TEXT 1: SWIMMING FOR HER LIFE

1. Vocabulary strategy : Skipping words and phrases
When reading a text, you may encounter unfamiliar word or phrase. One good
strategy is to SKIP THEM. They may not be necessary to understand the meaning of
a paragraph or the meaning of the whole text.
However, if you find that a paragraph is unclear when you skip word or phrases:
1. Figure out the part of speech of the word or phrases you skipped (noun, adjective,
verb, adverb).
2. Think about what you do understand.
3. Keep reading.
Read the following sentence.
Three miles from the xxxx, the engine of the plane stopped.
First, try to figure out the part of the speech. The article THE suggests that the
skipped word is noun : Three miles from the something, the engine of the plane
stopped. Think about what you do understand (that the engine of the plane stopped
three miles from something the plane could land on), and keep reading.
