Josh Gilbert

Im from Lexington, Mass, which, until 1713,

was part of Cambridge, so I guess that makes
me a local.
Im a musician: I started playing trumpet in 5th
grade, and played in wind ensembles,
orchestras, and jazz band through high
school. I currently play professionally in the
Greater Boston Area in various pit orchestras,
brass quintets, jazz combos, etc. I play piano as well, but rarely in
public.
I started teaching trumpet lessons while I was in high school, which
sparked my interest in education.
I received my bachelors degree in Music with a
Concentration in Music-in-Education (MIE) from
New England Conservatory (NEC) in Boston. At
NEC, I worked extensively in the MIE
department, where I was the departmental
assistant, and studied with Lyle Davidson and
Larry Scripp, psychologists of music who spent
many years at Harvard Project Zero and HGSE
starting in the 1980s. It was their influence in
large part that led me to the Arts in Education
program at HGSE.
I am currently a Research Associate at the Center for Music in the
Arts in Education (CMAIE), a non-profit organization that studies the
impact of music and other arts on education. Ive worked on
research projects for Conservatory Lab Charter School in Boston, the
Center for Arts Education in New
York, San Francisco Opera, and
the Chicago Arts Partnerships in
Education, among others. Check

do.
