Aim and purpose

This unit will provide the learners with the knowledge and skills needed to carry out a range of
electrical engineering tasks using dedicated computer software packages.

Unit introduction
Using computer software in engineering analysis situations has become a common factor in
most modern engineering facilities. This includes process simulations, stability analysis and
optimal performance studies. It is therefore the aim of this unit to provide the students the
basic knowledge needed to using computer software in engineering analysis covering a range of
electrical engineering problems. The students are expected to master a wide range of software
tools during the study in this unit. Fundamentals of numerical methods in solving algebraic and
differential equations are introduced to build the theoretical foundation to be implemented in
later parts of the unit. Introduction to different computational techniques is provided. Process
simulation using MATLAB, SIMULINK and physical modeling Blocksets like SimElectronics and
SimPowerSystems is introduced to the learners. ASPEN for electric utilities is used for Load
Flow, Planning Studies, System Operation and short circuit analysis. For transient analysis of
complex systems, ATP software package is used.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Be able to use Matlab/Simulink, toolboxes and physical modeling Blocksets efficiently in
the simulation of various electrical processes.
2 Be able to model and analyse transient phenomena of complex electrical systems using
computer software like ATP.
3 Be able to model and analyse analog and digital circuits using computer software like
PSPICE.
4 Be able to model and analyse different electric power operations using computer
software like ASPEN.
