Proposed Revisions to Policy JJJ Extracurricular

Activity Eligibility (first reading)
Assistant Superintendent Denise Bartlett presented the
proposed revisions to the districts current policy. The
legislature amended A.R.S. 15-347, Extracurricular
activities, cultural tradition, in Senate Bill 1219. Specific
language has been incorporated into the policy that
prohibits a school district from restricting a pupil from
wearing a religious or cultural accessory or hairpiece
while participating in an extracurricular or athletic
activity if the item does not jeopardize the health and
safety of the student or other participants. Three other
recommended changes to the policy: 1.Academic
eligibility, Grades 9-12, changing the specific letter
grade for passing to the word passing; 2. Cumulative
eligibility check, changing the time period for how long
a student remains ineligible for two weeks at the
semester; and, 3. Changes in the area of academic
eligibility for Grades 6-8. Currently, the middle schools
use a rubric scoring to determine grades. There is a
need to change the passing grade from D to 2.0. The
board
recommended
some
minor

modifications. The policy will be brought back to the
board for a second reading at its next meeting on
September 27.
