Dash to biomass: opportunity or threat?

A new report highlights that large-scale biomass plants, hailed as a key part
of the renewable energy revolution, could actually have a detrimental effect
on the environment and the economy, threatening jobs and increasing carbon
emissions.
The independent report, by John
Clegg Consulting, provides a picture
of wood fibre supply and demand in
Great Britain for the next 15 years.
The report’s foreword says: “If new
large users of British-grown wood and
other wood fibre enter the marketplace,
supported by subsidy, then it can
only be at the expense of existing
users, impacting negatively and
disproportionately on sustainability,
employment, carbon sequestration,
and mitigation of climate change.”
The report shows that demand for
wood could exceed supply as early as
next year (2011), before the impact of
most large-scale biomass plants is felt.
The report warns that even if a “small
proportion” of the new proposed wood
energy plants become operational, this
would put huge pressure on domestic
wood resources.
ConFor, the UK Forest Products
Association and the Wood Panel
Industries Federation, who jointly
commissioned the report, will use
its findings in their lobbying. Their
message will be that a dash to
biomass is not a suitable response
to meeting renewable energy targets.
The emphasis will be on maximising
the use of solid wood products
and securing future supplies from
sustainable sources.

GRIPPLE’S ENVIRONMENTAL WORK RECIEVES ROYAL RECOGNITION

Queen’s Award for Sustainable
Development was announced.

commitment to reducing its carbon
emissions by 10 per cent in 2010.
The day began with several staff
members being brought to work on
rickshaw bike, those that didn’t cycle,
walk, car-share or use public transport
to work were given an environmental
forfeit. Ten company departments
then delivered a sustainable initiative
they were asked to devise. The
company also launched a work wear
project in which old garments were
donated to overseas agricultural
colleges.
Gripple’s managing director, Mark
Edmonds, who announced the award
to assembled staff, said: “This award,
which is a unique achievement for
a company of our size, is highly
valued by us all. We are extremely
proud to have joined the select
group of companies which have
been so prestigiously recognised for
making worthwhile contributions to
sustainable development.”

Twelve shortlisted entries for the
regional RIBA Awards 2010 have
been announced by the Royal Society
in Wales (RSAW). The internationally
renowned RIBA Awards are given for
buildings that have achieved high
architectural standards and make a
substantial contribution to the local
environment. The awards are annual,
and have been running continuously
since 1966. The RSAW is delighted
that the Welsh entries for the RIBA
Awards were up by 91% this year
which highlights the amount of
high standard of architecture in
Wales. A spokesman for the RIBA
Awards shortlisting panel in Wales
said: “The shortlisted projects range
enormously in scale, character and
complexity however the common
theme is a rigour and confidence in
design quality to transform people’s
lives. The environmental standard of
entries was impressively high and it is
reassuring to see a majority of public
projects amongst the shortlist.”

FOREST MACHINE
OPERATOR COURSE
MAKES GOOD PROGRESS
The Forest Machine Operator Skills
Development Courses, which have
been pioneered by the UK Forest
Products Association (UKFPA) and
Barony College, are progressing
well. The second of three courses
in the 2009/2010 series has now
moved on to the practical phase,
with the trainees harvesting
timber on a site at Greskine, near
Beattock. The current course has
two trainees, Steven Grant from
Fortrose and Antony Pearson from
Eastbourne, who are working under
the leadership and instruction
of Paul Fotheringham and John
Williamson of Barony College.
The courses, which are of eight
weeks duration, include two weeks
college-based instruction, covering a
wide range of forestry, engineering,
environmental and health and
safety matters. The college period
also includes the use of harvesting
machine simulators.

as its gardens undergo major
landscaping.
When L&S heard of Naomi House’s
need for a waste removal service,
they were quick to come to the rescue
by offering a four cubic yard midi skip
worth £140 to help with the garden
waste. L&S are keen to engage with
local charities who may have a need
for their range of waste management
services which includes skip hire,
grab loaders, recycled aggregates,
soils, quality separated materials for
recycling, and ready mixed concrete.
Several local companies have
provided volunteers to help landscape
the gardens at Jacksplace, based in
Sutton Scotney, Winchester, which
provides care to young people with
life-limiting conditions and support
to their families. The volunteers have
been digging in top soil, laying turf
and planting shrubs to get the gardens
ready for the teenagers and young
people to enjoy the summer.

takes a
brief look
at The COSHH
Regulations
One area of health and safety that I find misunderstood is the
perception of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
Regulations 2002 (COSHH). In particular the concept of what
should (or shouldn’t) be included.
Most organisations recognise that
substances such as cleaning agents,
paints, varnishes and so on are
hazardous but forget that by-products
such as wood dust, vapours (welding
fumes) and even infectious agents
carried by animals are all covered by
the Regulations.
Clearly, some thinking ‘outside the
box’ may be required, but a simple
review of the workplace will (in most
cases) identify sources of hazardous
agents.
Compliance with COSHH Regulations
requires the following eight steps to
be followed:
STEP 1 - Carry out a risk assessment
to decide if the substances being
used, or to which employees are
incidentally exposed, are likely to
pose problems to health (either short
or long term). Consider by products
and substances produced by the
mixing of individual chemicals. The
quantities used and identification
of those who may be effected
(visitors, pregnant women etc) is also
essential.
STEP 2 – Decide on precautions
required to remove or reduce the
risks. Examine existing controls
and check that they are effective.
Consider storage, use and disposal
and if substances could be absorbed
through the skin. Do not forget that if
there are five or more employees, the
findings of the assessment will need
to be recorded.
STEP 3 – Prevent or control exposure.
This can be achieved by changes to

the activity or process to remove the
need for use of a substance or its
production. Alternatively, remove the
more hazardous product and replace
with a less hazardous product.
Find engineered solutions such
as minimising materials, changing
processes or using Local Exhaust
Ventilation (LEV). Only as a last
resort should Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) be considered and
then only if other controls cannot be
implemented.
STEP 4 – Ensure that control
measures are used and maintained.
Take all reasonable measures to
make sure that employees use the
control measures properly. This will
require suitable training, information
and supervision. It will also require
controls to be maintained, LEV’s to
be regularly inspected, PPE to be
examined and checked and systems
of work monitored.
STEP 5 – Monitor exposure. If the
risk assessment identifies that
exposure limits might be exceeded,
serious health risks could be caused
by failure of control measures or
control measures may not work
effectively then exposure monitoring
should be used. Schedule 5 of the
COSHH Regulations specifies the
requirements and any air monitoring
records must be recorded and the
record kept for at least five years.
Monitoring for an individual employee
must be kept with their health
records.
STEP 6 – Carry out appropriate
health surveillance. This could involve
examination by a doctor or trained
nurse and may check skin diseases
such as dermatitis or breathing
problems, for example. Schedule
6 of COSHH lists substances and
consideration should be given to
other substances known to be
linked to disease or health effect.
Any records produced from health
surveillance must be retained by the
employer for a minimum of 40 years,
yes 40 years!
STEP 7 – Plans and procedures
for accidents, incidents and
emergencies. If the work activity
produces risks well beyond normal
day-to-day activity and gives rise
to the hazardous substance being
involved in an accident, incident
or emergency then a plan must
be produced to deal with such an
eventuality. This will involve setting up
warning and communication systems
and ensuring that the information is
available for those who need to see
it. Additionally, safety drills must be
practised and recorded at regular
intervals.
STEP 8 – Ensure proper information,
training and supervision for all
employees. Provide details of the

warning label with a description such
as ‘irritant’ displayed. Even innocuous
substances such as water can be
dangerous. For example, ‘inhalation
of the substance in its liquid form
may cause death by removal of
oxygen’!

go until the UK’s largest forestry,
woodland and arboriculture
exhibition, APF 2010, on the
23- 25th September at Cannock
Chase, Staffordshire. Sponsored

16000 visitors will attend over the
three days. Exhibition Secretary,

facing. The APF Exhibition is the

industries come to compare and
buy machines and exhibitors know
it is the one show they cannot

event can be seen. Also for the first
time will be the Husqvarna World
25m Poleclimbing Championships
and the hugely popular European
Chainsaw Carving Championships

THE GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW
The Yorkshire Agricultural Society
is delighted that HRH The Princess
Royal is to visit the 2010 Great
Yorkshire Show. The Princess
will tour the famous farming and
countryside show on the first day of
the event which runs from Tuesday
13 – Thursday 15 July.
Bill Cowling, Honorary Show Director
said: “We are very much looking
forward to welcoming Princess Anne
in July. She is well known as a huge
supporter of rural life and her interest
and knowledge of all things equine is
renowned. I am sure she will have a
super time with us, and her visit will
give an extra reason to come to what
is England’s premier show.”
During her visit, The Princess will
meet visitors, staff and exhibitors
as she tours the showground on the
edge of Harrogate.
The Great Yorkshire Show is
organised by the Yorkshire
Agricultural Society, and HRH The
Prince of Wales is the Patron. The
show is no stranger to royal visitors.
Most recently, in 2008, Her Majesty
The Queen and HRH The Duke of
Edinburgh were guests of honour,
and two years earlier, The Prince
of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall
toured the show. The Princess last
visited the Show in 1992.

The Driffield Show, the UK’s largest

in place for the mammoth event
which takes place on Wednesday

a. The challenge is to erect approximately 45m of HT 8/80/15 net
with 2 lines of Barbed Wire on top. The judges want to see one
complete join, with 8 number Gripples (provided). The fence
includes a 45 degree bend approximately 10 m from one end.
Intermediate posts to be at a maximum of 3m centres
b. Competitors will erect one box strut (on the long run) and a
leaning strut on the short run
c. The line of the fence should follow the line of pre-set pegs.
d. Only the materials supplied by the organisers to be used.
e. Chainsaws/ Augurs allowed and these must be provided by the
competitors themselves. All competitors must be in possession
of relevant and current certificates to operate such powered
equipment and all appropriate safety equipment must be worn
whilst operating.
f. Copies of competency tickets to be provided to organisers in
advance. No ticket no entry!
g. End posts to be dug in and backfilled with the original soil.
h. Water can be used as circumstances demand
i. The Judge reserves the right to inspect any strut following
completion of the task.
j. The Judge’s decision will be final.

Tough times
ahead!
There’s no doubt about it – the
upsurge in fencing demand has
arrived with a bang and despite the
extremely changeable weather, this
demand seems to be sustained. This
is brilliant news for those companies
who had the foresight (and cash!) to
stock up when times were tough, but
for those who de-stocked (and that
includes a hell of a lot of supplying
mills) things are not at all as rosy!
Log prices are escalating at an
alarming rate as demand now
outstrips supply, and mills are
becoming selective both in what they
are prepared to cut and also who
they are prepared to sell to.
This situation certainly sorts the men
from the boys, and favours those who
have developed sound relationships
with their supply partners.
There still appears to be a raft of
suicide merchants out there who
are offering their wares at totally
unsustainable prices. A rising market,
believe it or not, is actually good for
our industry – as long as any cost
increases are ultimately passed all
the way up the chain.
Those weak sellers who are too
scared to ask for price increases
will soon find themselves acting as
busy fools, with only one inevitable
outcome.
Looking after ones traditional and
loyal customer base is also critical

in these times, as enquiries abound
from non loyal companies looking
for alarmingly large volumes – a sure
sign that their ‘traditional’ supply
base is letting them down!
We ourselves have a healthy forward
stock position in theory, but even we
are having to fight hard with some of
those mills which we have supported
through thick and thin to ensure
that they deliver on what has been
ordered.
Selectivity is also becoming more
commonplace – no longer is it quite
as easy to rustle up the strange
and unusual, with mills tending to
concentrate on limited standard
ranges.
Things are sure to get even more
challenging as we enter into a period
of relative political instability – with
pressures bound to be seen on
interest and foreign exchange rates
– all of which makes for interesting
times ahead!

Kent, to attend the opening of four
fantastic show gardens at Jacksons’ HQ
Chelsea’s all very nice, but once
you’ve added the crowds, the
expense and the logistical nightmare
of getting there, most would say
the event wasn’t quite the tranquil
experience for which they’d hoped.
But for those who want to see
spectacular gardens without the
chaos, down in the ‘Garden of
England’, Jacksons Fencing have
come up with an alternative.
On May 21st, TV gardener Joe Swift
unveiled four designer show gardens
at the company’s base in Kent.
Having launched a national design
challenge earlier in the year, four
winners were chosen from some of
the UK’s finest talent in garden design
and landscaping. The result was four
stunning gardens: ‘The Haven’; ‘The
Float Garden’; ‘The Centred Garden’
and ‘Jacksons goes to the Seaside’.
All the designs were created with
sustainability in mind, and do a
fantastic job of showing the versatility
and ‘wow factor’ of Jacksons many
products in situ. Despite the relatively
small scale of the operation, each
garden is intricate and unique in
style, featuring a range of fencing,
decking and trellis combined with
gorgeous garden furniture, features
and fountains, stone and paving, and
plants and flowers.
With materials coming from Jackson’s
fencing portfolio and support from
Brett, Coblands Nurseries, Chilstone
and best4plants – it just goes to show
that in even the tiniest of gardens,
anything is possible with the right

in the RHS show garden circuit, we
wanted to create our own mini-show
in a relaxed environment to allow
visitors plenty of time to get all the
details on the plants or products
involved in the garden.”
With around forty visitors at the VIP
launch and many more following at
the opening to the general public,
the gardens proved to be a huge
success. Jacksons hope to continue
instilling ideas into their customers
by running a series of designer days
during the summer months which
will give people the chance to get
some specialist advice on their own
projects from the experts. A unique
opportunity for anyone who fancies

Victoria Poolman visits Roy Barker at Kings Somborne in Hampshire
It’s been five years since the
Fencing & Landscaping News paid a
visit to Barker & Geary, so when we
heard that the company was making
its name as a specialist in the
installation of automated gates, we
thought it was time for an update.

Set up in 1945 by Roy’s father,

Harold, and partner William Geary,
a lot of changes have occurred over
the years, though Harold remains a
shareholder at the grand age of 94.

working for the family business, and
Roy now running the show with his
son Jonathan on side and daughter
Donna taking care of the accounts,
little has changed as far as the team
is concerned, with nine full-time staff
including Albert, who is approaching
his golden anniversary at the firm.

And while the company still trades

from its original site, and many
of the staff having been here for
decades, Barker & Geary’s offering
has changed dramatically and are
now recognised as specialists in the
design, manufacture and installation
of automated gates.
Indeed, their skill and level of expertise
has been recognised by CAME gate
automation, with Roy having been
whisked off to Venice and awarded a
rather lovely trophy for inscribed with
‘Best Installer in the South’. Having
fought off tough competition from
Roy Barker
London-based companies and big-
boys all over the region, it’s testimony
to the business’s accomplishments.
Roy tells me:
“As a fully-qualified electrician,
Jonathan has really added a new
dimension to our business. I
originally came from a background
in forestry and carpentry and turned
the business into more of a fencing
company, but while we still supply
fencing to trade and domestic clients
and do a little erection work, our gate
automation is the real focus now.”
The term ‘one stop shop’ is banded
around in our industry, but for one
company to provide the complete
service in this particular niche is a rare
thing indeed, and in doing so, Barker
& Geary take a traditional sense of
pride in what is fundamentally a very
modern service.
Roy tells me, “We take our clients
through the entire process, from
meeting them and designing gates to
spec, right through to manufacturing
the timber ones in our on-site machine
shop, assembling and installing
them, and finally taking care of the
electronics side of things such as the

intercom and computer system.”
With a number of prestigious
clients including the likes of Charlie
Dimmock and Gordon Ramsey,
secure, money-is-no-option jobs are
a regular request:
“We worked on a large project
recently for Lord Milford-Haven in
Rake, near Petersfield. He owns a
huge polo park with up to 400 horses
and 80 grooms at the height of the
season. He required numerous secure
entrances to his estate, including one
sliding automated gate with a width
of 12metres. He wanted the gate to
be in place at night, sliding through
the hedges and disappearing out of
sight in the day.
“It was an expensive job, requiring
a large amount of electronics to be
installed underground, but the end
result was superb.”
In addition, Barker & Geary have
supplied for projects at a number
of schools, local authorities, the
National Trust and for Marwell Zoo -
all jobs with a spec for reliable, quality
and extremely secure products.
But there’s more to what Roy and
his team are doing than installing a
few gates. With the involvement of
motors, remote controls and electric
cabling comes the inevitable pile
of Health & Safety paperwork. But

accidents involving children over
recent years, Roy feels extremely
strongly about doing his job properly.
“I absolutely believe that only qualified
people should be able to install these
products, because if negligence or
lack of experience creeps in, there
are huge hazards involved. Not only
do we attend all the correct training
courses, we also have a policy of
installing safety measures on each
gate and giving a full briefing to all
our customers.”
Indeed, with the wall in Roy’s
office covered with pictures of his
grandchildren, as a family man, he
puts safety first in all elements of his
work.
What a pleasure to visit a company
like this: a traditional ethos of doing
right by the customers and providing
a friendly, trusted service, whilst
advancing and evolving their offering
to push their business into the
future. And with five grandchildren,
it’s clear that there’ll be no worries
when it comes to the Barker name

Victoria Poolman travels to Chesham to meet Christine Dennis of G&MB Manning Fencing Ltd
It’s not often that I meet woman
whose bread and butter is in
fencing panels and trellis; it’s even
less common to meet someone who
not only earns a living supplying
timber, but is whole-heartedly
passionate about doing so. But in
Christine Dennis, I’ve managed to
find both.

As managing director of G. & M.B.

Manning Fencing, Chris has been in
the industry for 28 years, although
the family business began way back
in 1960 when it was set up by her
parents, Marian and Geoff. With
Geoff running his own engineering
export company, Marian started
raising her own poultry, which soon
evolved into the supply of equipment
to those who kept chickens and then
general fencing supplies. Whilst
this was going on, Chris was busy
training as an environmental health
officer before deciding to go into Chris Dennis
fencing in 1982, expanding her
mother’s existing business.

It’s clear that the Manning customer
base is solid, though Chris has had
to make gestures in the past to show
where her loyalties lie:
“One of the bravest moves I’ve made

get in but also makes the statement
to our trade clientele that we value
them and put their needs first. After
all, we are primarily a service for
contractors. The move paid off - as
soon as we did that, our turnover
went up 20%.”
Indeed, Manning Fencing sold a
whopping 3500 different items last
year, reflecting the diversity of their

offerings: including 8.5 miles of
fencing panels, 15.5 miles of post
and rail and 4000 railway sleepers.
The company is certainly well
prepared for orders of any size, with
a stock of 500 gates, and deliveries
of 200 tons to the yard each week.
“The beauty of catering for the
needs of contractors in so many
industries is that we can react
quickly to the market. For example,
in the recession, what was lost on
construction side was made up for
on agricultural side. We put this
down to being a one stop shop,
providing everything required for
complete jobs, having the stock
ready for when our customers need
it and giving advice on all aspects of
the job”, says Chris.
Indeed, with many of Manning
Fencing’s 12 employees having
worked at the company for twenty
years, they are a very experienced
team, and Chris recognises the vital
role they play in the success of her
business:
“I couldn’t do without my staff, they
make the working environment a
very happy one and I’m delighted
that they’ve all been here so long
- two of our ladies even left and
came back again. My manager Jon
Saggerson is fantastic, he came in
for a quote 12 years ago and left
with a job – though he still jokes that
he never did get his quote.”
Given the friendly nature of the
business, which I can vouch for
having had staff offer their services
before I’d even set foot in the door,
the team is always happy to give
advice and help those new to the
industry:
“Sometimes when people are
starting out, they need a bit of
help, and we’ve given them ideas
and suggestions as to the kind of
materials they need. As a result,
we’ve had customers come back
and express their gratitude, we’ve
seen young businesses grow and
develop – we’ve even had parents
come in and thank us. It’s a lovely
feeling and it makes work enjoyable
– the fact that it’s not all about how
much profit we make.”
However, their values aren’t doing
any damage to the books, with
their involvement in the prestigious
Chelsea Flower Show helping Save
the Children win a gold award for
their garden back in the 90’s. And
although it’s not quite so glamorous,
as an example of how trusted
Chris is within the industry, she
was recently asked to provide forty
telephone aerial sites to be exported
to Luxemburg: “Alarmingly there
was no specification available and
I ended up suggesting a spec. and
calculated all the material quantities
on the entire job. It was a very
lucrative contract and I was over the
moon when we won it! Even better
– it was entirely smooth-sailing from
start to finish, and everyone was
pleased with the result.”
Moving ahead, Chris is currently
in the process of submitting for
FSC accreditation, as well as the
rebuild of a new website: “I just

Tanalised pressure
treated timber used to
recreate Roman Fort
For centuries a Roman settlement
has stood on the shores of the Rhine
at Xanten, Germany, originally built
to guard the Northern border of the
Roman empire.
Now a reconstruction of the
original Roman fort, manufactured
from Tanalised pressure treated
timber, has created a magnificent
playground village and provides
a prime example of a high quality
treated wood construction that will
really stand the test of time.
The open air museum “Archeological
Parc Xanten” represents the original
Roman village and over 100 m3 of
preservative treated pine timbers
have been used in its construction.
The project was first started in
2005 but then closed in 2007 after
parts of the structure collapsed due
to decay.
On investigation, the original
timbers had been poorly treated but
the Park owners were determined
to try again, this time with improved
design considerations and very best
preservative protection available. A
comparative test was made with all
major wood preservatives on the
German market, looking for good
uptakes, penetration and overall
quality. Tanalith E was chosen as
the best alternative.
The whole preservative treatment
process for the new timbers was
supervised by an independent
expert and new design features
were introduced. Pole tops have
been capped with plastic caps,
horizontal roundwood components
have been incised on the underside
to reduce any splitting of the wood
and joints in the roof construction
are protected with a roof-fleece to
help prevent moisture ingress.

creating a safe, durable and

Chris Berry talks with Lincolnshire fencing man Willie Baumber
Willie Baumber has always stuck
to what he’s good at in the fencing
game.

‘There are now so many people at it,

but we don’t touch the commercial
or domestic side. Most of my
work is agricultural or to do with
conservation. We do mainly barbed
wire stock fencing, a bit of post and
rail, poultry and horse fencing.’

Coming from a farming background

Willie always wanted to farm and
worked on farms in Lincolnshire in
his spare time whilst growing up,
either tractor driving, fencing or tree
felling. ‘If I won the lottery the first
thing I would buy would be a farm,’
he says.

Willie started out in his own

business in 1982 having initially
worked as a motor engineer with a
local garage. He lives near Spilsby
in rural Lincolnshire. ‘It was just
me with a Nuffield tractor, Parmiter
post knocker and a scruffy old Land
Rover with no tax disc. That’s all I
had when I started. I’ve quite a bit
of kit now.’
One of Willie’s most interesting
‘bits of kit’ is the machine he put
together himself which is shown in
the picture here. It is a Protech Post
Knocker on a tracked dumper that
Willie designed and built.
‘I made this from the remnants of
a Kubota dumper and lots of stuff
from the scrapyard. I drew up the
idea on the back of a fag-packet.
It’s one of the best things I’ve ever
built. Protech made me the knocker
very reasonably on the condition

They’ve now progressed from that
and are selling more of them.’
Willie uses the Protech knocker for
certain jobs and his absolute pride
and joy, his Bryce post knocker for
the bigger ones.
‘When you get something like this
BRYCE knocker you just can’t
beat it. It’s the best thing I’ve ever
bought. It’s also a good match
for the Protech. If you have 2000
metres of fencing to put up then you
use the BRYCE, if it’s 200 you take
the Protech.’
When Willie first started in business
his contracting side encompassed
diggers and bulldozing work and he
still has a couple of diggers as back-
up today. His business is changing
though. He no longer employs any
staff. Jason Brown, now a local
contractor who works with Willie on
jobs, used to be employed by Willie
for 4 years. Willie is keen to see him
get on.
‘I had a bit of a slack period last
year and so Jason has now set up
on his own. We’re working together
and I’m helping him get more jobs.
I get a lot of enquiries from private
individuals and Jason is taking those
on himself.’
Willie gets concerned about the
quality of materials that fence post

today and has strong feelings about

his customers.

Storming ahead in Seaford

Chris Berry talks with Roger & Ann Jesty
Along came a hurricane. It could
easily be the title of a book couldn’t
it, but instead it’s just a matter
of fact statement from ex-marine
Roger Jesty who, together with his
wife Ann has built up an intriguing
and varied business which goes
under the sometimes confusing
name of Wynne’s/Seaford Fencing
in Seaford on the south coast. More
of the name later.

‘After I came out of the marines I

was a full-time docker in Newhaven.
We used to have a lot of down-
time and it was usually a case of
either going down to a local pub or
starting off another business to fill
the time,’ says Roger. ‘So I started
off doing a bit of grass cutting and
garden maintenance, which then led
on to fencing. Then along came the
hurricane in 1987 and suddenly I
stopped being a docker and became
a full-time fencer. The company just

Seaford Fencing – along with
Wynne’s – now employs around
26 staff and covers a broad base
of a fencing business, garden store
and ironmongers. They employ a
gatemaker – James Stubbs, pictured
here. Roger’s brother is one of his
fencers and has worked with him for
25 years. In fact most of those who
work for Roger and Ann have been
with them for a long time.
‘Seaford Fencing is the original
company that we started out with,’
says Roger. ‘We took over Wynne’s
– the ironmongers based in the town
around 20 years ago. It has been a
business in its own right since 1930
and is still the kind of shop where you
can go in and buy just one screw. It
still has all its original fittings and
when we took it over all the locals
told us never to change it.’
Wynne’s was also the name of the
garden centre which Roger and Ann
ran as part of their operation half
way between the ironmongers and
their main base today. However, the
site ended up not being big enough to
accommodate both the fencing yard
and garden centre.

BSW Timber has unveiled progressive plans for a multi-
million pound investment at the Howie Forest Products
site at Dalbeattie, following a successful acquisition of
the company in November 2009.
The Dalbeattie mill is one of the largest
single-location sawmills in UK and
plans to invest over £7 million into the
site in a drive to increase productivity
from 230,000 m³ sawn timber to
more than 350,000m³.

BRIDGES
Dry stone wallers have been out in
force as part of an ambitious plan
to replace a ‘clapper’ bridge in the
Ballowfields Nature Reserve in the
Yorkshire Dales National Park.
The bridge, which is still subject
to planning permission, was put
together at The Dales festival of Food
and Drink to demonstrating dry stone
walling techniques. It is then hoped
that it will be rebuilt in the National
Park at the Ballowfields Nature
Reserve between Carperby and
Askrigg. The existing bridge, which
is similar to stepping-stones, floods
when the water levels rise.
The new bridge was assembled as
part of a master class run by Dry
Stonewall Master Craftsman Norman
Haddow from Scotland. The class

John Heslegrave of the local branch

approximately £2000 to
build, is being paid for by the

for everyone?

year for UK sawmills, especially
those supplying the fencing market.
This year is already proving to be no
exception.
The fencing season has got off to a
good start and producers of British
grown timber are reporting very strong
demand, which is especially welcome
after the relatively poor start to last
year. Indeed, producers of other UK
sawn softwood products, including
construction timber and pallet and
packaging timber, also report very
strong demand. However, there is
a down-side; increased demand is
causing tensions in the UK wood
supply chain, as roundwood prices are
rising sharply and supply issues are
arising in some parts of the Country.
The strong demand for UK sawn
softwood products is not, unfortunately,

WPA lobbies for continued
use of creosote
The Wood Protection Association
(WPA) is lobbying to prevent a
European Directive having an
adverse impact on the use of
creosote treated wood. Changes
relating to creosote usage made
recently to the Biocidal Products
Directive (BPD) would take end
use approval responsibility away
from the competent authorities
in individual member states.
According to WPA Director, Steve
Young: ”The ramifications of this
move would effectively ban creosote
as a wood preservative for Use Class
4 applications.” Use Class 4 is the
British and European Standard
classification for wood in permanent
ground contact.
Core markets for industrially
treated creosote include electricity
and telecoms transmission poles,
fencing including the specialist, but
economically important UK horse

is the only wood preservative listed in

Commission, were released in

The key points from the latest
release follow.
Harvesting of UK roundwood in
2009 comprised:
• 8.8 million green tonnes of
softwood, representing a 4 per
cent increase on 2008; and
• 0.5 million green tonnes
of hardwood, a 24 per
cent increase on 2008.
UK roundwood deliveries to
industries and others in 2009
totalled 8.6 million tonnes
of roundwood (softwood and
hardwood), representing no
change from 2008.
• Sawmills took 5.2 million
green tonnes, a 4 per
cent increase on 2008.
• Wood-based panel
manufacturers took 1.0
million green tonnes, a 17 per
cent decrease from 2008.
• Integrated pulp and paper
mills took 0.5 million
green tonnes, a 1 per cent
decrease from 2008.
• Other uses, including round
fencing, woodfuel, shavings
and exports of roundwood .

2009 out of a total of £1.5 billion
for all wood product exports.
Timber Price Indices are based on
Forestry Commission sales, and
consist of the Coniferous Standing
Sales Price Index and the Sawlog
Price Index. They present data to
March 2010 for Great Britain.
The key points from the latest
release are:

standing sales was £9.62
per cubic metre overbark

ConFor welcomes commitment to

productive forestry
“It is great to see, after so much work
by ConFor in recent years, that the
UK government now recognises the
importance of productive forestry”,
said ConFor chief executive Stuart
Goodall.
The commitment is contained in the
UK Government’s announcement of
a new policy on converting woodland
to open habitats published earlier
this year.
The policy document states: “Non-
native plantations (mainly conifer)
have a crucial role to play in moving
towards a low-carbon economy
because they generally grow faster
than native woodland and generate
higher volumes of potential woodfuel
and useable timber. Confidence in the
supply of domestically grown timber is
important, and productive woodland,
including conifers, will play a positive
role in the government’s transition
plan to a low-carbon economy.”
Under extreme pressure from RSPB
and Natural England, government
had consulted on a policy of removing
up to 3,000 hectares of primarily
productive forest per year, at a
projected cost to the public purse of
£61million. These new losses would
have added to continuing losses
from development and other public
policies such as restoration of PAWS
(plantations on ancient woodland
sites).
“Conifers in particular were targeted,
because of a belief that they lacked
value: lacked value to local people
and lacked value for biodiversity.
ConFor has consistently challenged
these out-dated perceptions, while
stressing the benefits of conifers
for a low-carbon economy, their
importance to wood-using business,
and their vital role in supporting
the cost of sustainable forestry
management,” continued Stuart.

admits that it’s the commitment of
the experienced staff that has kept
the company so grounded over the
past 40 years: “Up until very recently
we didn’t employ one individual

a good chance our MD Simon will
answer the phone, we are incredibly
hands on. There’re so many large
companies where the owners aren’t
involved in the business and the
directors sit in their ivory towers,
so far removed from what’s going

customers and clients. Customers
can speak to us and know that
they’ll get a decision. We eat sleep
and breathe the business.”
With a multi million pound turnover
and as one of the countries largest
manufacturers of drive-on crop
storage systems, Severn Valley
and its team are always looking at
opportunities, two years ago the
company decided that the need to
increase production capacity was
vital. They decided that they needed
an additional site and a high speed,
fully automated moulding line to
profile timber. Within two months
they had found the site, installed the
new equipment and were operating.
Aside from the new Lydney site all
of Severn Valley and its counterpart
brands’ work is done at their
Westbury-on-Severn site, which is
where you’ll find three huge pressure
treatment tanks, one of which is one
of the oldest in the UK (see photo).
The company has a capacity to
pressure treat 200 m3 of wood per
day. The three tanks rely on Arch’s
Tanalith E treatment, to produce the
very best products.
David concludes: “The six of us
each have a fantastic sense of
achievement; we don’t just have
physical ownership of this company,
but emotional ownership too.”

UK Fencing
industry
342 companies in the UK Fencing
industry have lost over a third of
their value in a year according to
new research by analysts Plimsoll. In
fact, out of the top 763 companies
analysed and valued in a special
edition of the Plimsoll Analysis –
Fencing, 528 companies are worth
less than they were last year.
David Pattison, senior analyst at
Plimsoll, explains the impact the
last couple of years have had on the
value of companies in the UK market,
“It’s not surprising that the value of
companies have taken a pounding
recently but the extent of the squeeze
is striking. Only 235 companies
managed to increase their value – a
record low.”
Pattison suggests there are some
more fundamental reasons for the big
dip in the value of certain companies,
“A number of factors have affected
values. As demand slackened and
companies were inclined to protect
their market share, many saw
profitability fall as a result. The 342
companies that have suffered 30%
and more falls in their value have all
seen their profit margins plunge too.
So is there any hope for company
owners tired of the bad news
and market pressures? Pattison
suggests there is, “Despite it all, 235
companies are now worth more than
they were last year. Considering the
malaise in the market over recent
years that is a quite remarkable
achievement. I hope it points to
better times ahead.”
This new report has been in the
pipeline for 2 years but, as Pattison
explains the timing has not been

Herriard Sawmills Ltd:
Southern England’s Largest Independent Specialist Sawmill Group
There is an abundance of fencing
companies who claim to be a ‘one
stop shop’, but it’s unusual to come
across a business which really does
encompass the lot: from bespoke
oak frames to Estonian houses built
specifically for barbeques, with a
whole lot of fencing, sheds, gates
and sawn logs in between.
Co-owner Mike Self tells me, “We do
everything - we advise, deliver, erect
and make bespoke products using our
team of twenty staff spread across
our three sites, and subcontracting
where required.”
Mike started working in forestry in
the Solomon Islands in the Pacific,
but it was upon coming back and
meeting partner Roger Austin whilst
working at Tilhill Forestry that the
pair began thinking about going it
alone, finally taking up the reigns of
Herriard Sawmills near Basingstoke
in 1988. Since then, the business
has blossomed, with three sites now
under the Herriard name, including
Valley Sawmills near Frome in
Somerset, and Hillbarn Sawmill up in
Worcestershire.
The initial site at Herriard was built
up from a small estate sawmill,
and now, under the leadership of
Manager Nick Lucas, provides a
range of bespoke products, pressure
treatment of timber using Arch’s
Tanalith E preservative, and a gate-
making facility – as well selling a
large amount of fencing.
Much has changed over the years,
with the amount of in-house
manufacturing dramatically reduced
and a working sawmill now only
used on two of the sites, with most
of the stock being bought in bulk and
sold on. The exception is Hillbarn

Sawmill, which specialises in the
production of green oak products
including housing frames - many of
which are specifically designed for
individual clients.
Mike tells me, “Having the three
sites has completely changed the
business, with each location fulfilling
a different role within the company.
We can now service customers
throughout the South of England,
with vehicles going between sites on
a regular basis. We service mainly
fencing contractors, landscapers
and builders here, though we’d like
to attract more retail trade as we are
tucked away and not many people
know we’re here.”
With plans to extend the showroom
from its current 100 x 50ft, the
site looks very impressive, although
it is the smallest of the three, with
Herriard at two acres and HillBarn
at four.

The last time fencing news visited
Laversdale Timber in Carlisle, the
term ‘recession’ was practically
unheard of; trade was thriving and
a number of exciting changes had
been made. The company’s Director
Garry Robinson had just extended
the site’s acreage and was on
the verge of increasing stock and
extending product ranges.
Fast-forward four years and Garry’s
refreshing optimism remains. Not
only have staff levels increased
within the company, but one of the
damaged, unused treatment tanks
has been restored back to its former
glory.
Garry tells us: “We’ve employed
three new members of staff in total,
which is promising and we had the
old treatment vessel repaired. It’s
now a fully automated machine
and has reduced the amount of
man power needed to operate it.
It’s generally made things run much
more efficiently and has upped the
capacity of materials we can treat by
almost 25%.”
It’s hard to ignore the damage made
within the fencing and landscaping
industries over the last few years, so
how exactly has Garry and his team
kept afloat? “I dread to think what
it will be like when we get hit really
hard, because to be honest, we’ve
never been so busy. The only time
we felt a slight effect was towards the
back end of 2008 when customers
just weren’t coming through the door,
but when January arrived it picked
up again thankfully.”
Despite surviving the recession,
Garry admits there was one negative

“Unfortunately, we haven’t been able
to cater for newer customers, simply
because we can only do the best

Victoria Poolman catches up with Kevin Mead at the 3rd Post Puncher open day
As the designers and manufacturers
of the fantastic PostPuncher,
Kevin Meade and his team at Jay
Engineering took to the hills last
month to hold their 3rd annual open
day at Berwick St John, in the heart
of the beautiful Dorset countryside.

With the support of a number of big

names, there was a fantastic display
of machinery to view, including an
array of Kubota tractors and Takunchi
excavators, a variety of PostPunchers,
and local fencing team Trevor Coffen
Contractors who erected a display for
visitors.
Other exhibitors on the day included
CBL, EG Coles, Avant Techno and
Jacksons Fine Fencing, who recently
started up their own tool-hire
company.
During set-up, Kevin told me, “Off the
back of last year’s open day, where
we sold 20 machines, this kind of
event is well-worth doing. It costs
much less than the big shows and
gets the whole team together to show
off our products.”
Indeed, the latest and greatest thing
from PostPuncher is a smaller design,
which, displayed sitting happily
on the back of a Kubota machine,
is perfect for smallholders, and
affordably priced at just £1200. Other
developments include the Fastfencer
which acts as a time-saving kind of
cling-film dispenser for rolls of wire,
and a Wire Winder which winds up
old barbed wire and stock fencing
hydraulically, saving both time and
labour costs for contractors.

DOOSAN BABCOCK WINS RoSPA’S SIR GEORGE EARLE TROPHY

Engineering construction firm Doosan
Babcock has been announced as the
winner of RoSPA’s most prestigious
occupational health and safety
award.
The company was presented with
the safety charity’s Sir George Earle
Trophy at a ceremony in Birmingham
this week. Doosan Babcock, a part
of Doosan Power Systems, designs,
supplies and constructs advanced
steam generation technology for the
power industry. The judging panel
was particularly impressed by the
strategic approach to health and safety
adopted by its board members and
senior managers and by managers’
commitment to provide visible and
felt leadership at all levels, including
through workplace tours and visits.
Other strong features of the firm’s
approach to accident and ill health
prevention include: workforce
consultation and involvement; the
development of a culture in which
employees are encouraged to
challenge their own health and safety

2010 BUPA Great Manchester Run

ever in the BUPA Great Manchester
Run, the UK’s largest 10k run. The
team of around 40 staff, family and
friends included fifteen first timers,
others competing for the third
successive time, brothers and sisters,
and marital partners. After raising
more than £6,000 for charity over
the previous two events, this year

causes, Breakthrough Breast Cancer
and the Prostate Cancer Charity,
competing in specially printed tops

charity symbols. The oldest team
members were 61 year old Martyn
Binnington (1:05:22) and 59 year
old Maggie McDermott (1:20:29),
while Sarah Newton got even nearer
the hour mark, just three years after
breaking her back.

because our rep Steve Rawson’s wife,
Babs, had breast cancer recently and
thankfully now has the all clear,”
says HMG’s marketing manager and
three-time competitor, Paddy Dyson.
“We also employ quite a number
of men, so there was also plenty of

When W H (Billy) Paterson was
confronted with the sight of his
timber yard resembling a boating
lake on 19 November last year
there was little he could do initially
but wait for the water to go down.
After 36 hours of continuous rain
the nearby river had burst its
banks with devastating effect for
Cockermouth and Workington,
and the Paterson timber yard at
nearby Brigham incorporating
the businesses of brothers Billy
and Jim Paterson was flooded up
to a depth of several feet. In fact
the loss adjuster for the insurance
company had to arrive by boat!
