PC connection, serial ports for ID scanning

In order for 3R scanning systems to work there is a need to connect the ID reader and sometimes also the
robot to a PC where the scanning software will run. This connection is done using RS232 serial
communication. For a system without robot a single RS232 connection is enough, but when there is a robot
involved two RS232 lines are needed.
If the installation is done in a workshop where there are problems running RS232 cables between the PC
and the machine then it is possible to use an Ethernet LAN connection instead. Normally the machine is
connected to the LAN so it is possible to find or create a spare network connector in the machine control
box. For example, if there is no free network connector available then a small network hub can be inserted in
the existing network connection to the machine to create the needed connection for the extra unit.
In order to use this remote RS232 unit the driver for it must be installed and configured on the PC. Once
this is done the scanning software will be able to communicate with the scanner just as it had been
connected through a direct cable.
The remote port used by 3R is delivered by Advantech and is called ADAM4570. It is powered by 24V DC supplied through a connector on the Com port
side. On the unit are two Com ports using RJ45 connectors on one side and an
Ethernet LAN connector on the other side also using an RJ45 connector (do not
mix up these!).
To be able to use the remote port it is necessary to install the proper driver on
the PC that is going to use it.
The remote port unit itself also needs configuration for the IP address used and
the local port numbers served.

Installation of driver and configuration software

This is done from the disks supplied by Advantech. Note that on Windows XP the drivers must be
downloaded from the Advantech website (currently the URL to the download page is:
http://www.advantech.com.tw/support/sr_detail.asp?SR_ID=1%2DNYLC7).
As a service the CD containing the 3R scanning software also contains these drivers in the following
versions:
Configuration utility version 1.50b130 dated 2004-08-06
Port mapping utility version 1.33b150 dated 2004-08-06
These drivers are working with the XP operating system.
Configuring the ADAM networking
The network items are configured using the
Advantech Configuration Utility. When it has started
the screen will look like this:
The Configuration utility will search the network for
connected and active ADAM units and all units found
will be listed in the left pane.
Normally there will only be a single one.

Select the line containing the ADAM unit you want to

configure and go to the Network tab.
Now you can enter the IP address, Subnet mask and
Gateway address appropriate for your network. Note
that ADAM-4570 must have a fixed IP address; it
cannot use DHCP.
Once these data are filled in you must first click the
OK button and then the Apply button.
Important!
Now the Reset button must also be clicked!
When this is done the ADAM unit is reprogrammed
with the new address settings.
Port mapping
Once the ADAM unit has been properly set up for an IP address on
your network you must map the unit to Com ports on your PC. This
is done using the Advantech EDG Port Mapping Utility.
When it starts up the screen looks similar to this:

You must now expand the Unused ports node and select a com
port number to be used.
Here you select the installed device by its IP address and the port
on ADAM you want to map. Then click Add. This moves this port
into the range managed by ADAM.
Then repeat this for the second port of the ADAM unit.
When you leave this utility you must restart the PC in order for the
new ports to be recognized by Windows.
This will make the ADAM ports available for Windows programs to
use.
