Course Description
This course will be learner-centered. Communicative learning approach, task-based learning
approach and collaboration learning approach will be used to help students obtain a firm grasp of
language structure, improve their communicative ability in Chinese and cross-cultural
communicative competence. The course will introduce to Chinese beginners the basic Chinese
knowledge including Chinese Pinyin, Chinese characters, basic sentence patterns, and help
students develop the primary ability to communicate in Chinese. The textbook Integrated Chinese
Level 1 Part 1 consists of 10 lessons. The introduction section and the first 5 lessons will be
taught at the semester.
Student Learning Objectives/Outcomes
By the end of the course, students who successfully complete the course will be able to:
(1) Command Chinese Pinyin and 40 Chinese radicals.
(2) Recognize and use 172 basic Chinese words/phrases and some Chinese sentence patterns.
(3) Recognize, read and write basic Chinese characters and write short essays with instruction.
(4) Conduct simple Chinese conversations on the simple topics learned in classes.

Course Policies
Make-up exams
Any one missing a quiz or a test will receive a zero for that quiz or test. Exceptions will be
granted with documented medical or family emergencies only. Students missing a quiz or a test
should contact me in writing prior to the date of the absence. At my discretion, a make-up quiz or
test will be scheduled.
Required exercises
All the exercises in Workbook are required and will be collected and graded randomly.
Homework assignments for each lesson will be collected on due dates. Also you are encouraged
to read and recite the texts of the textbook.
Class Attendance
Class attendance is required. It is critical to your success for the course. Office hours are not a
substitute for coming to class.
Classroom Citizenship
All cell phones and pagers must be turned off in the classroom. Students are expected and
encouraged to participate in group work and speak and talk to their partners.
