Sfumature urbane
Urban Shades
EDMUND SUMNER
In Tokyo the largest project of urban regeneration of the last ten years has
just been concluded. The immense intervention, covering an area of 400,000
square metres, is the work of the British studio Conran + Partners, which
was awarded the contract over the heads of rivals like Csar Pelli, KPS
and Kengo Kuma. Futako Tamagawa, situated in the south-west corner
of the city along the course of the Tama River, is a complex consisting of
residences, shops, offices, hotels, a multiscreen cinema, a television studio
and a park. The various elements of the programme are linked by a kilometrelong promenade, along which the buildings gradually change their appearance
and colour from the railway station to the park blending more and more
into the landscape that dominates the last stretch of the boulevard: thus,
in the transition from city to nature, the colours of the architecture go
from vivid and bold to delicate and pale. The project has been granted,
for the first time in Japan, LEED ND Gold Standard environmental precertification, corresponding to the BREEAM UK Excellent rating

Since the summer of 2013 the MUCEM, designed by Rudy Ricciotti, has stood
on the waterfront of Marseille. If we unpick the acronym Museum of European
and Mediterranean Civilisation the complexity of the challenge this institution
has taken on becomes clear. It is staging an exhibition that perfectly embodies the
museums vision. Open until February 29, it is entitled I Love Panoramas (above,
right, the poster) and reflects on the sociocultural dimension of the landscape.
Whether natural or constructed, the panorama has been made the focus of
research that analyses its narrative power, its ability to encapsulate the distinctive
elements of a community and its context and its transformations and prospects.
The design of the exhibition, co-produced with the Muses dArt et dHistoire
in Geneva, is by the Adrien Rovero studio. The curators Laurence Madelin and
Jean-Roch Bouiller have involved, among others, Peter Greenway, Olafur Eliasson,
Elina Brotherus (left, Der Wanderer 2), Jeff Wall and David Hockney.

esposizioni in Europa. Poca udienza ebbe allora liniziativa
Introini (Lisbona 98), Claudio Gobbi (Hannover 2000,
nella foto), Maurizio Montagna (Svizzera 2002), Gabriele
Basilico (Saragozza 2008), Pierfrancesco Celada (Shanghai
2010), Matteo Cirenei e Marco Menghi (Milano 2015).
What is the Expo going to leave to Milan in 2016? The members
of the Milanese Association of Architects had already asked
themselves this question six years ago, when they organized
a photographic exhibition and a series of meetings on the urban
and environmental aftermath of five expositions held in Europe.
The initiative received little attention on the political front at the
time and the question remains a highly topical one. So much so
that an updated version of the exhibition was put on last October,
accompanied by a catalogue containing almost 90 pictures taken
by eight photographers: Claudio Sabatino (Seville 92), Marco
Introini (Lisbon 98), Claudio Gobbi (Hanover 2000, pictured),
Maurizio Montagna (Switzerland 2002), Gabriele Basilico
(Saragossa 2008), Pierfrancesco Celada (Shanghai 2010)
and Matteo Cirenei and Marco Menghi (Milan 2015). Some of the
photographs have been used to illustrate the features that this
issue of Abitare is devoting to Seville, Lisbon and Shanghai.

All four exhibitions on at the Venetian museum dedicated to Mariano Fortuny, one of the most
eclectic and refined artists of the last century, until 13 March 2016, are in the feminine.
Henriette Fortuny. Portrait of a Muse celebrates his partner in life and work (pictured),
and the person who bequeathed Palazzo Fortuny to the city of Venice. A second exhibition
presents the paintings, drawings and photographs of Romaine Brooks, one of the most
unconventional figures on the art scene of the 1920s, while the exhibition Erme e Saturni
is devoted to the Venetian painter Ida Barbarigo, now ninety years old. Finally the project
of the well-known French fashion photographer Sarah Moon, born out of an affinity
of style between the visionary and the fantastic, has been conceived as a homage
to Mariano Fortuny, and to his fascinating house and workshop.

Wu Zhiqiang, an internationally renowned townplanner and one of the founders of the Faculty of
Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University,
has been studying universal expositions since 1984.
This is all down to the mayor of Shanghai who, when
proclaiming him the winner of a competition for young
architects on the future of the Chinese metropolis,
gave him an assignment: Study the Expos carefully,
investigate every aspect of the question; sooner
or later theres going to be one in Shanghai. He did
just that and exactly twenty years later, in 2004, was
appointed Chief Planner of Expo Shanghai 2010. It was
he who chose to interpret the theme Better City,
Better Life principally in an environmental sense, with
the introduction of sustainability as an indispensable
lever of urban development: something which marked
a drastic change of direction in Chinese mentality
and practices. He was also responsible for the
contextual planning of the Expo and post-Expo, with
the preparation of the site, the buildings and the study
of infrastructure in terms of future use. The whole

just to make the Expo function, but also and above all
to ensure the development and liveability of the city
afterwards. Eight underground lines were constructed
in six years, a world record.
Was this a different way of understanding and
planning than in the usual approach to big events?
For us Chinese, the plan or design is not the form.
In our language we say SheJi: it is a term of military
origin that signifies putting a strategy together under
the counter, surreptitiously. You design, you build and
when people see it they will understand the sense. In
Shanghai we worked in this way, on three dimensions
simultaneously: the past, that is to say the highly
polluting chemical factory that was located in the city
centre and on the site of which the exposition would be
held; the present, the Worlds Fair; the future, the city
until 2030. The Shanghai Expo has done a lot
for the city because it has been used as a means
of development.
In particular in Shanghai it seems that there was
an attempt to bring about a shift towards
greenness through the Expo.
We interpreted the theme Better City, Better Life
precisely in terms of its environmental spirit and
of sustainability. To each of the countries taking part
we gave highly detailed green specifications for the
construction of the pavilions, and we asked everyone,
especially those who were most advanced in this field,
to bring the best of their technology to Shanghai.
We wanted people to see it. And the Expo was a lesson,

The XXI Triennale has a hidden oxymoron in its title, in the contrast between

On this occasion the Triennale presents itself as a small-scale Expo of design,
tending to expand into the city, into urban structures that in some cases are also
public. So the crux is the handling of the cultural activities of the institution.

ALBERT GREENWOOD
Design: a concept apparently familiar and clear to all, but one that still lends itself
to semantic manipulations like the title of this Triennale, which does however have
the merit of summing up in one fell swoop the usual hackneyed questions
about the future of Design or the Design of the future.

Looking backing at the history of the Triennale, I would like to remind people that this
institution has conceived, incubated and constructed permanent works that have
become part of the urbanistic and architectural history of the city of Milan.
So if the XXI Triennale were to be reduced to a group of temporary exhibitions
that aspect of incisiveness would be lost.

Milan in this moment is objectively a place with a concentration of examples of great
contemporary architecture. Almost all the winners of the Pritzker Prize have built
in Milan and in a way imagining a festival organized around this ferment would make
sense. However, I believe that there has still been a more or less conscious abdication
to Venice, which has grabbed the whole history of architecture.

a format that lasts for months might add up. Now that
Milan is objectively a place with a concentration of
examples of great contemporary architecture almost
all the winners of the Pritzker Prize have built
in the city imagining a festival organized around this
ferment would make sense. The Expo has been a great
factor of convergence and condensation of energy
for Milan. In the space of a year projects commenced ten,
five and three years ago have taken on the same pace.
This phenomenon is unique, especially for a city that
is made up of elites who often dont even speak to each
other, but who have given themselves a common space
with the Expo. Milan is becoming a capital again.
The financial world, with Generali and Allianz,
and the immaterial one, with Google, Amazon
and Alibaba, have chosen Milan as a European hub.
This logic suggests that the site of the Expo could be
used to host embassies of creativity and innovation,
putting itself forward as an intermediary pole between
London and Istanbul. Lea Vergine puts us on our
guard about the historical legacy of the Triennale
and the destiny of Milan and says: Giulio Carlo Argan
wrote back in the 1970s that the Triennale without
a scientific grounding would be just a digression
on the useful and the agreeable, something between
the trade fair and the funfair. Designs are made
by technicians but technicians who are not aware
of the intrinsically political nature of their discipline
are just tools in the hands of groups with power. I have
the impression that today the cult of incompetence
prevails all over the city. I find the situation ridiculous
without being funny. If you think that there has been
an exhibition on Barbie dolls at Chipperfields MUDEC,
it tells you a lot about the state of culture in Milan,
a city stripped of its authority for contemporary culture
because only a situation that produces a critical attitude
towards its reality is contemporary. The project has

contengono architetture egocentriche e discutibili.
right in the centre. Today it is a badly constructed area that has been
poorly digested by the city and still bears the disjointed marks of the
Expo which took place some 24 years ago. Unfortunately, to avoid
the cost of dismantling them, many of the temporary pavilions were
sold at a symbolic price instead of being demolished. The upshot is
that they are still there, increasingly dilapidated and with no function,
explains Gaia Redaelli, Milanese architect and former head of the
Public Works Department of the Region of Andalusia. But the real
original sin, according to Redaelli, lies in the absence of a plan capable
of turning the Expo site into a piece of city. The area has been
conceived as an ensemble of enclosed lots that contain egocentric and
dubious works of architecture. There is a total lack of any design of
public space made up of squares, axes and services. So, at a distance
of a quarter of a century, the former exhibition site now presents the
appearance of a large and patchy district, some parts of which are
in a state of neglect. And yet Expo 92 was in no way a failure, if we
consider its spin-offs for the city. The legacy has been very positive
and has led to a radical modernization of Seville, confirms Antonio
Ortiz, head with Antonio Cruz of the citys most famous studio of
architecture. The trump card has been the infrastructure. First of all
the High-Speed Train, which now connects Seville with Madrid in two
and a half hours. Then there was the shifting of the old railway tracks,
thanks to which the city has gained an open and pleasant relationship
with the river. And finally more mobility was permitted by six new
bridges over the Guadalquivir. One of these is the Puente del Alamillo
designed by Santiago Calatrava, which has become one of Sevilles
best-known landmarks and leads to the agricultural park of the same
name to the north of the built-up area: another of the positive legacies
of the Expo, this is a green lung much appreciated by the inhabitants
of the city in which stands the new Olympic stadium designed by Ortiz
