Differences between the Southern, Middle Atlantic, and

New England Colonies


Southern
The Native American tribes located here were the Cherokee, Catawba, the
Powhattans, the Susquehannock, and other smaller tribes, and their culture
consisted of embracing nature and farming. The Southern colonies consisted of
Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. Georgia was
founded in 1733, South Carolina was founded in 1670, North Carolina was founded
in 1653, Virginia was founded in 1607, and Maryland was founded in 1634. Georgia
was founded to create an asylum for the poor and persecuted Protestants who were
flooding the British prisons, and as a buffer between Spanish Florida and The
Carolinas. The Carolinas was founded by supporters of Charles II for farming and
trade, and it later split into North and South Carolina. Virginia was the first colony
and was founded to find Gold. Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore and other
Catholics for religious freedom. The type of government of Georgia was Royal, South
Carolina was royal, North Carolina was royal, Virginia was royal, and Maryland was
Proprietary. Georgia was founded by James Ogelthorpe and others, South Carolina
was founded by 8 English nobles, Virginians founded North Carolina, the London
Company founded Virginia, and Lord Baltimore founded Maryland. Many types of
people lived in these colonies, since the south was heavy on farming and farmland,
there were mostly farmers and plantation owners, with slaves and indentured
servants tending to the fields. The 3 main exports of the Southern colonies include
rice, tobacco, and indigo. Crops here grew well because of its climate of growing
seasons with hot summers and fertile soil. The climate was warm and moist which
was perfect for grown cash crops. There were also lots of rivers, bays and wetlands
as well as large areas of farming land.

Middle Atlantic
The Native American tribes in the Middle colonies include the
Nanticoke, the Shawnee, the Seneca, The Lenni Lenape, the Iroquois and
Algonquian and these tribes were a mix of farmers, fishers, hunters and
gatherers, though their main crop was farming. The colonies in this region
consist of Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Pennsylvania
was founded 1681, Delaware in 1638, New Jersey in 1664, and New York ca.
1613. The reasoning for each founding varied, with New Jersey being
founded for farming and trade, New York founded by the Dutch for trade and
furs, Pennsylvania founded by Quakers for religious freedom, and Delaware
was founded by The New Sweden Company for trade and agricultural
opportunity with vast forests for manufacturing and lumber. The type of
government Delaware established was Proprietary, New Jersey established a
Royal, Pennsylvania had a Proprietary, and New York had a Royal
government. The founders of Delaware was the Swedes, the founder of New
Jersey was Berkeley and Carteret, the founder of Pennsylvania was William
Penn, and New York was founded by the Dutch. The middle colonies served
as an important distribution center in the English mercantile system, so there
were merchants, however, the middle colonies were fertile, so there were

wheat and corn farmers, and sailors as well. The middle colonies exported
wheat and corn, and iron. The middle colonies had a milder climate and
much better soil than New England, which made it best suited for small
farms, but it also had rolling hills, fertile soil, rivers, and a longer growing
season.

New England
The Native American tribes found in these colonies were the Pequot,
the Mohegan, the Massachuset, the Wampanoag, the Pennacook, and the
Abenaki, and some of these Natives traded with the arriving Europeans. The
colonies in New England include New Hampshire, Massachusetts,
Connecticut, and Rhode Island. New Hampshire was founded in 1623,
Massachusetts was founded in 1629, Rhode Island was founded in 1636, and
Connecticut was founded in 1635. The reason Connecticut was founded was
for religious freedom for Thomas Hooker and his followers after a
disagreement with Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island was founded by Roger
Williams and his supporters for religious freedom and speration of church
from state after a disagreement with Massachusetts Bay, Massachusetts Bay
was founded by Puritans for religious freedom, and New Hampshire was
founded by John Mason for farming. New Hampshire established a Royal
government, while Massachusetts established a Royal government, Rhode
Island established a self-governing government, and Connecticut was also
self-governing. The founder of Connecticut was Mass. Emigrants, the founder
of Rhode Island was R. Williams, the founder of Massachusetts was the
Puritans, and the founder of New Hampshire was John Mason and others. The
people that lived in theses colonies were from all walks of life, the jobs
varied, since farming was difficult with the rocky soil. Jobs included milliners,
coopers, sailors, fur traders, fishers, lumbers etc, and the ethnicity of
everyone differed, since this was an area with immigrants from many
nations. Exports of New England include ships and fish. The temperatures
were cold and there were long winters along with rocky soil. However, there
were coastal ports towns on the Atlantic Ocean.
