MUSIC Unit 2
Composing
JD*(S17-2660U20-1)
Set briefs
You must compose a piece of music in response to one of the following set briefs.
Briefs 1 and 2 require you to compose a section of a longer piece and briefs 3 and 4 require you to
write a short piece.
1. Compose a theme and one variation for a solo and accompanying instrument(s) which
will be presented as part of a recital in a university music department open day.
You may write for any solo instrument and up to three accompanying instruments of your choice.
2. Compose the exposition section of the first movement of an instrumental quartet to be
performed in a Young Composers competition in Carmarthen.
3. Compose a short solo song with accompaniment intended for performance at Easter.
You may write your own words or choose appropriate words for this song. You are advised not
to choose words from a well-known song as this may lead to a predictable response.
4. Compose a short duet intended for performance at an eisteddfod.
The duet may be written for voices or instruments or a mixture of the two. The duet may be
accompanied or unaccompanied.
You are reminded that all four briefs are set in the context of the Western Classical Tradition and
the response to the selected brief must result in a composition in a Western Classical style which
illustrates understanding of the musical language, techniques and conventions of the period (i.e.
Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras). You must choose a suitable style from these periods.
Further guidance on composing in a Western Classical style can be found in Appendix B of the
specification.
Composition evidence
You will be required to provide the following evidence when you submit your composition for
assessment:
1. a recording of the composition
2. a score or a detailed written description of the music accompanied by an outline of the melody
and chords used
3. a signed composition log outlining the development process and acknowledgements.
