ARGENTINA

HISTORY

1930-Argentina has been ruled by series of military juntas, provisional government and
dictators.
1949-The Constitution of 1853 was replaced by Juan Peron or Peronist Constitution
1955-The Constitution of 1853 was reinstated
1976-A military juntas took power and made changes on the laws.
1983-Argentina restored democracy

GOVERNMENT

BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT
Executive

President- Head of State and Head of Government. Nations chief executive officer.
Commander-in-chief. Appointment of: state owned corporations, judges and
ambassadors, conduct of foreign affairs, veto power, right to declare a state of siege

Vice President-Second highest political position in Argentina; President of the Senate


Chamber and Assumes presidential duties in a caretaker in case of absence or temporary
incapacity of the head of state

President and Vice President are elected by universal suffrage or popular vote

Legislative

Bicameral
Composed of 329 seats
Chamber of deputies and Senate
Elected through Proportional representation system

2 SPECIAL BODIES:
1. Auditor General- technical advisory of Congress
2. Ombudsman- defense & protection of human rights

CAMARA de SENADORES (UPPER HOUSE)- has 72 seats and serve for 6 year term
CAMARA de DIPUTADOS (LOWER HOUSE)- has 257 seats and serve for 4 year term

Judicial Branch

Is independent from the executive and legislatures

The nation is divided into judicial districts each with at least one judge

9 members appointed by President

Each province has its own judicial system

The judges of all other courts are appointed by the Council of Magistrates of the Nation

They have 5 Federal Courts located in Buenos Aires, La Plata, Rosario, Cordoba, Parana.

Federal Government
Is based on the division of powers between the federal government and local
governments.
Provinces do not participate in the amendment
Guarantees freedom of religion but the president and vp must profess Catholicism

1. Partido Justicialista- developed by Peron in 1940. The largest party in Congress
2. Union Civica Radical- founded in 1890. Oldest political party.
