You can study either full-time or part-time to Postgraduate Certificate,
Postgraduate Diploma or MSc levels.
You must attain 180 SCQF points to be awarded an MSc in Sport Management.
You will achieve this by successfully completing the following modules:

You will have the chance to work on case studies, learn from people in the
business and to develop specific interests through a research dissertation.

Delivery and assessment

Management concepts and theories will be delivered through traditional lecturing


methods. Theory will be applied to practice through case study analysis,
discussion with sport management practitioners, seminars and research. You will
acquire softer management skills such as problem-solving, team-working,
leadership, analysis, evaluation and presentation through a range of learning
activities, and which are essential if you are to become an effective manager. The
modules are assessed by coursework only and designed to encourage students to
link theory to professional practice.

Recommended reading
Students will only be expected to purchase three to four key texts for the course
relating to key management principles and relevant research methodologies. In
addition to core texts, reading will be supplemented with relevant and
contemporary (empirical) journal articles. Students with little knowledge of sport

As Scotlands University for Sporting Excellence we are closely aligned with many
sports organisations and have formal links with a growing number of

Sport and Physical Activity.

This course is delivered by a team of highly qualified academics with experience

transition having studied a different, though related, subject at undergraduate

This course is designed to build on your previous sport or business management
studies and experience, and equip you with the skills needed for a career in

sports management. Your studies have a global perspective on the sports


industry and are enhanced through links with internationally and nationally
significant sport organisations and Sheffield's major sports venues and events.
Course description
The rapid globalisation of the sports market, the influence of technology on
product research and development and new business models, foreign direct
investment in the sports industry supply chain, and the provision of sport related
goods and services for increasingly sophisticated and diverse market segments
are all contributing to the continued growth of the sports industry.
Rapid growth in the volume and variety of sports publications, sports-related
internet sites, and enhanced mass media exposure of sports events and activities
is resulting in an increase in the need for individuals with a knowledge of sport
communications/media.
Global industrialisation, urbanisation and lifestyle and demographic changes
mean that governments and public agencies worldwide are likely to increasingly
use sport as a tool for social policy and economic and social development. The
management and administration of these programmes and interventions require
specific knowledge and management skills.

Your studies are made up of eight assessed modules, which include an industrybased research project in which you work with sport organisations to develop

renowned Sport Industry Research Centre.

Normally a first degree 2:2 or above in a sport-related or business and
management-related subject
OR a first degree 2:2 or above in an unrelated subject, but with experience of
working in sport or general business and management.
We welcome enquiries from those who have substantial management experience
but who do not have the normal entry requirements. We may invite you for an
interview to discuss your particular background, experience and qualifications.
Our aim is to ensure you can achieve success on this masters course, but please
contact us if you wish to discuss your own concerns.
Through accreditation of prior learning (APL), students may claim entry with
credit or exemptions on the basis of their existing qualifications, knowledge and
experience.
If English is not your first language you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a
minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or a recognised equivalent. If your level of English
language is currently below IELTS 6.0 we recommend you consider an appropriate
Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to
achieve the required level of English.

Course structure
The course is made up of eight core modules, plus a research or work-based
learning project. Modules provide a broad grounding across management
disciplines in sport business. Most teaching is in small groups of typically less
than 20 people, allowing for close interaction between students and academic
staff.
Core modules
Researching sport management (15 credits)
This module develops your research and analytical skills so that you are equipped
to carry out effective research in order to better understand and identify issues
and solutions in sport management.
International sports marketing and the media (15 credits)
As a sports manager, you will need the marketing knowledge and skills to
respond to rapidly-changing consumer needs and want. This module develops
your understanding of planning, marketing, branding, consumer behaviour and
media communications theories and frameworks to enable you to consider
marketing from a strategic standpoint.
Global economics of sport (15 credits)
You analyse the national and international economic structure of the sports
industry. You examine the global demand for televised coverage of sports events
and endorsements and the impact of these factors on the economic significance
and development of the industry.
International sports strategy (15 credits)
This module develops your understanding of critical trends in the global sports
industry, and the factors which underlie these trends to equip you to manage and
lead at the strategic level in sport organisations. The module will provide the
opportunity to analyse the strategy and performance of international sport
businesses, federations and organisations in some detail, allowing you to apply
theory to real life in order to develop strategic solutions to complex management
issues.
Managing people in sport organisations (15 credits)
Todays sport organisations use work groups or teams to manage work. You
develop the skills needed to be an effective manager and team member such as
negotiation conflict resolution motivation assertiveness.
Sport business consultancy (15 credits)
This module offers you the opportunity to build upon the skills you developed in
the researching sport management module by completing a live group
consultancy research project for a sport organisation, and in the process learning
about the nature of consultancy within the global sports industry. The module will
help you understand issues within consultancy, and the issues and context
involved in acting as consultants and also in using consultants within
organisations. The module will expose you to relevant consultancy skills and
tools.
International sport event management (15 credits)

You will develop a comprehensive understanding of international sport event


management by examining current professional practice in sport event
management. You will explore relevant contemporary issues in the sport event
industry referring to appropriate international case studies and examples.
Financial skills for business decisions (15 credits)
This module provides you with the opportunity to systematically and creatively
apply financial techniques to make decisions about complex management
problems. Throughout the module you will develop a critical understanding of
financial decision making tools and techniques to solve practical situations and
manage change.

Research project (60 credits)
You complete a research project or an applied support project which gives you
the flexibility to tailor the study to your own interests or needs. We assign tutors
to supervise your project based on their research and consultancy expertise.
Work based learning project (60 credits)
You are placed within a sport organisation for 12 weeks to complete a work based
project for the host organisation. You enhance your experience in the sport
industry, your personal and professional skills and benefit the organisation that
you work within. The module will enable you demonstrate your ability to learn
independently, apply relevant methods of enquiry to sport management; and
enable you to critically reflect and make judgements on theory, policy and
practice. The module takes place in the workplace and you will be supported by a
member of academic staff and a workplace mentor from the host organisation.
Course support
Before you start the course, we supply you with an induction pack that includes a
reading list to introduce you to the general management and specialist modules.
We also run an induction programme to prepare you for the course.
During the induction we assess your existing study, IT and language (for
international students) skills. This assessment leads to an individual learning plan
to improve and develop your skills. We also provide language tuition as needed, if
your first language is not English. Dissertation workshops help you to prepare for
your dissertation.
Employability
Graduates of this course have skills that can be applied to commercial, public and
non-profit organisations, with career opportunities that include working with

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is an internationally recognised
business qualification. The MBA is seen by many world-class business

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Coventry Business School offers a variety of MBA degrees reflecting the research
and teaching strengths of the Business School staff and based on the
requirements of contemporary businesses. They range from the more general to
the more industry or business specific with each carefully designed to cater for
the career aspirations and backgrounds of the graduate student.
Students can choose an MBA from the following named routes:
International Sport Management MBA - demonstrate an understanding of the
organisation of sport, its variety across nations and sports, and evolution over
time. Critically analyse governance issues and their implications for the
management of sport. Assess the key stages in sponsorship management and to
critically evaluate the use of sport sponsorship by sponsors and rights

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Assessment on your course will vary dependent on the module being studied.
Some of the modules are 100% coursework and others will be assessed through a
mixture of coursework assignments and formal examinations. In addition to
written tasks you may be required to do a presentation to ensure that you
develop a full range of communication skills. Coursework can be individual or set
in groups, which helps to develop your skills in team-working. Full assessment
information will be provided to students before modules commence.
TEACHING CONTACT HOURS
In a typical week you will normally have up to 14 hours of teaching contact with
staff. In addition, you can meet with your personal tutor or lecturing staff during
published office hours sessions which will allow you to discuss problems or
investigate further topics that interested you in a lecture. An average teaching
week will normally break down as:

personal/small group teaching 1 hour of tutorials;


medium group teaching 4 hours of practical classes, workshops or
seminars each week;
large group teaching 9 hours of lectures each week.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To commence the full-time MBA programme applicants must:

be an honours graduate of any discipline, obtained from a recognised


university/HE institution, or hold an equivalent qualification acceptable to
Coventry Business School in a business-related area;
have a minimum of two years post-degree full-time work experience in a
management/administrative/ professional capacity;
hold IELTS 6.5 or equivalent if English is not the applicants first language.

Students who do not fit with the above entry requirements can gain entry but
their degrees and experience will be assessed for appropriate content by the MBA
Director.
AP(E)L will be assessed by the MBA Director through interview.
All non-standard admissions as detailed above are taken to the Facultys
Accreditation Committee for approval.
FEES AND FUNDING
The fees for Finance MBA, Management MBA, International Business MBA and
Marketing MBA are 10,500 for UK/EU students and 14,500 for International
students.
The fees for International Sport Management MBA are 9,602 for UK/EU students
and 13,678 for International students.
WORK PLACEMENTS
As part of our MBA programmes students have the option of enrolling on the
internship placement.
This module normally lasts between 812 weeks and provides students with an
opportunity to undertake a workplace project on behalf of an organisation.

and Europe to offer a wide variety of internships.
Eligibility
Students must successfully meet the following assessment criteria:

Academic: successfully complete all Semester 1 modules including


research methods at the first attempt;
CV shortlisting: submit a CV, which will be used for competitive short
listing by the internship panel;
Presentation: prepare and successfully deliver a formal presentation;
Interview: interview with the University internship panel.

Assessment
After completing the Internship, you are required to write an extensive report
based on the managerial and educational experience derived from the internship
itself and present your findings to both the employers and academic staff.

OVERVIEW
The sport industry is expected to offer increasing employment opportunities as
the industry continues to grow throughout the world. However, alongside this
growth has also developed a more competitive labour market and higher
expectations of organisations, managers and customers within the sport industry.
WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?
The strong specificities of the sport industry (e.g. high media coverage and social
resonance, ambiguity of objectives and conflicting logics, multiplicity of
stakeholders, uncertainty of outcome, necessary cooperation and co-production
between competitors, fans loyalty, volunteerism etc.) require managers with
specific skills and expertise, and an in-depth knowledge of sport organisations.
The MSc in Sport Management at the Coventry Business School therefore aims to
provide specialist training for sport business managers who are working in the
sector or those who are seeking a professional career in the industry. It is also
open to graduates in any discipline with no prior work experience and who are
looking for the opportunity for employment in any of the many sectors that

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?


The Business School provides a specialist management course designed to suit
the needs of the sports industry sector.
The MSc course provides the flexibility to allow you to focus within the sports
industry on particular sector(s) or skills which support your professional
aspirations. It offers opportunities for work-based research and the opportunity to
undertake a company internship to gain invaluable work experience in the
industry.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should hold a good honours degree 2.2 or above in a relevant
academic discipline. Applications from candidates with relevant experience will
be considered on an individual basis. International applicants should also hold a
minimum of 6.5 score in the IELTS test for English language. More information on

Please note: we have a range of taught postgraduate awards to suit your needs,
from Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma to a full Master's Degree
(MA, MBA, MSc, LLM). In most cases you can decide to exit at Postgraduate
Certificate or Diploma level, without carrying onto the full Master's qualification.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE ENHANCE MY CAREER PROSPECTS?
The MSc in Sport Management provides a direct progression route for students
studying undergraduate applied management courses in Leisure, Sport and
Tourism to study sport management at a higher level. However, graduates of any
discipline (e.g. sport science but also general management, sociology,

engineering etc.) who wish to work in the sport industry also have the
opportunity to gain a postgraduate degree that offers a global perspective of
managing sports organisations.
