COURSE DESCRIPTION
Welcome to Statistics for 2016-2017! The purpose of this course is to help students develop strategies for collecting,
organizing, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data.
Students design, administer, and tabulate results from surveys and experiments. Probability and simulations aid
students in constructing models for chance behavior. Sampling distributions provide the logical structure for
confidence intervals and hypothesis tests.
Students use a TI-83/84 graphing calculator, Fathom, and Minitab statistical software, and Web-based java applets to
investigate statistical concepts.
To develop effective statistical communication skills, students are required to prepare frequent written and oral
analyses of real data.
The course is divided into these four topics: Exploring Data: Describing patterns and departures from patterns,
Sampling and Experimentation: Planning and conducting a study, Anticipating Patterns: Exploring random
phenomena using probability and simulation, and Statistical Inference: Estimating population parameters and testing
hypotheses.

Binder with dividers (keep everything from the entire year)
Loose leaf college rule paper
Graphing Calculator (TI-83 or TI-84 plus is recommended)

A: 89.5-100
D: 59.5 69.4
B: 79.5 89.4

TESTS
Tests will be given at the end of every unit. They will contain multiple choice and free response questions.
There will be a cumulative final exam at the end of the semester.
Students absent on test days must have an excused absence and are expected to make up the test immediately upon
return.

QUIZZES
Quizzes will be given every 1 2 weeks and announced at least one day in advance. There are no re-takes on quizzes.
PROJECTS
Students will complete miniature and large projects each semester.
Each project will require a formal proposal.
Projects will require students to design surveys and experiments, gather data, analyze the data numerically and
graphically, and apply inferential statistics to draw conclusions for a population.
Students will write formal reports using appropriate statistical language.

HOMEWORK / WARM UPS

Students should expect homework often. The purpose of homework is to practice and reinforce skills. In addition,
homework will help students prepare for quizzes and tests.
Homework will be collected. Grading will be based on completion.
Homework will be discussed, and students are expected to present solutions to selected problems. Students should
make revisions to assignments to monitor progress.
Late homework will be accepted for 50% credit.
Students should expect a warm up daily unless stated otherwise. Warm ups will be collected weekly and should be
completed on the same sheet of paper.

TECHNOLOGY USE GROUND RULES

Cell phones, iPods, tablets, and other electronic & Bluetooth capable devices are not permitted during class (this
includes charging electronic devices). I will confiscate electronics used during class.
Please refer to the Samohi electronics policy for more details.

ATTENDANCE
If you miss class, it is your responsibility to make up missed notes and assignments.
Senior students are allowed no more than 120 cumulative class period absences in order to participate in the
Samohi graduation ceremony. This number is for both excused and unexcused absences and includes college visits.
All absences must be excused in order to make up tests. If you miss a test, I may contact your parent to help facilitate
and arrange a make-up time. Tests must be made up within the number of days that you were absent. Failure to do so
will result in a failed test and you will lose your opportunity to re-take the exam.
HONOR CODE
All work on any assignment or test should represent solely your own thoughts and skills.
Understand that copying the work of others and allowing others to copy your work is a violation of this Honor Code.
Talking about any test to someone who has not taken is also a violation of the Honor Code.
Furthermore, know that your ability to keep your word is one of the key components to having a good sense of
character.
