The bar graph (Graph 1) shown above is a representation of the data collected from an
English listening lesson in a Year 5 classroom. The total numbers of the pupils were 25 and
their assessment on the lesson was thoroughly influenced through a listening test. The test
or language assessment was conducted during the while stage of the lesson where the
pupils were required to answer a worksheet that consists of 20 marks. The first part of the
test was merely to assess their listening skill using a recording while the second part of the
test was to evaluate the pupils ability to transfer oral information to a visual representation.
From Graph 1, we can see that the mode or the highest frequency of the test is 18
marks with 8 pupils. It also shows that the class is consist of pupils of mixed abilities where
there are a few who are weak and few more are advanced. Overall, we can see that most of
them are beyond average. The x-axis of the bar graph denotes the marks of the test while
the y-axis represents the frequency or number of pupils who got the particular marks. Hence,
when the graph are lined using a line graph, one expected shape would emerge and it would
be the bell curve as represented in Graph 2.
Technically, in statistics, the kinds of curves that are being intended and looked upon
are called as the normal distributions. After doing some calculations, the important
numbers/formula to get are the mean, variance, and the standard deviation. To be exact,
these numbers will determine the curve of your graph representation. In Graph 2, it is clearly
shown that the mean of the total marks is 15.88 or 16 if it is rounded to zero decimal places.
The standard deviation of the test result was 2.88 or 3 (after being rounded to zero decimal
places). The x-axis denotes the marks of the test and meanwhile, the y-axis indicates the
variance of the data.
Bell curve is undeniably significant as it is used to model a variety of data in the real
world. In this situation, to display the distribution of marks in a language test. This
symmetrical bell curve would match perfectly as a reflection on the mirror as both halves
would balance equally. Therefore, this bell curve shows a normal distribution of assessment
conducted to the pupils in the class.
