ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF
FLEXURAL MEMBERS

Prob.1) A 250mm x 350mm rectangular beam carries a concentrated

load of 3.50 kN acting at the midspan and uniformly distributed load of
6kN/m over its entire span of 8-m. The beam is simply supported at its
ends.
a) Determine the maximum allowable shearing stress that the beam
could carry.
b) Determine the maximum allowable flexural stress that the beam
could carry.

Prob.2) A timber beam is loaded as shown in Figure 513-9-11.

Given fv 1.30 MPa and fb 9.80.
a) Which of the ff. gives the maximum bending moment.
b) Which of the ff. gives the cross-sectional dimension of the square
beam if bending stress controls.
c) Which of the ff. gives the cross-sectional dimension of the square
beam if shearing stress controls.
d) Which of the ff. gives the cross-sectional dimension of the smallest
square beam that both stresses could control.

Prob.3) A rectangular beam 5 in. wide by 8 in. depth supports a total

distributed load of W and a concentrated load of 2W applied as shown in
Figure 513-12. If fb 1500 psi and fv 120 psi.
a) Determine the value of W as to flexural stress controls.
b) Determine the value of W as to shearing stress controls.
c) Determine the maximum value of W as to both stresses controls.

Prob.4) A masonry terrace of 70mm concrete surface with 15mm cement

tiles as shown in the figure 513-19-21 rests on a 100mm x 225mm timber
joist spaced at 400mm on centers acting as simple beam with an
effective span of 4.0m. Weight of wood is 7.55 kN/m^3 and masonry to
be 24 kN/m^3. Modulus of Elasticity is 13,800 MPa. The allowable
stresses are 16 MPa for bending, 0.70 MPa for shear parallel to the grain
and deflection is 1/360 of span.
a) Determine the uniform load it could support if shearing stress
controls.
b) Determine the uniform load it could support if bending stress controls.
c) Determine the uniform load it could support if deflection controls.

Prob.5) A timber beam 4m long is simply supported at both ends. It

carries a uniform load of 10 kN/m including its own weight. The

wooden section has a width of 200mm and a depth of 260mm and is
made up of 80% grade Apitong.
Properties of Apitong:
Bending and tension parallel to grain = 16.5 MPa = Fb
Shear parallel to grain = 1.73 MPa = Fv
Modulus of elasticity in bending = 7.31 GPa =E

a) What is the maximum allowable flexural stress of the beam.

b) What is the maximum allowable shearing stress of the beam.
c) What is the maximum deflection of the beam.

Prob.6) Find the cross-sectional dimensions of the smallest

square beam that can be loaded as shown in Figure if fv 1.0
MPa and fb 8 MPa.

Prob.7) A built up timber beam has a cross section shown and is used to
support a concentrated load on a simply supported span 8m long.
a) Determine the maximum shear of the beam if the max. shearing stress
is 1.20 MPa.
b) Determine the value of P that would cause simultaneously a maximum
flexural stress of 8 MPa and a maximum shearing stress of 1.20 MPa.
c) Determine the location of the load P from the left support.
