THE LIVING WORLD
The Earth is home to a great variety of living beings,
which make up the biological world. There are millions
of such unique varieties of plants and animals. All living
beings are distinguished by their ability to move,
respire, grow and reproduce, all of which are absent in
non-living things.
CLASSIFICATION
Studying these millions of varieties would be a
herculean task for any scientist. To simplify it, therefore,
the scientists group together similar types of plants /
animals to study them. By studying a representative of
each group, we can know fairly well the unique features
of the group as a whole. Such a system of grouping
together living beings is known as classification.

SCIENTIFIC NOMENCLATURE
Scientists in different parts of the world call the same
animal / plant by different names. It may create a lot of
problems in communication. To get rid of this problem,
a uniform system of naming called biological
nomenclature was proposed by Carl Von Linnaeus.
According to this system, every organism has been
assigned two names i.e.
1. a generic name called genus and
2. a special name known as species.
Common Name
Wheat
Rice
Onion
Pea
Cat
Man
Frog
Scientific Name
Triticum
Oryza sativa
Allium cepa
Lathyrus odoratus
Felis domesticus
Homo sapiens
Rana tigrina
For instance, both the common cat and the lion have a
common genus Felis, but since there is a considerable
difference in their characters, each has a separate
species name. Obviously, having a common genus name
means great similarity in their basic biological features.
The common names and the corresponding scientific
names of some common living beings can be found
elsewhere in this discussion.

QUANTITATIVE MEASURES
These measures aim to control the money supply
directly as they affect the banking system as a whole.
Two of them, the CRR and the SLR are also called
Statutory Measures as they are provided in two separate
laws. Both of them are kept as a proportion of the total
deposits of the banks. In banking parlance, the total
deposits are called Demand and Time Liabilities (DTL)
or Net Demand and Time Liabilities (NDTL).
The other four key policy measures include Repo rate,
Reverse Repo rate, Marginal Standing Facility and Bank
Rate. These are voluntary options offered by the RBI to
banks only. Banks may use them or may not use them
as per their funds position from time to time.
STATUTORY MEASURES
STATUTORY LIQUIDITY RATIO-SLR, 21.5% (Feb
7, 2015)
Under section 24(2A) of the Banking Regulation Act,
1949, all banks have to maintain a certain portion of
their total deposits, as decided by the RBI from time to
time, as approved securities, gold or cash. However, in
practice, most banks block their SLR funds in
government securities approved by the RBI.
82
VOLUNTARY MEASURES
REPO RATE 7.25% w.e.f. 02-06-2015
The term Repo stands for Repurchase Agreement. It is
the rate of interest charged by the RBI from Banks on
short term loans offered against SLR securities. It is also
known as the repo rate facility.
QUALITATIVE MEASURES
These are selective measures regulate credit for specific
purposes. These measures may include changing the
margin requirements for various loans, selective credit
control, directives to curb or encourage particular loan
or simply moral persuasion to the banks.
CURRENCY CHEST
These are the bank branches authorized by the RBI to
stock currency on its behalf. The RBI maintains currency
chests at all important centres to facilitate the
distribution, exchange and remittance of notes,
including one rupee notes and rupee coins and small
coins. They report daily the details of the currency held
to the RBI
