The obligation to fulfill these mitzvos (i.e., the 613


mitzvos of the Torah) is not constant; rather, they are
obligatory during specific times of the year or day.
Six mitzvos, however, are obligatory constantly; they
should not be absent from ones consciousness for even
one second of his life. They are:
(1) To have faith in Hashem.
(2) Not to believe in other gods.
(3) To understand that He is One.
(4) To love Him.
(5) To fear Him.
(6) Not to stray after the thoughts of our heart and the
sight of our eyes.

The Six Constant Mitzvot

There are six mitzvot that Jews are instructed to fulfill at all times and in all places.
These are called the six Mitzvot Temidiot or Constant Mitzvot.
Mitzvot are generally classified into two categories, time-bound and not timebound. Time-bound mitzvot can only be fulfilled at certain times, such as eating
matzah on Pesach or shaking a lulav on Succot. Even most mitzvot that are not
time-bound cannot be fulfilled all the time. For example, one cannot fulfill the
mitzvah of mezuzah if one doesnt have a door. There are, however, six mitzvot
that Jews are instructed to fulfill at all times and in all places. Riding the bus?
You can fulfill six mitzvot. Laid up in bed with a bad cold? You can do these.
These are called the six Mitzvot Temidiot or Constant Mitzvot.
1. To Know There is a God
I am Hashem your God who brought you out of Egypt. (Exodus 20:2)
The first of the Six Constant Mitzvot is also the first of the Ten Commandments;
it is the mitzvah to recognize that Hashem exists. We must acknowledge not
only that He created the world, but that He continues to be involved in its dayto-day operations and our personal lives. We should not just believe in God; we
should go out and look at all the evidence so that we know theres a God.
2. Not to Believe in Any Other Gods
Do not recognize any other gods in My presence. (Exodus 20:3)
Any place one could possibly go is in Gods presence; accordingly, there are no
other powers! One must not even believe that Hashem created the world but
then turned control over to an angel or other servant. We must recognize that no
being created by Hashem can thwart His will.
3. To Know That God is One
Listen, Israel, Hashem is our God, Hashem is One. (Deuteronomy 6:4)
Aside from constantly recognizing Hashems unity, it is also a mitzvah to recite
this verse, the Shema, both in the morning and at night. Recognizing Hashems
unity means knowing that He is unique, He has no partners, components or
divisions, and that He exists outside of time and space. Hashem is the only
source of life and existence.

4. To Love God
You shall love Hashem your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with
all your ability. (Deuteronomy 6:5)
Loving Hashem should be the natural result of recognizing His existence; if we
truly understand all that Hashem does for us, how could we help but appreciate
and love Him for it? Studying Torah enables us to become more aware of
Hashem and to become even closer to Him. We should also be prepared to give
of our time, our resources and more for the sake of Hashem.
5. To Be in Awe of God
You must revere Hashem your God; Him you shall serve. (Deuteronomy 10:20)
Similarly, if we are aware that theres a God, we couldnt help but be in awe of
Him. To revere God means to recognize that our actions have consequences.
Just as becoming sick is a consequence of drinking poison, there are spiritual
consequences, both positive and negative, to our actions. Knowing that theres
a God and a system of spiritual checks and balances helps keep us on the right
path.
6. Not to Be Led Astray by Our Desires
Dont follow your heart or your eyes, after which one can go astray. (Numbers
15:39)
Heart refers to heretical thoughts and eyes refers to physical temptations,
both of which can distract a person from whats really important in life. We have
to keep our eyes on the prize, that is, on Torah and its reward. We must not be
led astray by philosophies that are not compatible with Torah or by physical
desires.
These six mitzvot can be fulfilled with thoughts alone, regardless of a persons
physical abilities. All Jews can use these mitzvot to get to know, love and
respect our Creator better, as well as to become better people.

Mitzva #4: Loving G-d


Method #1: Nature
When someone gives you a gift, the natural response is to love the source of that
gift.
The world of nature with all its phenomenal genius, beauty and symmetry is a
gift from God.
Maimonides writes:
What is the path to love (and awe) of God? When one ponders God's great and
wonderful acts of creation, and sees in them a genius that has no comparison,
then automatically a person will love, praise, glorify and deeply desire to know
the greatness of God. (Foundations of Torah 2:2)
The wonders of creation are endless. Birds, flowers, canyons, babies. The
balance of the ecosystem, the intricacy of the human body. It's all a marvel. And
as science makes more discoveries, deeper layers continuously emerge.
One of the first questions asked when getting to heaven is: "Did you taste
all of God's fruits?"
The Talmud says that one of the first questions we're asked when getting to
heaven is: "Did you taste all of God's fruits?" The beauty of fruit is that it not only
sustains us nutritionally, but includes many fringe benefits like taste, texture,
color, and form. We will be asked, "Did you taste all the fruits?" in other words,
did you appreciate God's gifts in this world?
Method #3: Torah
Yet even this awareness won't necessarily lead you to change your innermost
desires.
What would motivate you to change? The realization that your deepest desire is
to connect with God.
Torah study is the way to discover this path of meaning. Torat Chaim literally
the book of "Instructions for Living" is God's communication to the world. It's the
ultimate repository for wisdom on how to succeed at marriage, parenting,
community building, and fixing the world.
Just as the laws of physics are vast and complex, so too metaphysical truths are
complex. It takes a lot of painstaking effort to understand. But once you work it
through and gain clarity, you'll be awestricken. Everything fits together and you
begin to see the perfection, consistency and harmony of the system.
Torah is the mind of God, the ultimate repository for wisdom.

That's because Torah is the mind of God.


What happens if you study Torah and don't feel anything? Then you haven't
studied properly.
The sign of successful Torah study is when it becomes an insatiable addiction. If
something doesn't make sense, you will rack your brains to figure it out. And
every time you succeed in working it out, the pleasure makes you want more and
more. This level is called Ahavat Torah true love of Torah. You become so
overwhelmed that Torah study becomes your very essence and you want to
absorb as much as you can.
Torah study ingrains in us the idea that God is the infinite source of all wisdom
and defines the ultimate in "meaning." Therefore personal goals and desires
cannot compare, and you'll drop anything which is not consistent with the will of
God.
That's loving God "with all your heart."
