1.1 INTRODUCTION
As we know, teaching young learners can be quiet easy by applying interesting and
enjoyable activities in the classroom seeing how they can easily catch and recognize something
they first see and listen to. However, it might be a matter when they pick up wrong things
because young learners usually believe something in the first sight. In such a way, an English
teacher is expected to be very careful in teaching children so that the knowledge they catch is
reliable. To sum up, an English teacher needs to be creative and innovative in providing the
materials to make them not bored, an English teacher can use visual aids as well and there are
still various media.
As have been stated before that the media used in the classroom are various. Nursery
rhymes, pictures, and videos are some sort of them. For more details, I am going to draw Unit
of Works in teaching English in the classroom using those kinds of interesting media.
First of all, I have picked up a theme Part of Body to teach the 1 st grade students of
elementary level. I need three meetings to finish these materials with each of it requires 35
minutes. I am going to not only use textbook but also pictures, songs and the like to encourage
them to study with something enjoyable. Additionally, I am going to apply the use of 2 nd
language acquisition in my classroom in teaching four language skills and three components. At
the beginning, teaching listening and speaking are crucial seeing how they are the skills children
acquire first when they learn their 1st language. It will be complete by adding one component,
that is Vocabulary. The reason is children need a store of words to either speak or listen. The
main media and materials I use are pictures and a song.
After that, the second meeting might be reading and pronunciation. It is really significant,
after they are able to speak and listen they are asked to learn to read with good proficiency in
pronunciation. The media I am going to use is a simple short text with pictures in it. For the last
meeting, I will teach writing and grammar. Why? Because before they create a piece of writing,
they have to store as many words as possible. The more they read, listen, and speak the more
words they can produce. For grammar, seeing that grammar is the reflection of the language
which guide us how to organize words in a sentence correctly, the teacher are required to teach
them about it, but the very basic one because they are still children. For writing, the activities
will be just organizing jumbled words.
To summarize, teaching children will be very pleasant by applying enjoyable activities
because they still like playing and singing. Here I use some media to promote their learning
process. In addition to the objective of media itself, I teach them four skills and three
components in such a way they learn their first language. There will be three stages with 35
minutes in each meeting.

1.2 THE FIRST MEETING

In the first meeting, I am going to teach listening, speaking, and vocabulary with 35
minutes time allocation. Here I use a song and students would listen to the song carefully and
then repeat while singing together. For vocabulary mastery I use pictures. Students are also asked
to be able to spell the words.
STEPS
1. Opening
a. Greeting
Good morning/afternoon, How are you today?
b. Giving leading questions
Which part of your body let you see things around?(the answer must be eyes)
which part of your body let you walk around?(the answer must be feet)
Giving simple feedback such as very good when they speak up is a good idea.
c. Introduction
The teacher : okay, now does everybody know what we are going to learn?
Students
: Yes mam
The teacher : what is that? Would anyone tell me?
A student
: Hands and feet mam
The teacher : Okay, very good. We are going to learn hands and feet and also all
parts of our bodies
2. Listening and Speaking
Who likes singing a song?. The students will put their hand up while shouting me

Head and shoulders, knees and toes,
Eyes, ears, mouth and nose.
Ankles, elbows, feet and seat, feet and
seat,
Ankles, elbows, feet and seat, feet and
seat,
And hair and hips and chin and cheeks,
After the teacher sings a song once, the teacher will guide the students to repeat to her
line by line. The teacher will also touch the parts of body while singing a song so that they know
each part of body spots. After they master the song, they will sing together with the teacher while
touching their parts of body.

3. Vocabulary

The teacher : alright students, tell me what is it? (pointing to one student and
touching feet)
The student : feet mam
The teacher : okay, anyone? How do you spell feet? (Giving thumb up to the student
and walking around the table)
One student : F-E-E-T
The teacher : Good job (the teacher will do this for the rest of parts of body that
exist in the song, perhaps 3 to 4 words)
The teacher will do this activity to encourage them learning vocabulary. After that, the
teacher will give them a simple exercise.
4. The exercise
a. The teacher shares pictures to students, each student will hold 1 picture of parts of body.
b. The teacher will come to each student desk and ask them to mention what is in the
picture and how to spell the word
c. The key

Ear (E-A-R)

Head (H-E-A-D)

Shoulder (S-H-O-U-L-D-E-R)

5. Closing
The teacher

: What have u studied today?

The teacher

: okay, thats very right, anybody want to add?

- silence -

The teacher : okay thats enough. Now, clean your stuff!! (after a while) dont forget to study
at home, children. Goodbye

1.3 THE SECOND MEETING

In the second meeting, I am going to teach reading and pronunciation with 35 minutes
time allocation. Here I use a short text with pictures in it.
STEPS
1. Opening
a. Greeting
Good morning/afternoon, How are you today?
b. Asking questions
how do you pronounce elbow? how do u pronounce ankles?
The teacher asks questions while walking around to find students who want to answer.
After students answer the teachers questions, the teacher keeps repeating the words /elbo/
and /kls/. The teacher also puts it in sentences I have two /kls/.
2. Reading Simple Text and Practicing Pronunciation

a. The teacher shares the students the copy of this short text and commands them to stress
the pronunciation on the words with pictures.
b. The teacher will read the text thoroughly and then the students will repeat line by line.
The teacher
: Lets start with my /hed/
The students
: Lets start with my /hed/
The teacher

The students

c. After they are able to pronounce the words correctly. The students are given an
assignment
3. The exercise

a. To check their capability in reading and pronouncing words, the teacher only read it once
so they have to pay attention of the intonation of reading and how the words are
pronounce thoroughly.
b. The key
When I eat, my /stmk / fills with food
My two /a:mz/ can hug you

- silence -

The teacher : okay thats enough. Now, clean your stuff!! (after a while) dont forget to study
at home, children. Goodbye

1.4 THE THIRD MEETING

At the third meeting, I am going to teach writing skill and grammar. The allocation time
is 35 minutes. The grammar points which are going to be taught are singular-plural.
STEPS
1. Opening
a. Greeting
Good morning/afternoon, How are you today?
b. Asking questions
how many eyes do we have? how many ears do we have? how many fingers do
we have?
The teacher should give simple feedback such as very good when they speak up.
c. Introduction

3. The exercise (organizing jumble words)
a.

The students are given some cards with different color and asked to organize them into one
sentence. Additionally, if the students find two cards with the same color, they have to choose
one of them which they think the correct one.
b. The students have to arrange them correctly on their desk. It is interesting because they can
move the cards
c. After they are sure that they have arranged them correctly, they have to copy the sentence
into their notes

The teacher

: okay, thats very right, anybody want to add?

- silence -

The teacher : okay thats enough. Now, clean your stuff!! (after a while) dont forget to study
at home, children. Goodbye

CONCLUSION
Teaching children is easy, isnt it? Especially when the teacher applies activities that
make students happy, they will easily catch the material and understand it. It is also important to
make them active students. The media which can promote their learning can be textbooks,
pictures, songs, and anything interesting and colorful. Those kinds of instructional materials can
stimulate their minds to want to dig deeper in learning English because children are curious of
something new. For younger learners in the 1st grade of elementary school, 35 minutes in each
meeting is enough. As have been mentioned in the previous chapter, the activities which can be
done in the classroom are various such as jumbled words, singing a song, reading a short text and
so on. Furthermore, the activities cannot be done in isolation without the role of four skills and
three components (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Vocabulary, Pronunciation, and
Grammar).
