(Regulations — 2013) ‘Time : Three Hours Maximum : 100 Marks Answer ALL questions. PART — A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks) 1. What are the main types of rotor systems ? 2. Write any two features of the semi rigid system. 3. What is reaetion torque ? 4, Brief on the phenomenon of IGE & OGE. 5. What are the principal characteristics to be evaluated in calculation of achievable performance of the craft ? 6. What are the limitations of the rotor RPM of a helicopter 7. Wh8t is control power & sensitivity ? 8. What is Hover Trim ? 9. What are the characteristics you look to opt an airfoil section for rotor craft blades ? 10, Plot the variation of induced velocity with forward speed of the craft, 07-06 1 83025 i. @) (b) 12. (a) () 1B. @* PART - B (5 x 16 = 80 Marks) (® Mlustrate the principal features and merits of a fully articulated rotor of a helicopter in details. (10) (ii) Explain the complexity of real wake. © OR Consider a conventional single rotor helicopter, explain, (1) Collective pitch (2) Cyclic pitch and the mechanism to obtain the same. Explain with sketches. Show with a sketch, a typical planform of a helicopter rotor blade and (i) Explain its aerodynamics when the blade rotates in its own plane. (ii) How does the aerodynamics change, if the blade is provided a geometric twist ? OR (i) How does the “Blade element theory” become superior to the actuator disc theory ? Explain, © (ii) By using momentum theory show that v = V(T/2p TIR?). (10) Define the term Figure of Merit of a rotor system of a helicopter. Express it in terms of induced power and profile power. Plot the variation of Induced Power, Profile Power and Parasite Power with velocity. Hence explain these terms. OR 2 83025 Y 14. 1s. (b) fa) (b) (b) (i) Explain the concept of finding the rotor drag coefficient in vertical descent. (ii) Describe the basic parts/components of an ‘Hovercraft’, and explain (1) The vertical lifting action, and (2) Forward motion action (i) Explain how helicopter is Dynamically Stable in forward flight ? (ii) Explain the stability of a single rotor helicopter with sketches. OR (Explain the concept of Control Sensitivity. (ii) Discuss the parameters governing the static directional stability of the helicopter. Explain and discuss the potential benefits to be gained by using blade twist, planform taper, low solidity, large radius and low rotational speed for the main rotor of a heavy lift helicopter that is designed to operate primarily in hover. Discuss any disadvantages associated with these design factors. OR Present a detailed process to design a rotoreraft for moderate size, payload & range with good maneuverability, robust and reliable, © (10) 8) 8) @) @) a 83025
