What is a subject? A subject is the noun in each complete sentence. What is a verb? a
verb is a word that is used to describe an action. What is predicate? the predicate includes the
verb and everything that follows in the sentence. 5 examples are, 1) Bob runs fast. Bob is the
subject, runs is the verb, and runs fast is the predicate. 2) Tammy jumps far. Tammy is the
subject, jumps is the verb, and jumps far is the predicate. 3) The bird flew into the glass. Bird is
the subject, flew is the verb, and flew into the glass is the predicate. 4) Jeff walked down the
street. Jeff is the subject, walked is the verb, and walked down the street is the predicate 5)
Walter plays chess. Walter is the subject, plays is the verb, plays chess is the predicate.
What are phrases? A phrase is a group of words that lack a subject, a verb , or both and
therefore cannot stand alone as a sentence. They Are 5 common phrases. Prepositional,
appositive, participial, gerund, and infinitive phrases. Here are 5 examples of prepositional
phrases. 1) the sky is dark at night. At night is the prepositional phrase 2) we listen to the radio In
the car. in the car is the prepositional phrase 3) we have new neighbors across the street. Across
the street is the prepositional phrase 4)we went sledding down the hill. Down the hill is the
prepositional phrase 5) the ball flew over her head.over her head is the prepositional phrase here
are 5 examples of appositive phrases. 1) My sister, Mariah is 15 years old. Mariah is the
appositive phrase 2) My mom, Marquita drives a maroon

appositive phrase. 5 examples of participial phrases. 1) Crying, the girl ran home from school. 2)
laughing, the student continued to tell the story. 3) while falling the boy remember the floor was
wet. 4) soaring across the sky the bird flew south. 5)quickly checking the door, the students made
sure the teacher was gone. 5 examples of gerund phrases 1) swimming is not as easy as it
looks.2) flying is not an easy thing to do. 3) Climbing is not as fun as it looks. 4) running is very
tiresome. 5) stretching is very relaxing. Here are 5 examples of infinitive phrases. 1)Mariah
needs to walk the dog. 2) Beyonc needs to sing. 3) Phil needs to drive. 4) Michael needs to
dance. 5) she needs to eat.
What are clauses? A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a predicate. 2
types of clauses are independent and dependent. Here are 5 examples of independent clauses. 1)
Beyonc is rich 2) I have a green car 3) I drive my car to work 4) I enjoy eating food. 5) the earth
revolves around the sun. here are 5 examples of dependent clauses. 1)when my car was new. 2)
because Beyonc is rich. 3) since I have a green car. 4)because I enjoy eating food. 5)when the
earth revolves around the sun.
What are fragments? A sentence fragment is a group of words that is capitalized and
punctuated as a sentence but is not a sentence, here are 5 examples of fragments. 1) walked out
the house and left. 2) promoting his video and bragging. 3) waking her up and leaving 4) the boy
passed the ball. Missed the shot, lost the game. 5) although it's dark outside.
What is a comma splice? A comma splice is when a comma is used to join 2 independent
clauses. Here are 5 examples of comma splices 1) the dog was good, he got a lot of treats. The
correction would be the dog was good , therefore he got a lot of treats. 2) the dining hall serves

allot of food, I'm a vegetarian. The correction is the dining hall serves allot of food, but I'm a
vegetarian. 3)the man has several tattoos, the man is scared of needles. The correction would be,
the man has several tattoos, however he is terrified of needles. 4) the man had allot of hair on his
head, the man got a haircut. The correction would be, the man had allot of hair on his head, so he
got a haircut. 5) Trae has a red car, Cel has a blue car. The correction would be Trae has a red car,
however Cel has a red car.
What is a fused sentence? A fused sentence is when 2 independent clauses follow each
other without punctuation in between. Here are 5 examples. 1) Trae has a red car. Cel has a blue
car. The fused sentence would say, Trae has a red car Cel has a blue car 2)the man has several
tattoos. They all were of different animals. The fused sentence would be, the man has several
tattoos they all are of different animals. 3) the dog was great. He received a lot of treats the fused
correction to the sentence would be, the dog was great he received a lot of treats. 4)the official
reviewed the call for a couple minutes. They were unable to determine a ruling. The fused
version would be, the officials reviewed the play for a couple minutes they were unable to
determine a ruling. The guy took the lady on a date, she enjoyed herself. The fused sentence
would be, the guy took the lady on a date she enjoyed herself.
What is a simple sentence? a sentence consisting of only one clause, with a single subject
and predicate. What is a compound sentence? a sentence with more than one subject or
predicate.What is a complex sentence? a sentence containing a subordinate clause or clauses.
Here are 5 examples of a simple sentence. 1) the dog barked loud. 2) the cat meowed. 3) the frog
leaped in the water. 4) the bird flew to its nest. 5) the shark attacked the dolphin. Here are 5
examples of a compound sentence. 1) the burglar broke into the house, but the dog barked
waking up the people. 2)we went outside to play, however it started to rain. 3) it was dark

outside, therefore mom told us to come inside. 4)the food was very delicious, however we got
sick. 5) it was a little cold, so john put on a jacket. Here are 5 examples of complex sentences, 1)
even though loch raven lost every game, Montrae and Marchael always put on a show. 2) even
though he can't catch, Dejon still chose to wear gloves every game. 3) he was one of the best
athletes in the state, however he got injured. 4) even though there might be some confusion, I
remember how to get home. 5) Loch raven was great in football, until we woke up.

What is a declarative sentence? A declarative sentence is a statement that end with a period.
Here are 5 examples of a declarative sentence. 1) the sky is blue. 2) I like pizza. 3) the flash is
my favorite hero. 4) water is wet. 5) bumble bees like honey. What is an interrogative sentence?
An interrogative sentence is a sentence that's asks a question and end with a question mark. Here
are 5 examples of an interrogative sentence. 1) what is your name? 2) how old are you? 3) where
are your parents? 4) where were you? 5) what happened last night. What is an imperative
sentence? An imperative sentence is a command or a request. Here are 5 examples. 1) get out! 2)
get up! 3) get some food. 4) roll over. 5) sit! What is an exclamatory sentence? An exclamatory
sentence is a sentence that expresses emotion. Here are 5 examples, 1) oh my goodness! 2) ugh, I
hate it here! 3) I thought I was alone! 4) I'm rich! 5) get over here now!
