A High-Voltage SiC-Based Boost PFC for

LED Applications
Introduction:
Converters operating with high voltage gains are widely used in
many industrial applications, some examples being high-intensity
discharge lamps (HIDs) requiring several kilovolt at their start-up,
front edge stage circuits for renewable energy, cold cathode
fluorescent lamps, and telecommunication applications. Nowadays, in
addition to electricity generation by means of renewable energies, an
important way to contribute to CO2 reduction is an efficient
transformation of electricity in other types of energy. This is the case
of using efficient lighting sources, as light-emitting diodes (LEDs),
HIDs or induction electrode less fluorescent lamps (IEFLs), which are
increasingly employed in domestic or industrial applications. The
main drawback of these lamps, however, is the high voltage power
supply they require.

Existing system:
A modification of the basic bridgeless PFC boost rectifier by
means of the addition of two slow recovery diodes (DA, DB) and a
second inductor (L2), this resulting in two dc dc boost circuits, one
for each half-line cycle. This topology, known as semi bridgeless
boost rectifier or dual boost rectifier, is a more suitable solution for
practical implementation than the basic bridgeless topology in terms
of sensing the input voltage and current variables. Basically, the semibridgeless rectifier is configured by two different boost converters,

with an extra diode for each boost, that operate during each half-line
cycle. Therefore, the two active switches can be controlled
independently by the same control signal or other gating techniques.
It has been seen that a synchronous rectification only contributes to
decrease power losses in low power cases but this improvement is lost
when the on-state resistance increments as a consequence of
temperature rise-up of the MOSFET.

Drawbacks:
Significant ripple increment in the leds current
LED-light flickering problems

Proposed system:
To implement a single-stage SiC based PFC boost converter
operating as a current source with a negligible output ripple without

losing PFC capability. An additional objective is applying the

previous implementation in the supply of a high-voltage LED spot
using SiC power devices. The converter control is based on the
sliding-mode control theory applied to the input current, and is
implemented with a hysteretic comparator. The converter is studied in
normal and burst operations modes. The output of the converter is
loaded with an LED spot with 320 LED devices connected in series.
The risk of failing provoked by an element in open circuit is mitigated
by connecting a Zener bypass diode for each four LEDs. The spot
luminosity is regulated changing the Iref value.

Advantages:
Output current at a constant level with no ripple,
No flickering
Acoustic resonances, or simply to improve the energy transfer
efficiency
Higher efficiencies
Greater switching frequencies
Superior power densities
